Find out what Matt and Zach think in Epic Footnote Productions’ “2 Minutes to Review,” a podcast that’s part album review and part competition. My initial reaction to this album was lukewarm. I felt it was a good album, but a bit tired and half-baked. Nowhere near to great. However, with subsequent listens it has grown considerably.
In a general sense, six of the 11 tracks are hard rock tunes, while the remaining five are Tom Petty-esque americana/heartland rock. The americana stuff reminds me of some of Vedder’s solo work. Wreckage and Won’t Tell are really good and enjoyable. Something Special, Got to Give, and Setting Sun are good but a tier below.
Scared of Fear is awesome and a really good opener. I feel it has a good arrangement and good lyrics. Dark Matter also has decent lyrics, but the arrangement is more conventional and safe. Still really good, though. Upper Hand is the best song of the album, and features a great solo. The lyrics are also really great. I feel they may reflect the stage of the band and old age. Waiting for Stevie is similar in its attempt to ‘go for it.’ The lyrics, though, are a bit predictable and average. Nonetheless, the playing is good and the solo awesome.
The other heavier songs are really good musically, but the lyrics are just okay. I don’t feel they were labored over that much. Still, the music of React, Respond is great. Running is similarly awesome with its punky hard rock style. Forgettable lyrics, though. But again, it’s a really short track.
Overall, I really dig this album. It sounds better with headphones than on the car stereo, though. The mix is loud as fuck and can be fatiguing. On headphones you can at least notice what each guitar is doing on their respective channels. That shit gets lost on a car stereo. I’m guessing the dynamics numbers are pretty bad on this release.
The comment about this being a better album experience really rings true. This is not a classic, or a capital letter “Great” album, however, it may be a really good or even lower case “great” one.

Gents, couldn’t agree more with your assessments. Holy hyping! Pearl Jam already has too many band members. It does not need Andrew Watt. And going forward, with his track record of meh, when I hear he’s producing a new album, I know what to expect. Please don’t touch QOTSA, NIN, Deftones, etc.
