    This was a real eye-opener! I immediately ordered STERAMINE from Amazon. During Thanksgiving there were 3 cooks in my kitchen (complete chaos) but I knew all work surfaces were sanitized before and after .I'm so glad you introduced us to Steramine.

    Thank you, Dr. Pam, so much for this informative video! We need to heed her words about OVER sanitizing! It’s so easy to think, “if some is good, more must be better”. Chlorine is a carcinogen. When you are smelling it, it is going into your body. Don’t get it on your skin. Also, when you pour it down your drain, or flush it, you can damage the balance of organisms in your septic system. Another note: 30 years ago, parents were told to keep houses pristine and allergen free, if their kids had allergies. They have since learned that the healthiest children with the least allergies were living on farms with dirt and animals! Let’s use these things carefully and moderately.

    I learned about the proper ratio of bleach the hard way. Some people think that if you use it full strength that it is more effective. You absolutely according to OSHA need to follow the dilution instructions on the bottle. I had raw sewage come up three times at an old apartment complex I lived at and learned about bleach then. They had allot of trees and roots got into the plumbing system. I am a personal assistant and am constantly cleaning and disinfecting. So READ THE INSTRUCTIONS. Also wear gloves and if you are allergic to chemicals wear a mask. Also open windows for ventilation. KEEP ALL CHEMICALS OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. THAT INCLUDES THE SPRAY BOTTLES THAT YOU MIGHT USE ON A DAILY BASIS. Such a wonderful and complete video. Thank you so much for all that you do for our community. Redheads rule the universe!!! Thank you for posting this totally valuable video!!! I really enjoy your comments in this segment about buying chemicals in concentration & just making it at home yourself, as opposed to constantly buying small one time use bottles. Times are tough all around, but this method helps reduce plastic consumptions as well!
    The economy is AMAZING when you buy a LARGE quantity of Lysol on sale and then rationing it out into your multi-use bottle.
    I like to use an elixir of one part 6% distilled white vinegar, one part H2O, and one tablespoon of dish liquid (free n clear preferably) and mix that up in my 1Q spray bottle for surface cleaning.
    Hydrogen peroxide works well as a cleaner / sanitizer / deodorizer HOWEVER you have to ensure you use HP inside the brown bottle; because if sunlight gets into HP then the solution is ruined. So, I attach the spray trigger right into the bottle to replace the lid and use it that way.
    For sanitizing I like to use 70% alcohol or higher (isopropyl) or for deodorizing I will use a product called Odoban.
    For disinfecting I have used Lysol for years, or a ZEP product antibacterial lemon disinfectant. I also used to buy Clorox wipes, but now I will make my own out of blue shop towels or Viva paper towels and a disinfectant elixir.
    A large jug of Lysol lasts a long time when portioned correctly even at full strength. I also used to use a product called Cavicide.
    I cannot use Clorox bleach at home at all due to my mom’s hypersensitivity to the gas odor that is emitted. Even through the ceiling she can smell it.
    Someone once told me sanitizing kills bacteria but disinfecting can kill viruses which is a good rule of thumb that I follow.
    I learned how Clorox has a short shelf life. I also have told everyone in my path how Clorox should be used in combination with COLD/cool water for maximum effectiveness.
    I appreciate very much how in depth you delve into the topic at hand. You are nothing short of an amazing RUclips educator! I do intend to replace my chemical regime with Steramine as my supplies run low!

    Suggestion: For chlorine, look for gallons of the 10% pool version at Lowe's ("Pool Essentials brand) -- about $4/gal in our area. Same chemical. I needed some for pressure washing algae on our house, and had found the grocery store versions no longer label the concentration on the bottle (!) and some are only 3%, some still 6% or 8% (but that's rare). Pretty sure when I grew up, the grocery store Chlorine had 6%. Some you can't even tell it has chlorine in it, and I found it had stopped cleaning. At first, I thought someone had returned a bottle filled out with just water! Your money will go further with 10%, less storage space, and it's actually effective. Just dilute it appropriately.
    Ordering my Steramine today! 2.5 yrs since the video and I see 6 bottles for $41; not too bad! Will share. I can stop hoarding my hospital wipes with quartenary ammonia! Win! :)
    (People DO know that ammonia gas and chlorine gas make a deadly combination, don't they? I was an adult before I learned that, and I am old, lol. Anyway, I make a habit in our household to clean with only one of them on any day, alternate days. Just to be safe.)
    Tip: Some of the grocery store spray bottles are poor quality nowadays, and the ones found at big box stores like Home Depot are expensive. Harbor Freight has a set of two well-regarded spray bottles for about $5. (Fall 2021) Note I found they are surprisingly taller than spray bottles from Walmart or dollar stores; consider storage location when buying them. They do look more like the ones in your video here.
    Excellent video - I am loving your channel, thank you so much for all the info, presented in such an easily absorbed fashion!

    I approach this from a different mindset developed from working many years in the microbiology section of a medical testing lab. We railed against doctors overprescibing antibiotics, thus risking developing disease resistant strains of pathogens.
    I believe excessive disinfecting/sterilizing of surfaces to kill 'germs' leads to the same outcomes. One's first line of defense should be mechanical (like soap and water) over harsher chemical means. Hand sanitizers/wipes are developing a bad reputation in the scientific community and I am surprised that the EPA is not more cognizant of this. Maybe dissemination of this information is more a function of the CDC.

      In the food world, we sanitize, we don't disinfect. Regulations that determine food safety are set at the state level with minimum adoption of FDA Food Code. Most food outlets can only use quat or bleach sanitization. We also must test our solutions and dump them every 4 hours. If you follow food code, you pretty much guarantee elimination of foodborne illness.

    • @yana1955
      @yana1955 2 года назад

      @@namehere4954 I'm not talking about commercial use. My lab handled all sorts of deadly and potentially deadly pathogens. All surfaces had to be thoroughly cleaned and often lest a pathogen get released out the doors. My beef is with consumers who excessively cleanse surfaces and themselves to get rid of 'germs'. They are encouraging selective pressures to create mutations for which we may have no effective antibiotics.

    • @namehere4954
      @namehere4954 2 года назад +1

      @@yana1955 my expertise is food safety as I've sat on a food code board at the state level so my opinion is applicable to residential & commercial food preparation. People should seek guidance from their local county health departments with regards to food safety as the environment you're describing & pathogens suggested are not remotely the same. A well run food outlet is at minimum sanitizing every 4 hours and there is nothing adverse about that frequency.

    When I opened the bottle of Stireene I immediately began coughing and I couldn’t breathe
    Deciding to read the contents I was convinced to send it back
    These ingredients were so violent I didn’t want it in my home
    I noticed when you opened this bottle YOU began to cough too

    Chlorine yellows white vinyl flooring and my white Corian countertops and sink. Alternatives are Hydrogen Peroxide or Denatured Alcohol to sanitize & disinfect. Have you tried these on your marble counters? What are your thoughts?

    Hi Pam, I have a question. I have heard not to use bleach all the time to sterilize water that it can actually become toxic from continuous use, have you heard anything about this? Thank you so much for your channel. I have learned so much from you and trust you!

    • @RoseRedHomestead
      @RoseRedHomestead  2 года назад +2

      I have not heard that and it seems to me if you follow the recipe recommended by Clorox, that it would not amount to more than what chlorinated tap water would be. Check out our Water 2 video on sanitizing water: ruclips.net/video/tGjZEIAWdpQ/видео.html

    Thanks for the great explanation! I remember in college using water, alcohol, then water, and acetone (I may have my order mixed up) to clean down the work top after lab. Is that as effective as the bleach or steramine situation? I find the fumes situation way less hateful than bleach. That stuff is so eye watering, even at dilution, because my local tap water is pretty heavily chlorinated.

      My go to is steramine these days, which has no odor and is very powerful. That college lab protocol is not good for home use!

    Pam, Thank you for all of your helpful videos. Do you wear gloves when using Steramine? I do when dealing with Chlorox. Because Steramine is used as a 3rd rinse, I'm hoping it is not a bad for your skin as Chlorine. Thank you for telling the public about this product.

    So . . . I have a friend that sprays and wipes out all her milking equipment after washing with a hydrogen peroxide solution including the soon to be used glass jars - would this be the same? I'm hoping that the answer is yes - I'm trying to get that down to a science since the milking bucket sits in the barn!!! I need to get it ordered if I can also use it to sanitize all the equipment. Thank you!

    Good morning , great video as always! Question: could this be used in the state of 2 steramine tablets per gallon adding some to the bleach or softener compartment in the HE washing machine for sanitizing? I currently use odoban or lysol laundry sanitizer in those compartments. But steramine would be so much more cost effective. Thank you for all your information!

    When I wash baby cotton diapers in a frontal washing machine, I uses Chlorox with HOT water to be sure to sanitize the diapers. So, the way you explain, it’s better to wash with cold water???

    • @RoseRedHomestead
      @RoseRedHomestead  2 года назад

      Hot water is fine but it will simply drive the chlorine out faster, but you will still get most of the effect. I would not wash diapers in cold water, but maybe warm would work.

    • @danbev8542

      Good on you for using cotton diapers!!! Disposable diapers are clogging our landfills, and I suspect most people don’t know there is an option. I used to use a small amount of bleach, an extra rinse, and hung diapers outside in the sunshine.

    Thanks for the tips. I bought steramine tabs due to your video. Question: I made reusable toilet wipes out of new diapers for emergency supplies. If/when I use them, it says not to use bleach, so I bought one gallon of non-chlorine bleach. I wonder, is steramine safe to use as non-chlorine bleach or is it just as strong as regular bleach on clothing? Can you use it to launder whites that can take bleach?

    Isn’t chlorine only released when Clorox is mixed with ammonia or acids such as vinegar?

    • @RoseRedHomestead
      @RoseRedHomestead  3 года назад

      No, when you smell that familiar Clorox smell, that is a few chlorine gas molecules in the air. When mixed with ammonia and acids, the chemical reaction is instant and released a far greater amount of the deadly gas. Great question! Thanks. Here is an article:
