‘Shining Light’ was Ash’s first single from their third full length, and second number 1, ‘Free All Angels’. Released in January 2001 it was Ash’s fourth Top 10 single.‘Shining Light’ saw Tim Wheeler awarded with an Ivor Novello and consolidated Ash’s reputation for a run of extraordinary singles.
Drawing inspiration from Jack Kerouac’s On The Road, ‘Shining Light’ won the Irish Music Best Single Award and has since been covered by Annie Lennox for her greatest hits and live by Coldplay.
The video was directed by Tim Wheeler’s cousin Darren Tiernan. Tim went through David Blaine style torture as he was submerged for the guts of a day in this water tank.
‘Shining Light’ was closing song of the last episode of science fiction TV series Roswell and has featured in Channel 4’s Teachers.

I know! You don't get lyrics like this very often.
This won an Ivor Novello songwriting award and deservedly so. It's guitar driven shimmering pop at it's best with a gorgeous melody. Best song of 2001. Probably one of the best of the last 25 years. The view count is a disgrace, considering it was a hit at the time aswell.
It is probably worth remembering this was released in 2001, when the words 'social media' hadn't even entered the public consciousness yet. I was 12 years old when this song was released, and I remembering it getting an absolute ton of radio play and the video was shown constantly on music video channels. This song was BIG, but that was at the time 22 years ago, and something being big in its day isn't always represented in current-day social media analytics
@@alexedworthy3441 that is a really good point, also a two edged sword. Stuff that was amazing then really actually stood out and had die hard fans, but maybe didn't get the exposure, now stuff that is amazing has the whole internet to find it and most stays completely submerged by what sells.

The song was made before RUclips and not uploaded on here until 10 years after the song's release. So probably would have been millions if it was uploaded when it was released in 2001.

BBC One Northern Ireland played this at the end of the last programme to be broadcast on Analogue Tevevision. (The Magic Box) I still remember that and it made me cry. It was a simulcast with UTV.

I had never heard of the band Ash until I heard this song at the ending scene of the American t.v. series Roswell. The original Roswell. And I liked it so much that I found out who the band was and started buying their CDs. Still love Ash's songs.
This song has sentimental meaning in my life. I’m 37 and it reminds me of a transitioning period I once went through while recovering from a trauma and I’m not afraid to admit that I’m almost 38 and getting teary eyed by writing this.

My favourite Ash song. I was obsessed with Girl from Mars and couldn't see pat it even though i love all the bands work that was my favourite until Shining light. Beautiful song with great chorus and guitar.

Hearing this for the first time in possibly over a decades made me emotional. This was one of my fave songs when I was mid teens. It gave me so much hope for love, & well now 40 and still no divine intervention or constellations going on for me 😔 Ask is so great the 2x I saw them live❤
