  • The Porsche Taycan is the best performance EV saloon in the world. But is that about to change? The new Audi e-tron GT gets the same twin motor setup delivering 530hp, along with a host of other shared parts. It looks absolutely fantastic. So which of these battery-powered siblings should you buy in 2021?

    I test drove both of these cars and was on the fence. Went with the Audi. In person, the etron looks way better in my opinion and the taycan 4s is actually 30k more because they force you to add all these options or you’ll have to wait over a year for Porsche to make it. For 30k less I got a etron gt with all the options I wanted.

    Although I am behind with this one, I am selling my 2 year old M340i XDrive for an EV so was very interested in this review. I have driven both cars and they are different, having been both a Porsche and Audi owner in the past, and my dislike of the Tesla around build quality and handling, the e-tron GT and Taycan are the obvious choices. The Porsche is sharper and more sporty, agreed, the e-Tron GT is more comfortable for daily/everyday driving and although the fashion is moving to more digital screens/hyper screen in the Mercedes’, they are a nightmare to keep clean and I find myself reaching for screen wipes all the time - again, I feel the Audi has the balance right with some good old fashioned buttons. The build quality, next to no difference at all, both premium German quality as you would expect. The ride, again I feel the Audi is slightly more forgiving in our British roads, and as for the tyre noise/wind noise, again I did not note any significant difference, maybe the porsche marginally edges it but both are quieter than a petrol. So at your closing comment, you intimated it may come down to the looks, I agree to a point (although I feel your are very slightly rose tinted glasses with Porsche), I have chosen the RS e-torn GT as there are just so few on the road and with Audi limiting the number built, then they will always have that exclusivity feel. Also on the wrong side of 50 years of age, I appreciate more comfort than a dynamic ride. Roll on September delivery date………

    This is the second video I've seen comparing the two cars and you both miss a very important point. Value. The only takeaway I can take is that driving dynamics , road noise and brakes are better on the Taycan. Now a reality check for us mere mortals : An Audi e-tron GT starts at £80k, for that you get leather, electronic dampers , quatrro and POWER with a 0-60 comparable to the 4S. A base Taycan RWD starts at 83k, less power, cloth seats, spring dampers. The fun starts when you try to configure a Porsche with a few options and the price skyrockets.
    With an open budget, there's no question I'd love to own a Taycan, but in the 80-90k range the Audi value proposition can't be beat. It's a shame no one ever mentions this or carries out a like for like comparison.

Is there anyone who hasn't realised yet that motoring 'journalism' is actually just a string of infomercials? Neither of these cars would exist if Tesla hadn't started eating into their market. The Model S is quicker and has more range and storage than either of these - plus its own charging infrastructure. I'm sure the Model 3 is smaller than the Porsche and Audi but the same applies. The handling of the S may not be as good but the M3 Performance certainly is and once the S Plaid variant arrives there will be even fewer excuses to exclude Tesla.

    Really interesting Video. I tested both cars on German countryroads as well as Autobahn and came to a different conclusion. I drove three different Taycans and all showed vibration noises coming from the back on less than perfect roads. The very stiff suspension in sport mode seemed to overwhelm the quality of the cabin. The Audi felt super solid in comparison. At higher speeds above 180 kilometers per hour the Taycan front seemed to become a bit light which together with the very direct steering made the car dance a bit. Not very comfortable for long range travel. The Audi showed none of that. With the recuperation turned on, the brakes of the Taycan felt a bit synthetic, as the transition from recuperation to actual braking is not as seamless as in the Audi. And last but not least - for the price of a mildly specced Taycan you get the Audi including the excellent 4-wheel-steering, electronic differential, Head Up Display, cooled and massage seats etc. which in the end definitely makes it the better car at a comparable price point. I am going for the e-tron GT !

    Pity no manufacturer makes a nice looking electric sports saloon that is reasonably priced. All electric cars seem to be full of technology that isn't needed and big batteries that will be used two or three times a year for long range drives to make people think they are so futuristic. It would have been nice if Porsche did a lower spec Taycan with physical buttons like the Audi, smaller battery, single motor but still fast as they most probably would sell more. An Audi A4 size platform with 150 to 200 mile range, four seats and a boot would suit most people. You could then offer a saloon coupe as well as a SUV version and estate, same car different body. You could spec options to your hearts content so everyone could enjoy a nice EV. If the UK had reliable charging network then 150 to 200 mile ranges would be fine.

    There is no way I would take the Audi over the Porsche.
    One thing is the finer details of how it drives, as outlined by Dan Prosser here, but the other thing is the Audi's looks. I just can't get around how stupid front ends of electric cars look when they have fake radiator grilles plastered on to them, or this weird two-tone job this Audi has to make it look like it has that huge, ugly radiator grille Audis have had since around 2004. Remember, EVs don't need radiator grilles up front, as there is no big radiator there, so they need to stop basing their design identity around an obsolete exterior feature.

    The Audi handles extremely well, Porsches are always more fun to drive no doubt but we’re splitting hairs here. In terms of bang for your buck the Audi wins hands down, both cars similarly spec’d in the US is about a $25-30k difference . I love my Porsches but not by that much.

    Touch-screens are great for adjusting settings and anything else you may do WHILE PARKED. Using touch-screens while driving is downright dangerous to yourself and others on the road - similar to texting while driving! Aside from Apple CarPlay, there is nothing in the Audi requiring the use of a touchscreen while on the move. The tunnel-visioned Porsche engineers seem to have tossed all their common sense out the window when designing the “space age” Taycan cockpit. Buy the Audi and live longer!

    Interesting review, but I think you completely missed the point with these vehicles. The Audi and Porsche are price thousands of dollars apart with the Porsche being the most expensive and with the most engineering and refinement as compared to the Audi. They are "brothers" as you put it, but each was designed to a price point and therefore should be ultimately judged with other vehicles in a similar class and price, if there are any comparables at this time. If one could comfortably afford the price of the Taycan, why would the Audi even be considered. Bottom line is the the Audi is a fine / great machine for what it is and does and didn't deserve your soft, Porsche biased assessment, because it isn't quite as good as the Taycan. There's no way that VW would allow the Audi to be as good as the Taycan. I'm quite content with my MK7 GTI for the moment and have no plans for the Audi or Porsche, LOL!! Peace.

  • @KeliK1
    @KeliK1 3 года назад +13

    The Taycan is no doubt a sportier car than the e-tron GT. However I find the arguments you used against the Audi very misleading. For spirited driving, the Taycan is for sure the best here but for comfort driving it can't beat the e-tron GT and many reviewers have confirmed this. I'm not even going to mention the price difference. It's all about suspension and steering tuning and you can't have the best of both worlds. Most people are looking for a comfortable cruiser that would take them from point A to point B whatever the road conditions and the e-tron GT fulfills this very well while not feeling like a boat. The ride in the Taycan will be more connected, but will not be as forgiving as in the e-tron GT on tougher road surfaces. I would like motoring journalists to consider reviewing cars for the average consumer and not for themselves as track rats. These vehicles are built for the public road. Not for the track.
