Don you are the greatest small engine mechanic I have ever had the pleasure of viewing or knowing. You do the step-by-step so well, like you said in this video you don’t have to be a mechanic to change the belts thank you again. Enjoy the cold in Canada lol
My 22 year old Tecumseh 10 HP was badly in need of a new carb. I’ve been an office worker/ trainer so, definitely not a mechanic. I watched your video yesterday and easily changed my carb. This aft I went with my cousin to by a used snow blower. Everything looked good, better than mine, but the owner (a relative) said that the belts might need some TLC. I just watched this, and the fear is gone. Although it worked well enough for the coming storm, and probably the season, it will make for a relatively easy summer job thanks to you. Merci mon ami.
Thank you for posting these videos. My brand new arises aguar wasn't woking and the shear bolts where good. This help me find and fix the issue. My belt tensioner cable had viberated loose and the belt tensioner wasn't making the belt tight enough You saved me a trip to the dealer and I was back to work in less than 30 minutes.. Very greatful for your calm and informative video. 👍👍
These DYI videos are fantastic Don, thank you for sharing your vast knowledge on these snowblower repairs. Watching you step through the process is confidence inspiring and makes the task much easier to tackle at home.
Another great video. I can't believe you have to split the thing in two to get new belts on but my 520 is fifteen years old and no sign of them needing replacement yet ... but that day is coming.
last week's snow was heavy and wet in our area then the next day it went way below 0 F....my brother went to use his blower and as soon as he engaged the auger, the machine died......he wanted me to look at it but I told him it sounds like there is frozen snow in the auger and chute....i told him the keep it indoors and put a heater in front of it.....that solved his problem but luckily, unlike your customer, the belts didn't keep spinning or I would be doing this same repair...great job again Don
I think it's great Ariens uses SAE (imperial system) fasteners. Ariens is made in Brillion, Wisconsin. While my GM car made in Lansing, Michigan has all metric.
Thank you so much for this video! it helped me fix my snowblower. The step-by-step way to do it plus the "be careful with this" parts are very helpful. Thanks
Awhile ago I asked you about a hydrostatic drive snowblower not driving very good when extremely cold. Replaced belt as you suggested and all good now. Replaced both drive and auger belts with kevlar belts. Both belts were less than 1/2 price of OEM rubber belts. Very satisfied with the results and savings.
This guy does GREAT videos. I ran into a couple differences; could be due to slightly different model of Deluxe 28. There were two bolts on each side to break the unit. I could not slip the belts off of the lower pulley. The pulley was too close to the housing. That required removing three bolts from the pulley face to remove it. Put the new belts in place and re-install the three pulley bolts. Easy enough.
Hey Don. Thanks again for the intuitive videos! You’ve inspired me to start my own venture into small engines with a part time small engine repair/maintenance service. Almost a year I to it and it’s going very well!! Thanks again.
Instead of a stool I use a ratcheting tie down hooked onto the top edge of the auger housing and tied to a handle at the operators position. It makes it easier to get the bolt hole alignment "just right". If you tighten the tie down a bit before removing the bolts it takes the tension off the bolts and makes them easier to remove.
OEM belts are defiantly the way to go on these! The belts from when I bought the machine lasted about 4 years. I grabbed a few online saving $10 or so per belt. I didn't even get a season out of them, mid snowstorm belt changes are no fun! Got another set of OEM belts and its been good so far for the past 2 years (even survived snowmageddon in NL!)
Check out kevlar belts. Replaced both drive and auger belts on my snowblower for less than 1/2 the price of OEM rubber belts and they will last probably 3 times longer.
top stuff Donny mate a good detailed step by step and How To Video on Snow Blower owners and they will be impressed yet pleased on this video on replacing the belts from the pulleys and all cheers from Australia to Canada and stay safe during your Winter and we will try and keep cool during our Summer etc.

7:22 any suggestions on what to do if we do strip one of those bolts for the belt guard? My 2002 Ariens has two single piece fingers. One one them is stripped. Seems to working OK as snug as I could make it. Thanks Don.
Great step-by-step video Don! Extremely thorough, as usual. Love it! Would you recommend placing any never-seize compound on any of the fasteners that you removed in this video, like for the two bolts that hold the auger in place?
Back when I was a heavy equipment mechanic (seems like a lifetime ago...lol) we used Loctite Thread Locker on most fasteners. It didn't affect the torque requirements like a lubricant does and kept the fastener from vibrating loose. It also prevented rusting of the fasteners which made disassembly easier. When you put a lubricant on the threads of a fastener and then torque it to spec, you are actually over torquing it...unless the spec is for lubed fastener of course. We did use anti-seize in some cases...but rarely. Ah anti-seize...one of those products that a little (literally) goes a long way...get a small bit on your finger and it magicaly appears all over you...lol.
wait wait, I've got a 25+ year old machine, thanks to you it runs well, but what about the ugly brother belt at the next to those auger belts?? It will probably break this weekend when temp's in upstate NY will drop off the face of the earth, again. love your channel
Hows it man, been awhile i have commented but i been watching. Im over the other guys videos your way more chill, calm and dont hype ya vidoes up with to much info. Cheers old mate from New Zealand
Don's old video "What to look for when buying a used snowblower" was right on the money... Me... I've been fortunate enough to obtain 3 free snowblowers in the past 14 months for my sons and I. Prior to last winter we didn't need any snowblowers but with moves into different houses, and the loss of my sons to help me shovel out my large driveway, it was time! I spent about $240 for parts, lubes and consumables... Skids for all three; scraper bar for one; carburetor and axle bushing for another; and the third one needed a new chute, belts, fuel line, tubes, spark plug, and a valve job due to a sticky exhaust valve. Obviously the third snowblower, which is quite old, was not something you would want to pay to have repaired and it was likely beyond the skills of many... However, it gave me a project for a day or so and, as I'm fond of saying, kept me off the streets and out of the bars. 😉 In the end we have three strong running machines that on their first outing, which lasted about two hours for each, did a great job. Thanks for the inspiration Don!
once again, great video. Did you do a video to replace the traction belt on an arien? mine keep coming off the pulley. Why is that? friction disk is going away? belt stretched?
Thanks dony7boy73. I have a 10 yr old Ariens and after a carb cleaning (watched your video) works ok now. I'm sure you have a video for older models. I'll be sure to look. Appreciate the channel.
Thanks for another great vireo with great instructions ..You should do one out in the snow and one with chains on the tires ..How 75% of use will be doing .. 😉
Hey dony..dony I gave a 30 inch simplicity 420cc blower (2018)..does the auger belt also spin the impeller?.. if yes,is it self tightening?...ty...great videos btw..🙂🙂
I want to replace a drive belt and auger belt on a real old snowblower. Not even sure of the make but it could be a BayCrest. I can't read the writing on the belts. Now I measure the belts to be about 39" on the outside. Now do I have to compensate for the stretching of the old belts? One website says to take 2" off the outside measurement of the old belts. What is your recommendation? Thanks. Love your website. I always check your site before I start doing repairs on sma;ll engines.
Hi Thank you for the nice Video on Auger Belts. My Ariens 28 Deluxe purchased in 2015 Electric Starter will not Engage the Flywheel. It spins but will not engage. I cannot get this Electric Starter off of the Machine. Do you have any Videos on How to Remove the Electric Starter?? Most all of the Bolts that I can get to have been removed but for the life of I don't see how to remove it. I have Ordered a new one, but I can't remove the Old one. I appreciate any Help that you can give me on this problem... Thank you Ron in the State of Maine
Another informative and easy to follow repair procedure, thanks. Can you tell me what the tool clipped to the front over the auger is for, living in England we never see enough snow to warrant a snowblower.
It's used to clear blockages which can happen from wet snow and slush fouling the opening between the impeller housing and chute. At least that's what I use mine for, but to be fair, I've owned a snowblower for less than a month.
Check the bolt on the pulley also I used to have a 2019 professional 32 that on the first use the bolt came loose and the pulley walked off the crankshaft and melted a perfect circle in the cover.
Don, what do you do about new belts that stretch after you give the machine back to the customer? I had two comebacks for new belts that stretched during a big nor'easter and fell off the pulley.
Many snow blowers are belt specific to the OEM belt due to the design of the pulley. I found this out with MTD. After market belts can be hit or miss concerning how they sit in the valley of the pulley. A belt that is too wide sits too high and can end up hitting the belt stop guide causing friction and burn the belt. The worse part of a burned belt is the rubber that builds up on the engagement pulley. I had to scrape the built up rubber off the pulley. The strings from the belt was wrapped around the pulleys and jammed the drive pulley so the wheels wouldn't even go.
Donyboy73 which snowblower is the best Ariens or Craftsman my choice is Ariens. I’ve seen a lot of people buys Craftsman snowblower because it’s cheaper than Ariens. They sell Craftsman snowblower at Lowe’s
I would like to see changing a friction disc on a 45 inch walk behind snowblower hopefully someday has one of them because there's more parts to move and I have one i like to see how he does it
Great video! I have a Ariens Deluxe 28 that's about 8 years old. I don't see any wear on the belts currently. Would it be wise to replace them and the traction belt as maintenance? Or is that more of a part that only needs replacement when its damaged. I'm in Buffalo NY so the machine has seen a fair amount of use.
Hello Dony, I still have hope you can do a video on replacing the friction disk on a 1969 or older Ariens 10000 series (even the 1973 10000 series is straight forward) if one ever comes in as it is a lengthy process and there are NO good videos that I can find after searching for several years now!
@donyboy 73 I use a lot of hardware store belts because they are easy to buy and keep stock of, do you also stock and use hardware store belts or do you always go to the dealership?
I have an issue, my ariens deluxe 24 the auger will not stop when the lever is released, still spins. When it started doing it I did smell like rubber/belt hot and some belt smoke. How would I fix that
Been watching you from the beginning. Great videos. Do you recommend putting those rubber kits on the impeller blade to close the gap in the housing? Thanks.
My belt pulley burned a hole in the plastic belt guard because the belt guard dipped toward it. After installing a new plastic belt guard, I also install a third belt guard screw at the top of the housing in addition to the regular bolts on the side of the housing. A short self-tapping hex bolt solved what I consider to be a design flaw. That plastic belt guard will eventually bend inward, rub against the pulley, and burn a hole in that plastic. It might take a few years but it will eventually happen!
I found on some you need to engage auger control enough to clear a belt brake lever when putting belt on large pulley. oops dony covered that just after I posted this comment.
