  • Legendary filmmaker James Ivory on the first loves (and first heartbreaks) of Merchant Ivory Productions and CALL ME BY YOUR NAME. Ivory, nominated three times prior for the Best Director Oscar (A ROOM WITH A VIEW, HOWARDS END, and THE REMAINS OF THE DAY), won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay for Luca Guadagnino’s CALL ME BY YOUR NAME, starring Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer. The 89-year-old multihyphenate is now the oldest-ever winner in the Academy’s history.

    I loved Maurice so much, it really showed the reality of not just forbidden love, but rejection and pain. I’m glad Morrie ended up happy in the end, if only Clive allowed himself to have that same joy.

      Clive was never going to win if he chose his heart. Few people realize that Clive was already a broken man before he met Maurice. That is the great tragedy of his character. His life was already planned out for him the minute he was born. Belonging to the landed gentry, titled and heir made it that he had very little control of his destiny. Clive knew from a young age he was gay and suffered for it. Religious, sensitive and an intellectual he had a nervous breakdown at 16 and had to be removed from school. He alienated himself from the other boys growing up for fear he might corrupt another boy. Clive was torn between a sense of duty and love and he ultimately sacrificed the latter to keep the former. The change Kit Hasketh-Harvey and James Ivory with Clive's change of heart was much better in the movie than the book.

      What made Maurice so special for me is how it dealt with the heartbreak and loneliness. It really changed my life.

    Well, we can't be sure about what is going to happen now in the sequel, but to anyone who did read the book, we know that Elio been in plenty other relationships after Oliver and some of them even made him feel like he finally got over it, but everytime they meet again Elio realizes that he may have loved many people in his life, but he never did and never will love anyone like he has always loved Oliver. To me, this is great love, that kind that never actually dies.

      The last section of the novel, in which they meet again exactly twenty years later, starts with the sentence "Last summer he finally did come back." It makes me wonder what happens after the account of their last reunion, at the present time of the novel's narrative, and what happens afterwards.
      If we were to follow the novel's setting of the entire story beginning in the summer of 1988, that would make the reference of the last summer they meet in 2008. Later that year, Barack Obama was elected, and California voted for Prop 8 that overturned gay marriage, initiating a stream of activism and court challenges for marriage equality. During that time, Obama had also ended "Don't Ask Don't Tell," reversed the administration's stance on DOMA, and become the first sitting president to support full equality for LGBT citizens. Would Elio or Oliver be led, or influenced in any way by this Zeit Geist that eventually brought the 2013 SCOTUS decision of Windsor and the 2015 decision of Obergefell? I look forward to an ultimate happy ending between the two, but would accept whatever character development that needs to occur.

      It's not a love story - Elio was used and manipulated by Oliver. The characters have no development. The sequel is as bad as Aciman's ripp off Lolita writing style... ( Lolita is a good read though- sad story)

  • @rumblefish9
    @rumblefish9 3 года назад +12

    I liked Maurice more. CMBYN just had creepy vibes because Elio was 17 and Oliver wss 24. It didn't help that Armie looked so much older and Timothie looked younger than 17. I'm not even entirely convinced Oliver loved Elio. Elio loved him for sure but Oliver seems to toy with Elio's feelings - hot then cold. Getting him turned on only to leave him wanting. Its a pretty toxic relationship.

    • @ultron374
      @ultron374 2 года назад

      Very true- Aciman tried to be a smart ass ripping off some Lolita....Elio and Oliver " relationship" was toxic as Oliver just used/ manipulated Elio and drained him emotionally but people praise is as love story ( well Americans)..i didn't get from them any healthy romantic vibes. Maurice is far better story

    • @distileder891
      @distileder891 Год назад +1

      I feel you, Maurice is better in general, and there are kinda creepy vibes with their age gap, it can feel uncomfortable at times. However, I still think it's a good movie, because there are certain aspects with which people can reflect themselves upon them. Plus, if you haven't done it already, I'd recommend you the book. I personnally think it is better than the movie, and you will realise Oliver is not actually as bad/mean as you think he is.
