    You should isolate the plants that have the mealy bugs & try bottom watering for a while to keep the top of the soil dry. The mealy bugs travel, so you may want to separate the plants that are in contact with it. (Also, maybe keep an eye out for cross-contamination from the watering can?)

    Julien I fricking love plant content. Can I share stuff about Calatheas? I'm obsessed with them because they're so sensitive yet so simple. They hate direct sun as they burn easily, they like humidity, a moist topsoil but (not over moisty) and also need filtered water. If you keep a few of them together they can create their own humid environment. You can also just mist the leaves (you will have to gently rub them down occasionally after this as they get water marked) or leave a tub of water nearby to create humidity for them. Once the leaves start curling you know its unhappy and it can quickly die as the plant is wasting so much energy on the curling. But it can be easily fixed by finding out which thing is causing the curling! I believe in youuu!♥

      Gnats are kind of part of plant life. Boiling soil is a nuisance and won’t stop gnats from coming in later and colonizing. They can be minimized with neem oil spray and sticky gnat traps. Test neem oil on part of you plant before full use incase your plant reacts poorly. Avoid sticky traps if you have a curious pet like a cat or whatever. If gnats are a deal breaker for you, get only cactuses, succulents, or other plants that want to dry out between waterings. I’ve never had larger flies living in my plants so I don’t think that’s a worry. Do a lot of research before picking a pesticide as they can be hazardous to you and your pets when used indoors. Happy planting! ☺️

    Julien, try your hand at some IPM for your pest problem. "Integrated Pest Management" encourages very little to no chemical intervention. The idea is to have healthy cultural practices paired with natural pesticides. For example, understanding how overwatering can lead to root rot, fungus, moisture loving pests. There are many at home remedies for pests as well as natural options out there like horticulture oils, vinegars & sprays. If you have a compost, making compost tea would be great for your plant health as a foliar spray. Also consider this: most plants like to dry between waterings because not only do plants need water to absorb nutrients from the soil, but they also need oxygen. A perpetually wet or moist plant will prevent the oxygen uptake into the roots! [if you know this already cool! just thought I'd offer some tips after seeing your mealy buggo problem + I hope you figure it out!] Also, I think your alocasia needs a humidifier as well + those babies can die fast if they are over watered.

    I have 5 different calatheas, as a newbie, and the one is struggling because I had to treat it for spidermites. The rest are great. Two are in the bathroom so humidity is fine for them. The other two I just mist occasionally.

  • @katelyngummere
    @katelyngummere 2 года назад

    you could also mist your calathea more often to increase humidity. like every other day so they don’t get bugs and when you repot it’s better to go two inches wider

    Hey julien! You should try the same potting mix but instead of potting mix use coco coir! It’s a by product of coconuts and has the same function as your potting mix which may contain peat moss which is an product that is pretty harmful to harvest from our important bog ecosystems! I hope you give it a try someday as a beneficial substitute if you haven’t already. Not all potting mixes include peat moss but I have found that most do. Hope you’re having a wonderful time ❤️

    Gotta do some plant care this morning, I find this is appropriate .
    I also want to add that the aesthetic of that room is great, one day I'll have an art room similar.

    Beautiful Hoya 'Krimson Queen'! I loveee Hoyas too, so easy. Second favorite only to Alocasias. :D
    You probably already know this, but JUST IN CASE:
    Dab Mealybugs with ISO alcohol on a Qtip, either 70% or 90%, doesn't matter. Kills them instantly!
    Distilled or rain water will help with your Calathea 'Medallion'. Tap water has a lot of chemicals (especially chlorine) that slowly kill Calatheas. Alternatively, let a pot of water sit out overnight and that helps dissipate the chlorine. I'd do the same with your Ctenanthe 'Grey Star', as they're both in the Marantaceae family.
    I work full time for a plant shop, so I can't help but help with plants!

      Lolol you do want you gotta do when the outside weather isn’t favorable or you can’t be bothered to leave the house. I got a miniature shop vac for my plant room and it’s amazing. Can repot over a half a dozen plants and when the shop vac is done, all the evidence is gone

    Love this video! Would you consider quarantining your plants that currently have mealy bugs? To keep the rest safe and healthy? Or does that mix you add to the soil stop reproduction very quickly? You have such a beautiful plant collection, I’d really hate to see any of them die via infestation🥺 Keep doing what you’re doing if it’s working fine though, they all seem to be thriving!

    I've just had to quarantine some of my plants that have got fungus gnats. Vinegar traps in every room, smells lovely!

    • @ohrats731
      @ohrats731 2 года назад

      You could try sticky gnat traps. They don’t smell and I find they work better. You can buy them in bulk for fairly cheap on Amazon but I haven’t had any luck finding them at local stores unfortunately

    • @joannas44
      @joannas44 2 года назад

      @@ohrats731 oh, I wasn't being sarcastic about the smell, I love vinegar! I was looking at the sticky traps today, and I'm going to try coffee filters in the bottom of the pots when I change the soil (the gnats are down there) so they can't get back in. I've done a potentially risky bleach soak in the meantime, to kill as many of the pre-wings ones as possible, and hope the plants survive!

      Mosquito bits & neem oil help. I miss Mosquito bits in the soil, the soak some in water when I water 2x a month and add Neem oil spray to the top if new outbreaks happen.

    Hiii my plant got those evil ass bugs too and I got rid of them by using a little alcohol, a little dish soap, and a lot of water on cotton balls and I wiped off each leaf and stem. for a couple weeks i just sprayed that mix on them and now it’s healthy :) I separated it from my other plants too, that might keep the bugs on that plant from spreading bugs to other plants.
