Since most helmets use expanded polystyrene (EPS) for energy management, the foam beads can lose their energy dissipating characteristics over time. Giro recommends helmet replacement after 3 years and that recommendation saved my life. Helmets should definitely be replaced after a crash, but a hard fall or even rough handling like dropping a helmet can damage it.
Could I use my nephews skate board helmet ? I do have a cyclists helmet but it's really big I look like one of princess lis's bodyguards when dearth Vader attracted her diplomatic shuttle

Helmets from different manufacturers are made in different shapes for different size heads. I cannot wear Bell helmets but Giro, Lazer, and Scott are good fits. Never buy helmets online; get to a LBS and try them on before you buy. Some mfrs provide added foam cushions to customize the fit.
Always use the one that offers maximum protection specially when hitting the road. Cars, especially trucks, will not give way to you. If they do, you're lucky.
Riding on the street is just as dangerous as riding on a closed track course or up in the mountains. I think everyone should have a complete head and face protector.

If you think about it a full face helmet is better if your riding on the road in New York. I will use a full face helmet in the winter.

Oh, and the CPSC says helmets should be replaced every 5 to 10 years and the Snell Memorial Foundation stands firm on five year replacement intervals.
