It doesn't take a mastermind to break into and rob a vault in a bank but it does take a mastermind to get away with it and keep the secrets for a lifetime.

Especially even while under custody. French Police are surely a joke for having the mastermind under custody and still not being able to get the stolen loot.

I watched another documentary about the same robbery. Because there was no violence used, this was legally considered a burglary and theft. No one was sentenced to more than 4 years in prison. With such a lenient sentence, you're better off just confessing to get it ower with. Then you can spend the rest of your life living comfortable without looking over your shoulder.

What an interesting story. I'm sort of glad he got away. The no guns, no killing no hate makes me think he wasn't a "bad" man, didn't want to hurt people and wasn't in a gang or a career criminal. I know what he did was wrong, but I can't help thinking the way I do. And because he was never caught, he obviously did no more crime and probably let a simple existence. And the bank was insured so only the insurance company really suffered, and I've had some really bad experiences with them so I have no love for them.... cheers, and great video that was well presented.

    Sans Haines (Without hate)
Et Sans Violence (And Without Violence)
    The narrator says:
    Without weapons
    Without violence
    Without hate
    Why the difference?
Seems to me the mastermind was especially proud of the lack of violence and felt strongly enough to emphasize that sentiment during a brief, but important time.
Seems to dilute the quality of expression to "make neat" at the cost of what was already lucid and unusually effective.

That and a bit of, "It's nice (sorry, "neese") to see the rich bastards take it in the shorts for a change." Rumor had it they brought food and wine with them (the were French, after all) and taped up assorted pornographic pictures and other embarrassing stuff they found in various boxes, along with identification of which box contained them. Not sure if that was true, but it should have been.

Honestly I know a job like this takes a team so you've no choice but to trust others but then you run the risk of 1 or 2 idiots messing everything up by doing something stupid, telling the wrong person, bragging or as in this case trying to sell marked bars of gold to a bank, which is obviously going to get reported to the police and lead to them being caught. Once caught you can almost guarantee anyone idiot enough to try and sell marked bars to a bank will talk and that's that. Why they didn't melt the bars and all the other gold down is beyond me it's like despite planning such a brilliant crime in every detail and spending as much time as it takes to ensure every single thing has been accounted for. As soon as the robbery is done they've given absolutely no thought at all to what to do from that point. Like they haven't even considered how they'll hide their take, how they'll make the things taken untraceable or what they'll do if anyone connected with the crime is arrested.
One of the reasons that most of the people involved and the majority of the takings from the Brink's Mat Gold robbery were never caught or the money and gold found was the fact they had a decent plan for what to do after the robbery. How to make the gold untraceable, how to split the takings and then totally separate staying away from each other, etc. Yes 2 were caught including the main man but even them, despite having to spend a fairly long time in jail managed to keep the money they made from it and came out of prison to a world where they'd never have to work again. Most importantly they both kept their mouths shut and didn't grass on anyone else involved. They already had someone ready to melt down the gold and recast it in to new totally untraceable bars and a buyer lined up to then buy those bars.
By far the worst example of this is the bank robbery in Brazil which was planned in every detail and those details were absolutely genius. The heist went off perfectly, they stole a fortune and left absolutely nothing behind to tie them to the robbery. They'd basically gotten away with it completely, they weren't even on the polices radar as suspects. But as always if you involve more than yourself some idiot is going to talk or do something to f it all up and in this case one of the robbers, who's house they'd used a couple of times to talk about the details etc decided to tell his wife all about it, what they'd been talking about, who the others were, etc he then decided it'd be a really good idea to cheat on that very same wife he'd spilled everything to.... Absolute genius obviously. She, after finding out he'd cheated went to the police and told them everything he'd told her and everything she'd seen or heard even though they'd made sure she couldn't hear what they were talking about at the time she'd still seen their faces and then had the rest of the details filled in by her husband. So they were all caught, a lot of the money was returned for reduced sentences and despite basically pulling off the perfect crime they all spent a few years in jail and at the end of their time came out to very little profit from a job that had basically set them up for life if one idiot had just kept his mouth shut and/or kept his cock in his pants and not cheated on his wife.
