I would suggest you put numbers on the other side as well so it's visible to the postman as he approaches your box. Very nice design.
I can't believe they didn't do that
As someone who has driven an ambulance in the past, I can’t emphasize enough how important it is to have the house number visible from every direction.
A festool track saw and a Ryobi miter box. Now that’s two completely different worlds.
Haha yea for real
@@justinandjessdesigns you did a great job with them
Right! Total opposite ends of the spectrum.
I came here to say the same thing!
Got a good miter box. 😊
Nice job. The snow plows in my town would aim at it just cause it's so nice.
😂😂😂😂😂
I love how well it matches the house
We built one of these this past weekend. Came out great!
You got me at Desmond…a delightful sponsee indeed👍Great job on the Mailbox too👍😊
Great plants. Grasses are so cool with the purple Verbenas. Cherry Laurel may become a giant. 😮
I love your new mailbox. I have been looking for ideas because I'm changing up my front yard and need to move the mailbox and this one is great!
wow looks amazing
Hi from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷..!!!!!
As a Mailman I never thought I’ll see this ….
Because a lot of people don’t take care of their mailboxes
Teamwork, great job guys!
Exactly! Thank you!
That turned out so well. Desmond, you did a great job helping mom and dad. I have a similar plant like what you planted and it is a variety of Juncus.
Thank you! He did a very good job :)
Desmod is a dog - Humans are the owners or care takers - not the father and mother - If Desmond gets a tumor, the Human owners will humanely put him down - but if it was a CHILD to which they would be Mom and Dad, they would not make that decision, they would spend all their money including the new mail box to save the child and keep him/her alive. We all need to learn the difference - I have animals at home too -
That's absolutely the best-looking mailbox surround that I have ever seen. You two are truly artists.
Nice build! I would also add some sort of base and over coat to sustain the years of harsh weather.
Looks sturdy.
Looks great
Really nice Job!! There is so much you could do with that design...like putting a wood burning design on the bottom or putting an oval metal inlay there...the list is endless. Thanks for the idea!! (It looks great just the way it is Too!!)
Yes agreed, lots of room for inspiration!
5:13 Aussie sighting! The mailbox turned out great!
Très belle construction ❤
Excellent job!
thx!
Great outcome! Beautiful! It would have been great to show how the posts were attached.
I love your ideal for the mailbox. I will be using this
Awesome! Thank you for watching!
You guys did s super, beautiful cool 😎 job, keep it going 👏👏👏
thank you!!
Love this!!!
Thank you!
❤that looks so good
Thank you ❤️
Looks great.
thank you!
Really nice job
Thank you!!
i like this im gonna have to do the same thing. thanks for the idea!
Thank you for this video. I have leftover composite decking and facia that I’m going to use to build the same design.
What would you do differently if using composite decking? No sanding or maintenance, I guess. Would everything else be the same?
Nice idea,thanks
Just came across you video while searching “how to build a mailbox”…and so happy I did! I hope to try this!
Get it!!
Great job ° I have all of my materials and I hope to have it completed in the next few days 😀
You got this!
Go Desmond!!! 🥰
Great work - I want to do this!!
Festool track and ryobi miter 🤯
Very cool! Hope your channel gets to one of views!
Thank you!
Looks fantastic. Could you please post a link to the solar light?
Awesome mailbox! I have a two and a half year old lilac Border Collie,Duke looks a lot like Desmond, such cool dogs.
Thank you! I bet Duke is a cutie 🥰
@@justinandjessdesigns He is quite the character! Thanks for the reply and have a great weekend.
I love love love your gorgeous Aussie! He’s handsome as can be, I have a mini myself and had a standard male before he passed. Not everyone should own one because the amount of work they take but they’re worth it! Like the mail box but the glory goes to the Aussie hands down
They are SOOO much work! But it totally worth it, he's the best :)
Looks great, two thoughts. 1. Would it have made sense to pour the concrete around the post and avoid having to use anchors? 2. When using rebar, it’s best to try and get it in the center of the pour. It’s a good idea to put something under it to hold it up off the bottom. 🙂
Thank you! And yes setting the post in concrete is another way. That seemed too permit to me lol and I will keep that in mind next time!
I would argue that if it was hit by a vehicle it would snap the wood and he would be screwed but the way it is it would just tear out of the brackets most likely and he could easily rebuild it if needed. I would do it his way to be honest. Some chicken wire would have been better then a single piece of rebar but its better then nothing I suppose. I also would have went bigger and deeper with the footing as if its hit the way it is it will probably just fall over with the concrete attached. I deep 3 foot hole pier with some rebar in it coming up to the base with chicken wire would have been best. If it is hit and what I said above happens then try the pier method on the rebuild.
I’m sure your sweet little dog will “christen”the new mailbox and show his support! 😂 or my dog would!!🤣🤣🤣! Looks great btw!
That's really cool looking. I have a crappy mailbox, I also have 4x6 treated posts and probably 60 cedar fence pickets out in the garage, hmm... 😆
You can do it!!
Looks fantastic! Can you please share a link for that solar light you used?
Def interested in the solar light info as well!
Great job i need to fix mine now lol I give it a 11
Are the cedar 1x6 or 1x4?! Thank you!!
Very Very nice !!! Im going to so the same thing ❤🎉
Very Nice
Very nice! I had one of these built last year + a matching fence. I've had so many compliments, but the truth is, y'all's design looks a little better! If I'd seen this one first, I would probably have requested this model.
I used the exact same numbers, but I put them on both sides. Also, I mounted them horizontally instead of vertically. If you haven't already, be sure to treat the wood so that it doesn't turn gray. Gray doesn't jibe with that mid-century vibe. 😉
BTW, love that dog. 🥰🐾
Yes we will eventually put a finish on it!, Thank you for watching!
@@justinandjessdesigns J&J, great work! I work mostly with Cedar and have some experience in testing different stains that withstand UV rays, rain..ect. If i may make a suggestion, Vermont Natural Coatings (Amazon) has by far outperformed all others in the hot TN sun.
@@corystuard6251 awesome we will check that out, thank you!!
Hello, excellent work, please where you bought the rechargeable light, thank you very much.
Unwarranted advice: i had trouble getting repeatable cuts on my miter saw until i started using stop blocks. I keep my miter saw on a mobile base so i can take it to a client's location so i just throw a sacrificial fence on the saw and clamp the stop block onto the fence. You get less tear out using the sacrificial fence so win win. Cheers
Yes a stop block is always beneficial! Ours stays in the truck most of the time for jobs too
Was it very sturdy? Love the look and I just did the exact one but I found it kind of wobbly just using the post bases
it was at first but now that the concrete has cured and the soil has settled it's very sturdy.
Looks good, how stable did it end up being? I would've been OCD and likely did some cross-bracing on the two posts since they would be hidden anyhow.
We thought about doing that! It’s good forward/backward, but side to side it’s got a little give
❤ it, I'm redoing my mailbox, and thanks for the inspiration. I'm using reclaimed wood to give it a unique look. Can't wait to start today. Your inspector did a great job!😊
Wonderful! Hope it went well!
Do you have electricity out at the mailbox? How did you run the corded power tools?
Yeah..........I just finished my $450 with composite decking boards and aluminum caps that I bent at work attached with stainless clips i made as well to hide all fasteners, and counter flashed. Planter box with drain hidden through the structure. Low voltage lighting to light up the raised numbers on both sides, and interlocked all wooden structure together with glue and lags. It's stupid dope and I inspired my UPS dude as well.
How stable did it turn out to be? Seemed like the base was pretty shallow, Id think a good wind would blow it over. Love the look of it nice work!
I’m going to do something similar but with 18”x24”x5.5” base…it uses about 4 bags of concrete so I should be good 🤣
Love Desmond.
Desmond is the best 🥰
Nice box ! I would have put the numbers on the other side, for the mailman ... as he approaches the box, he would see the numbers. Unless of course the mailman doesn't have right-hand drive for curbside delivery. Good job! One thing I worry about tho ... it might be a wind-catcher; IOW's, it's not just a simple post, it's more like a wall, or a fence. Hopefully you don't have much wind where you are. You certainly did a lot more research, tho, than the average DIY mailbox-builder. Congratulations!
Thank you so much!
Casually whips out a festool track saw for rip cuts. I like it, Justin!
Edit: Loved the sponsored plug. That's genius!
That's good a new target for the snow plows !😬
Good thing we don’t have snow plows 👏🏻
@@justinandjessdesigns yes it is, because that would have been a waste of time and money, been there, put mine in a 5 gallon bucket and buried the bucket, the snow plows have no mercy, or the drivers make bets on how many they can destroy! 👍
@@kimberlyjordine8115 oh no!! Yea I can see how that’s possible if a place gets snow that covers the mailbox!
@@justinandjessdesigns lake affect snow from Lake Michigan, a lot of it and wet!
Just had a question, while the concrete was still wet couldn’t you have inserted the hardware so you didn’t have to drill?? Looks amazing ❤
Yes you can def buy the hardware that will set in the concrete!
yes. that's what the other channel that built this same thing two years ago did.
How is it holding up? I always see people say wood shouldn't touch the ground. I wanna do this but worried of wood rot
Nicely done. Curious if you will have Numbers on the opposite side for those people coming from the "wrong" direction? Or are you on a one way street? Thumbs up
Thank you!! Just on the one side since we are in a dead end
I saw that you used a solar light! Can you post the link?
Looks awsome. I live in south so i dont have to worry about these snow plow everyone in comments are talking about 😂😂😂
Exactly!!
Any reason why using mailbox post spikes instead of pouring a concrete footing wouldn't work just as well for this project? I'm considering trying this unless there's a downside that I'm not considering.
Fill in the wasp nest entrance hole and you'll be golden 😊
Loved the video. Beautiful mailbox. I'm sure it adds GR8 curb appeal to your home. I have a question. Why use post base and wedge anchors instead of setting 4x4 in the cement base? Is there an advantage to doing one over the other?
Just preference, thought it would be easier to make fine tune adjustments for the exterior trim
What is the light you used above the numbers?
Looks great, what solar light did you use for the numbers on the mailbox? Thank you
Found one at target at the time
@@justinandjessdesigns thank you
How many fence pickets did you need?
Hi, which gauge of nails are u using??
I'm doing something similar but I'm putting the post in concrete - not doing the pad.
Next time pour a Little concrete, then lay your rebar.. or block it and tie it so it’s floating and ends up in the Moshe of the slab. Also just put a moisture sleeve on the 4x4 and sink it right into the concrete and avoid those silly anchors lol
On the note of using cedar pickets , you should def put an oil finish or a finish in general on it or it will be solid gray by this time next year and look 100 years old lol
Thanks for the tips!
I've seen a handful of ideas, I kinda like yours better
What was the cost of the whole thing including mailbox?
looks cool but I dont see it lasting very long being set only 3.5 inches deep. Wind and frost heave will be problem. Most posts are set at least 12" under ground. I go minimum 24" for lateral support.
Exactly. 3.5” isn’t a foundation. It’s a sidewalk. Even the old crappy mailbox had a one foot foundation. With as much face as this design has, I probably would have bent rebar into Els and built an inverted Tee foundation.
I don't know how I got here...& I have a super dope Mailbox at every house BUT I'm bout to choke that Subscribe Button clear out for the Beetlejuice Clip. No Thank You's necessary & Keep the change - Please, I insist! ++++++
Also, this Design looks absolutely fabulous. That's whats up when you can make $45 of Supplies look like a million bucks!
you make seem so hard and complicated, but it look nice .. actually extremely easy to do
The sledge hammer mailbox remover man 😂
Best way to do it!
Can you post a link for the solar lights you used? Thanks so much!
Yes they are threshold brand from target! We also put some from Amazon in the description!
i saw somebody with this design mail box. in side of the mailbox (i deliver mails) they have electrical parts there. i guessed the numbers light up at night because they have solar panels sticking out of the woods
We thought about doing some type of batter powered LED, but solar works just fine! That area gets a lot of sunlight
Question, from which side the USPS truck is coming from? Number seems to be in the back....
Coming from the side that will see the numbers
Is the numbers on the right side of the mailbox ? isopposite
For us yes
What was the light you added above the numbers called?
Just a cheap solar light from Target :)
😂😂😂😂 I wanted to jump in the Vidoe n just take the tools from you dude like omg in this trade we say you do know how good a person is by the tools they have so what did I expect was going to happen RUclips you did it to me agin 😂
Bro what are you talking about! 🤣
That looks great, I might add the street number to both sides though. Thanks for the idea!
Ain't the numbers suppose to be on the other side. Postmen drive like Londoners don't they?
Nice, you're a cute couple. Your numbers are supposed to be there for the mail carrier to find your mailbox when they're driving up to it from the opposite side that you put your numbers. Please move them to the other side to help delivery drivers find you.
Question, so for the wood is that treated for outside or just regular cedar wood
This was exterior grade cedar
Gotcha thanks!! Ready for the weekend 🙏🏽
Is the postman vehicle able to get close without hitting the end of that structure?
yes absolutely
You did right by not putting the post in the ground because it will not rot and easy to fix if someone backs into it
I like it. My mailbox is in my neighbor's yard, so I have to ask before doing anything.
But, FYI, your neighbors probably would love for you to put the dog inside while you're using your nailer. I would.
He’s the best behaved dog in the neighborhood trust me
What about the 24" requirement into the ground?
As far as we understand, that’s only if your setting post
What was the width for the cedar pieces?
3/4 I believe
What the inches on the number?
Why not set the post in the concrete ?
Did y’all use a stain?
We eventually added Helmsman Poly
This looks fabulous …. and this comment is totally based on the destructive nature I sometimes see … but sitting on a platform of concrete, looks easy to tip over. You could see little wobble as you power nailed on the side. If it was me, I would have gone down a foot or so with the concrete … but again … I didn’t even want to say anything, this looks so awesome
No you’re completely right! Once we put the soil and some rock down it definitely weights it down
I agree my first thought was with time ground movement and wind with the hight of the flat structure will start leaning farther and farther. But it looks great
GOOD HUSTLE DESMOND.
Shouldn’t the house numbers be on the other side for mail person to see?
