When we saw Sandi had a "favorite art supplies" video, our hearts started beating faster! So proud and happy to see Utrecht Artist Colors made the list- it's a Blick exclusive!
If I may 🙋🏼♀️ Just wanna say that The Daniel smith watercolor sticks are not watercolor crayon, they’re watercolor in a stick. They’re really meant to be sliced up and put in a pallette and used as watercolor, rather than a crayon- that’s why it’s hard to draw with them !
@@22GmaRocky yeah! You definitely can, obviously I wouldn’t tell anyone not to use them how they like ! I’m a watercolor nerd and I know that the Daniel smith sticks are better value for money if you want to try their watercolor- one stick has a lot more paint the the average paint tube from what I understand
You can use them however you want! I like to think that there are no rules in art. :) Daniel Smith themselves have said it can be used in a variety of ways.
I’m the kind of person that has more art supplies than actual art xD and your videos always get me inspired and excited to just lay out all my art supplies and just use everything that I feel like using and have fun
This video was deliciously satisfying to watch! So much eye candy in those beautiful supplies. I can’t wait for a Tombow video. I’ve amassed quite the collection of art supplies in the last couple of years but they bring me so much joy! 🙈😂
I truly enjoyed your vlog!!! I’m a first timer. I’m 73 and I was a constant artist Then life, work, marriage, children,a widow in my mid 40’s. Art and my music teaching .photography all went away. But I’ve really been building my art supplies again and I find myself anxious to draw more. I started pastels and watercolor pencils. So finding your site tonight was awesome!! See you soon!!✌🏻🤠
Needed this video, Miss Sandi! Just seeing you play with supplies and talk about supplies was the cheer I needed to get back into creating. My tools are NOT SHARP but I am excited to sharpen them again thanks to you!
I was plumb giddy when I saw your new video pop up!!!! I enjoyed a cup of coffee while watching you play with the supplies! Thanks for inspiring us! Your videos always make me smile!
Thanks so much for some of those intensive details. For some reason, I had no idea that the Ecoline Brush Markers were refillable! I am totally ordering them now! I do love most of their muted colors. And the Cretacolor Mega Pencils! I adore the absurd size of them. I am not a dainty supplies gal in the least. 🤣
Practical fact: the (Kum) longpoint sharpener treats your wallet and the enviroment a tiny bit nicer. Because of the angle it takes more of the wood and less of the lead, so you can use your pencil longer compared to 'normal' sharpening where you sharpen the lead and wood of equally.
Thank you for this video, Sandi! I love hearing what supplies other artists love. It's the best way to find good supplies, I think! Also, I just had to say... The owl painting at 8:17 (when you're flipping through the sketchbook) is just amazing. I had to go back and pause the video to look at it more!
Hey Sandi, I’m sure someone has let you know by now, but the DS Watercolor sticks are meant to work by wetting from the stick. You can cut them and add them like pans to a palette or take a wet brush to the stick. I live in Seatlle and spent a lot of time down at the store when they were open. They didn’t design them to draw from really. Just a pigment option before they made pans.
Awesome episode! I loved it! Definitely would love to see the using the markers more. I have the eco line and I did not know you could refill them !!!! You blew my mind! Wahoooo!
I was so happy you see your video pop up in my notifications. I do need some new supplies from Santa ! Thank you for taking the time to show us all. You’re the best. Hugs to everyone in the Hester household.
Thank you so much for sharing Sandy!! I was looking for a new water brush as well as sketchbooks. I love when you show us your favorites and how to use them I feel like I learned so much! Hug☕
This video is my favorite of the favorites also! - I do thank you for the time in detailing all of this and will look so forward to future videos of more favorites! - Thank you, Sandi !
I've recently started using the Royal Talens sketchbooks...love them! I have the same green and yellow as you 😆I'd definitely like to buy some gouache paints. I used to have some 20 years ago but they were all such bright colours that I never really used them.
Hi Sandi, I am a new subscriber, you’ve helped me through a couple of miserable flu days the passed days so this new upload felt like an old friend popped up 😄 Today I made some colour swatches of my polychromos collections inspired by you, a nice activity when don’t have a lot of energy but still want to play with colour a bit. Thank you for the lovely videos! Greetings from the Netherlands.
I just watched some of your videos and I must admit you make me feel comfortable with my "bad" art because even if it's not perfect it's still an art and it's beautiful. I think I should appreciate my artworks more. Thank you so much.
I'd love to see a video on how you use pastels? I bought a cheap set and started using it, and I just love that I can add colour while on the go without the mess of water-based mediums
Sandi, thank you for this beautiful video. I enjoyed watching it very much. It’s pure eye candy. We as artists can never have too much art supplies… ❤❤love the tuna can idea 💡 thank you.. 🥰
I'm so happy to have found you on youtube! You have been such a blessing to me. I have been in a major drought of inspiration regarding my art-due to a loss, divorce- in last two years-I've just not had the desire to reconnect with my love of art! I am too precious with my supplies and always want perfection, so that never goes well when you have a low desire to do art in the first place! I'm learning through your videos to have fun and just make marks! I hope it gives me the inspiration to begin again, I kinda feel like I forgot how???? It's a really sad feeling but I'm hopeful. I watch your videos and you have inspired me and made me smile. Just thought I would share with you. I love your goofy nature! God bless.
Thank you for sharing and I’m so sorry that this season is so hard and heavy. I think easing back into your art is the best way. Do color swatches and things that don’t have pressure. Just enjoy the materials and how they feel going down on the page. Enjoy the little things that are so wonderful about just creating
Loved this video, I know that beautiful red box is going to be under the tree for me this year since I know Santa got it for me. I got some ideas for him to put in my stocking now too. 🎅
All the yummy stuff in one place! Completely enjoyed this. Fun to see some of my favs too, and others I'm looking forward to trying :) Thank you Sandi!
Thank you, Sandi, for sharing! I discovered Neocolor II last year and love them too!!!! I have a hard time breaking my pastels and neocolor II. I guess I should try to loose up a bit and start breaking them more in order to use them more freely. LOL.
I bought the Kum pencil sharpener after watching your video. The derwent lightfast & caran d'ache luminance work well together I find. I'm looking forward to watching your coloured pencil video next year as it is my favourite medium.
I'd love you to do a video on how and why you use black. It's a color I never use in any medium. I love the Derwent drawing pencils and look forward to trying their Lightfast series.
Everytime I see you use and mix colours my eyeballs do a happy dance 🥰 I came across the tim holtz watercolour pencils the other day and immediately thought of you. They are pigment sticks, that look like chunky pencils. I don't think they're light fast, but a few people recommended them over neocolor 2s. Maybe a new one for next year. 😊
Hi Sandi, very inspiring to see your favourites and why you love them too. I NEED to go and paint now. Thank you. PS I didn't know the ecoline pens were refillable either!!!! Youve saved me a fortune 😁
@susanloramorris 1 day ago You are such a shining ray of light in my day. I love all your videos. Planning to get the Landscape class soon. I was sad to learn that the Emma Carlisle book on Devon is sold out😢 Thanks you for introducing me. I am now a Patreon of Emma. Have a happy day.
Sandi I loved all of this! I’m wanting to explore matte acrylic paint or acrylic gouache and I’m wondering what your current favorite is? I’ve seen you liking liquitex and flashe and a few others but I’m not sure which brand is your favorite to work with now. I’d like to make a purchase very soon. ❤
I wonder if, with the Daniel Smith watercolor sticks, it might be easier/more intended if you use a water brush with them, take some pigment from the stick, and then lay it down on the paper? This is how I use my neocolor II and inktense blocks when I'm using a travel kit and helps a lot when getting down fine details - though broader washes need a bit more effort. And speaking of neocolor II, I can still remember when you initially opened up the box and didn't realise there was a second layer. 😅 That was fun seeing you open and swatch them regardless
Love these videos! Thank you for sharing. Some of the colors you shared I have never seen before but are just beautiful. I will definitely be adding them to my Christmas list this year 😊
I absolutely loved this video! I’ve been meaning to ask you a question and if you answer it in a future video I’m sure it will help a lot of people: we know that your goal is to paint loosely and we know you can draw and paint realistically. Do you think that’s the path we should follow in our art? I’m just beginning so I’m trying to learn how to see and draw things as they are - I can see there’s a conscious effort trying to go away from that to paint loosely. Do you think both styles feed each other? Could everyone, artists of all levels, benefit from doing both? Love you and your channel! 😊
I loved this video! I think my favorite part was the gouache you showed. Do you actually work with the gouache by sticking the brush right in the tube, or was that just for swatching? The two-stage sharpeners are the best! Blackwing makes one, too, very similar to your Kum sharpener (opens the same way, etc..)
I buy the DS Watercolor sticks as an economical form of watercolor. I cut a bit off and put in half pan and use it as any other pan. You get a lot more paint for the dollar. I agree not a fun smooth drawing experience with stick. Very thick and so much resistance.
I have always struggled with markers- my brain seems to get confused 😅 intentionally working with them more. Would love to see your thoughts on markers! Great video, such a wonderful spread of materials. Thank you!
It's so hard to narrow things down to what your favorites are! Thank you for sharing this and for the links 💕 I've been looking for a sketchbook that can hold up to mixed media - I'm excited to get my order 😁 I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving and I wish you and yours a happy holiday season 🎄🎁♥️

If you dunk it in water or ink (really cool effects) then draw, it will work better. Not by much but better. BTW, I agree, Undersea Green is an amazing color. Off to explore the channel. Thanks for sharing.
*another thing you might want to mess about with would be exploring the shading qualities and potentials of fountain pen inks...Goulet Pens has nearly 800 inks alone and they do sell samples so it is very easy to obtain a lot of variety across the color spectrum and i have a LOT of them as proof on top of over 31 bottles of ink as well...there are also the inks at a personal favorite off of Esty called FoxandQuills where he ships the ink in small Erlenmeyer Flasks which is just as cool as it sounds...some work better than others (obviously) so small scale experimentation is advised but some of the effects i've found with the shimmer and sheening inks have been pretty amazing...the darker inks make beautifully moody storm clouds*
*the samples are small but there's enough there to make some really nice washes...they do sell collections of there most popular or by makers ...i have so many favorites but you would probably like the ferris wheel press inks especially the tanzanite sky...organics studio Nitrogen is also quite nice...collecting inks can get expensive (duh) as is collecting unique limited run playing cards*
… Derwent Drawing pencil -OVER- Neocolor 2!?!?!?!?!?! 🤯😮🤯😮🤯😮💡💡💡🤩🤩🤩 Yeah, I’ve been skipping back and watching that one small clip over and over to try and wrap my little gray brain around that juicy tidbit of generously shared info! I’m definitely going to try that! What other interesting and mind blowing mixed media combos do you have up your sleeve?? Thank you @sandihester ❤
