Depression is powerful and can be very, very devastating. There was a point in my life when I literally felt disappointed that I didn't die in my sleep. I was only 22. If you suspect someone you love is depressed but not seeing treatment, please do whatever you are able to do to push that person toward medical intervention.
Gosh those were thick calluses. You did a good job of trimming them down and debriding the centers of the calluses. I hope we get to see a follow-up on this. Thanks to you and your patient for sharing this video.
This shows the importance of staying in contact with elderly in your family because for him to be diabetic and not checking his pressure and have these on his feet like this are crazy and hasn’t been being maintained, also he also obviously need bigger shoes and some type of moisturizer
As a nurse, I appreciate your teaching methods. You were plain spoken, honest, and none judgmental. Good job and I hope your patient is able to keep from losing parts of his feet due to his diabetes. It is sad that the testing machine is free and the strips cost so much that most people cannot afford them, even with insurance. Keep up the great work.

Omg the last two videos were amazing. The toe with gangrene I thought there is no saving that toe. You did a great job. You are very determined to keep going as long as there’s hope. Many drs would just amputate. This gentleman could find himself in a grave situation if he didn’t come to you. I know it must be very hard to work with people who don’t take care of themselves. This gentleman needs to get very serious about his diabetes. I can’t imagine the pain he’s been under with that foot ulcer. It sounds like he doesn’t know how to test his blood sugar levels or it’s too much trouble. I soak then take a foot brush to my feet at the end of the day before I take my shower. I’ve never had foot issues with my type 2 diabetes. I see my primary doctor every 3 months, my Podiatrist every 6 months. I’ve so far lost 143 lbs over the course of 3 years. Knowing all that can happen to you when you have diabetes was enough for me too get serious about my blood sugar levels. It’s too easy too do. 🦶
I think that he has neuropathy cause anyone else wouldn't even be able to stand walking around like that. The pain would be unbareable. It happens pretty quickly when your blood sugar gets high and stays high. Your feet...and your life is way too important to not do something as easy as checking your sugar, and taking care of yourself...even going to the Dr. It's way too dangerous to ignore. I pray that this gentleman takes a more active role in his health. Check your feet people...and check your sugar diabetics, I beg you. If not for you...then for you loved ones. Good advice, from one who knows. Kudos to you and your doctors for learning how to take care of your diabetes and then having the oomph to get it done-- you will never regret taking care of yourself. I wouldn't exactly call diabetic daily self-care "easy", but it's certainly not impossible either. It can be expensive (test strips, medications, doc visits and lab visits) for those with no insurance, but the day to day management is just something that becomes routine, like anything else we do on an everyday basis. Not hard, just takes some discipline and some insurance benefits or cash.
My mom has type 2 diabetes also, and has for almost 25 years, and I’m glad to say that her feet are okay except for neuropathy. She has managed her condition, and I hope this man has learned something from this experience, and will take better care of himself.

Special shoes, innersoles, test strips, doctors and specialist visits not to mention the need to test, take medication, monitor food intake and practice foot care every day. It all adds to a burden that would be hard to get on top of let alone if a person has mental health issues, is struggling financially and/or doesn't have a good support system in place.

In educating the patient, you are also educating us viewers. I’m an ICU nurse and little pieces of information like this are always helpful to learn, especially since we seem to only focus on the more acute issues during patients’ hospitalizations. But maybe I’ll look a little harder at patients’ feet now and possibly prevent a future hospitalization for them :)

It's wonderful to see this skilled, compassionate doctor provide such needed care and gentle education. I had no idea until I read the comments just how many diabetics are non-compliant. My dad was diagnosed with Type 2 a year and a half ago and has been diligent about checking his sugar and caring for his feet. He keeps a little notebook and pen on the dining room table with his meter and test strips to record the numbers and track highs and lows. It took me several years after my mom passed to convince him to see a doctor, but I'm really thankful he did and is taking care of himself. This video reminds me to tell him how proud I am of him and how much I love him. He's just now recovering from prostate cancer surgery and is, thank God, now cancer-free. We're now working on dietary changes and weight loss.
That was a great job, he needs more help at home with a nurse going through his diabetes mess and blood testing as he doesn't seem too sure of what he is supposed to do. Will you post again on his next visit?
Could be he's never been taught that taking care of his diabetes, testing, meds, doc visits, etc, is something he's responsible for and something that's not impossible to do. OTOH, some people are just kind of "simple" and they can't put two and two together and get four, until it's too late. Others simple do not have the $$$ to purchase testing supplies and see the doctors as often as necessary. I hope that whatever his reasons for not taking care of himself are, he can get some teaching and financial help and get with the program, because it's never too late.
So much has been learned about diabetes treatment. Some folks are holding on to old info. The nutritionists are still keeping carb counts too high for a diabetic person

Idk about the guy in the video but there are a tremendous amount of people who basically exhibit this same behavior despite having access to the medical materials and being properly taught how to care for themselves. So it does not always come down to never being properly informed. This dude would seriously benefit from having a home health aid to help him out. Like he is an A++ example of the type of patient who needs someone else to help him
As a type 1 diabetic in the UK, I am so so thankful that all my medication, foot care, and appointments are free and have not been interrupted by the pandemic. I can’t imagine not being provided with everything I need. I feel very grateful.

I have this callus remover that is used at home and in salons and it would eat that stuff away. My dad has feet similar to that and he is also diabetic and I use it on his feet at least every two weeks. I also use Gold Bond Diabetic Foot Cream on him as well.

I never knew that skin could get that thick and hard to needing nippers to cut into the callus to get rid of it & even doing it that way was tough going. He’s lucky he came to see you when he did as that foot ulcer would of turned really nasty. You’ve done an amazing job on his feet considering how they looked at the beginning.

I'm of the older generation and can remember when as a child The foot washing ceremonies at the little country church we attended. The pastor said to wash anothers feet was the most humbling thing one could do. But you sir take it far beyond that. What you do is remarkable and I do so admire you Dr.
You get quite a workout working on removing calluses. I was sympathy pushing and clipping. Man my arms ate tired and I didn't do it. Funny how moral support comes in funny ways. I guess now you know that I am always lending you my support. Well done Doc. I love how well you explain everything, blunt but kind and just how awesome your bedside manner is. You take care of their feet right down to dry skin when you put lotion on. We need more like you that are willing to go that extra mile for their patients!!

I have this callus remover that is used at home and in salons and it would eat that stuff away. My dad has feet similar to that and he is also diabetic and I use it on his feet at least every two weeks. I also use Gold Bond Diabetic Foot Cream on him as well.
What's the name of the callus remover?
The gold bond doesn't work for me. I live in Colorado and it's so dry here

My mum always made me and my siblings take good care of our feet, wash and moisturise every day. This video has given me way more incentive to keep it up 😭
Diabetes caused this. Not lack of moisturizing. Although that may have helped some. Mostly people just need to manage their diabetes.

I never knew that skin could get that thick and hard to needing nippers to cut into the callus to get rid of it & even doing it that way was tough going. He’s lucky he came to see you when he did as that foot ulcer would of turned really nasty. You’ve done an amazing job on his feet considering how they looked at the beginning.

I have never seen anything like this bad. I am a diabetic and control it through diet. I think so many people ignore it until it’s out of control.
Many people fall through the cracks of medical care and information . Many do not have support services or the financial help needed.
A lot of time they can't feel anything happening because numbness sets in. I have seen so many people loose feet from diabetes related issues.

I'm of the older generation and can remember when as a child The foot washing ceremonies at the little country church we attended. The pastor said to wash anothers feet was the most humbling thing one could do. But you sir take it far beyond that. What you do is remarkable and I do so admire you Dr.
I was raised Primitive Baptist and we washed feet during communion service.

You get quite a workout working on removing calluses. I was sympathy pushing and clipping. Man my arms ate tired and I didn't do it. Funny how moral support comes in funny ways. I guess now you know that I am always lending you my support. Well done Doc. I love how well you explain everything, blunt but kind and just how awesome your bedside manner is. You take care of their feet right down to dry skin when you put lotion on. We need more like you that are willing to go that extra mile for their patients!!
