The beginning of California Street is located at the intersection of Market Street, Main Street, and Drumm Street in front of the Hyatt Regency Embarcadero Center, which is one block away from the Ferry Building. From there, California Street continues through Chinatown, up and over Nob Hill, through Lower Pacific Heights, Laurel Heights, and into the Lake District.
After making a short bend at 8th Avenue, the route continues parallel to the edge of the San Francisco Presidio through the Richmond District until it comes to a dead stop just west of 32nd Avenue in Lincoln Park.
From Van Ness Avenue westward to the dead end past 32nd Avenue in 1928, the last major leg of the final alignment of the Lincoln Highway, the first road across America, consisted of the fifty-four blocks of California Street that led out to the highway's western terminus in Lincoln Park. The alignment of the Lincoln Highway was completed in 1928.
The entire length of the route consists of between four and six lanes.
A trolleybus line operates on the western half of the route between Steiner and 32nd Avenue, while a cable car line operates on the eastern portion of the route between Market and Van Ness Avenue.
