  • Eastland Mall in Ohio. A strange enigma of a mall that's been through the wringer. Bad positioning & crime scared away most of the major chains, but smaller businesses seek refuge in the vacuum left behind.

Judge declares Eastland Mall a public nuisance, allowing for demolition if not cleaned up
by Lisa Rantala Monday, June 13th 2022
COLUMBUS, Ohio (WSYX) - A once iconic mall on the east side of Columbus, Eastland Mall has now been declared a "public nuisance" by the Franklin County Environmental Court.
"This court does find the subject property in this case Eastland Mall to be in violation of Columbus City Code and a public nuisance," said Environmental Court Judge Stephanie Mingo during an injunction hearing Monday.
City Code Enforcement started issuing violations to the owners of Eastland Mall back in 2019 for issues of not maintaining the parking lot, broken and missing mortar and zoning noncompliance. Code enforcement officers took the stand during the hearing to testify many of the same issues existed last week when they last inspected the property.
Neighbors also testified to call the massive 70-acre property an embarrassment to their community.
"On the inside, there's a stench in the air," testified Felicia Saunders. "I don't know what that smell is but it's a very bad stench."
The property manager for Eastland Mall Holdings LLC, Nihal Weerasinghe, took the stand and admitted to having up to 1,200 potholes in his parking lot. He said many have been fixed but neighbors also contribute to the problem by cutting through his lot instead of using the highway.
While removing illegally dumped furniture from the lot and completing a massive power upgrade, management said $258,000 have been spent so far on repairs. However, current tenants not paying rent for months has contributed to a cash crunch which has prevented more from being done.
"This court finds that pace of the work to be absolutely unacceptable," said Mingo before giving her injunction ruling.
She said owners must bring Eastland Mall to compliance within the next 60 days, pick up litter every day and cut weeds and grass at least every two weeks.
If her orders are not met, she will allow the city to abate the property at the owner's expense. She said she would allow for any possible demolition if part of the city's abatement plan.
The case goes back to court on September 22nd.

Honestly, deadmalling in the snow seems kind of cozy. There's something about the cold, wet weather outside that makes the inside of a mall feel even more warm and welcoming than it already is. I can't remember if I've deadmalled in the snow before. I want to say I have at least once.

This mall used to have an amazing Japanese arcade which was the best to go to on cold snowy days. Great video!

2:45 entrance to JC Penney, on the right side used to be EB Games before it was changed to Game Stop. I appreciate you documenting these videos. It gives an eerie look at the past and how these places were once very lively and full of people.

They screwed it up. Eastland mall is closing at the end of 2022. As of now the owners, Eastland Mall Holdings, LLC which is based in New Orleans are trying to schedule it for demolition in 2023. They are supposedly in talks with the City of Columbus about plans to redevelop the property. It will be interesting to see if that goes forward or if the mall just sits there abandoned like Westland mall.

Grew up on the eastside of Columbus and made many trips from the Livingston Hamilton area to the mall when it was under construction back in 68. The first stores to open were Lazarus and Walkers men's store. There was a restaurant on the second floor of Lazarus that looked out over the main floor area of the mall. This was a very popular place to dine while shopping at Eastland.

Rewatching this, and I have to say, I love that you used "In a Snowbound Land" from DKC2 as the background music. That game has one of the best--if not THE best--video game soundtracks ever made.

Decent looking mall. Troubling seeing the leaks burnt out lights and lack of properly clearing the used parts of the parking lot though

I live near Eastland, and I usually go there around Christmas to get gifts from the mom and pop jewelry stores and the Oil Bar. I've got to go back to the Oil Bar soon. I love that store. I've also had great food from their food court. I have eaten at the Caribbean restaurant many times. Eastland is special to me

The anchor store there near the Read & Play Daycare was the Sears and back in the day across from the daycare used to be a movie theater. The Claire's has been there forever. lol The open middle area was JC Penney and where they had their big holiday displays. They even, at one time, had a traveling display of Princess Diana's dresses. At the other end where the Lazarus used to be there was a restaurant in the store on the second floor (which had fairly good food, I'm told). People could eat and watch out over the people milling about in the mall. Right before the mall started to take a turn for the worse they rebuilt the food court, added the Macy's and the new outdoor accessed shops, that's why they look a little different and newer.
I always liked the look of Lazarus with it's blue bricks.

This mall reminds me of Chappel Hill in many ways. This is a much blander mall in comparison, but it is still going. The next time it snows in Houston, hopefully the power stays on so I can experience one of our dead malls in the snow.

Give that mall a hobby lobby and it's thriving again 😂😂😂 Also, if you ever take a trip to Cleveland, can you go to the SouthPark mall in Strongsville? It's not a dead mall, still thriving and is the largest mall in northeast Ohio. Can you put it on the list?

Visit this place very recently and it’s not so good. When you walked in, you get a strong smell of mold. Not only that, a generator blew and they had to rely on construction lights for lighting. Also when entering the entrance of the mall you see nothing but trash all over the place. Quite sad.

I would think this would be a gold mine for the crime mobs growing around the country. There appears to be very little to no security in this mall. I wonder who does the cleaning and maintenance, too?

I wonder if you can see the second floor of the old Lazurus still? I used to look up there and see people dining in the restaurant. I ate there with my dad once, and remember buying a pack of dessert mints for my mom at the checkout. I then lived in the area when I was going to a paralegal program at Capital Law School downtown. I got out when my apartment got burglarized in the middle of the day. It was bad news even then (2006).

I wonder if the rides still work. Just turned 40 this year, and one of my favorite activities is riding the animal riders through Tuttle Mall! I lived in the Eastland Mall area long ago. Luckily, I've upgraded a little, though Tuttle is now what Eastland used to be when I was down there (not great).

I agree about chicken and fries, especially if you get the largest meal of them. For me in my shopping center at this point is: Raising Cane's. Their biggest meal is a lot of food, I think I was left with only fries after eating all the chicken and I think it was mostly the chicken that kept me full. I ate the rest of the fries for the next morning's breakfast as I took it home, I'm glad I accepted the bag to carry it home, even if I had to pay extra for that, lol I think I was just so hungry and tired at that point I even took the extra sauce container which I also needed to pay extra.
I think that day I was carrying around 8 cans of caffeinated Sparkling Ice and two packs of Oreos (the dark chocolate ones, in the thin version) by the time I went to buy dinner and I couldn't wait to take my bag off and put it down on a chair at a table and have some dinner. I still got a workout walking my local shopping center even if it was only a few hours, it's a huge shopping center.
