Stationed in Germany and just ordered this with M-Sport, Harman Kardon and manual trans, no other options. It was 33G after the absolutely sick Military discount.
how is it int the snow though? because i know they dont offer the msport manual in xdrive.
Military discount for cars? Wow
M F RWD 5050 cars with winter tyres drive really well in the snow
LOL..."who am I to talk about lightness" :)
xbradx11 I am not skinny, but you win :)
I really love this car, quick, looks good inside and out, good mpg, and with the M package perfect set up, balanced, and under $40k with the option packages you would want, BMW really did a great job providing the customer with what they want, modernized old school BMW fun, it's like having the E36 again but with better fuel economy
They really did a good job making it sound like an inline-6 in the cabin.
I would agree that the previous 1 series had a stubby rear, but the 2 series is much better. Maybe even looks better than the 3/4 series bigger brothers.
This cars dimensions closely compare to the legendary E-46. The rest of the car closely emulates the E-46, except for the looks (not nearly as classic or symmetrically as good looking), that a side, it performs excellently, especially in the M235 version. I drove both extensively. My impressions were equally favorable towards both. The M-sport package in the 228i or the M-235 is a good choice. To the M-235's credit the engine of the 6 did feel smoother and less strained, though some people might prefer the 4 cyl.'s torquey rpm spin. All said, a fine car.
I’m renting one for my trip to Monterey next month… can’t wait 🙌🏻
I love the front end of this car more than the new 3 series design. The tail light are a little too big though, but other than that its a beautiful car! Love that pearl paint too.
I love my 228i convertible! Just 48000 had been sold and it has the potential to become a collectors item... even here in Europe
Thanks for helping me find my second car.
I can't believe I didn't hear they had started offering the 2 series with AWD. I now have a very strong contender for my next car.
Once again, a great review! Love it
I love mine- best BMW I've ever had.
One of my favorites ..i love that pearl white paint too. Wish I had the money to buy one
I own a M235i, absolutely a nice car. Really looking forward to the new M2. It will be a beast.
Can confirm, it is
@@kylemontano228 lol this comment was from 5 years ago, I currently own a Tesla Model 3

5.74 at a mile high? That is real quick for a 240 bhp car! Two things, one the power is under rated, two, the car really puts the power to the ground very very well. I have driven this around a track at a BMW event. Supreme fun car it is.
and I get flamed for stating (in another of these videos) that 7.8 seconds is absolutely not "surprisingly good" for a 290bhp car and they went on and on and on about it being a mile high. Well, it doesn't seem to stop this 240hp car from hitting 5.74. Bunch of jackasses.
Perhaps some manufacturers are a trifle optimistic with their power claims, whilst BMW, on the other hand, tend to err on the conservative side.
Turbochargers rule at high altitude. A 200hp turbo will almost always be faster than a 300hp na car.
Alien Or Sutin - Was that a NA car? This is a forced induction car, bound to be faster.
MilkEnvy08 I don't understand this truism. At sea level a turbo compresses a given volume of air per second. It compresses the same amount at a mile above sea level. Therefore, if the rarefied atmosphere results in a loss of power for a given volume of air, then the turbo should suffer a loss of power, and this power loss should be, pro rata, the same as that suffered by a naturally aspirated engine.
God, that thing just looks amazing.
What a good looking and fun car. Very appealing.
Acutally you can get 39 mpg if you drive like a granny in Eco Pro XD. But I doubt anyones gonna do that.
Nice review!, now how about 235i?
I HAVE A 2016 228 I X DRIVE RAG TOP LOVE IT ! You don't need the M to love the ride
My first and only time ever driving a bmw was a used 2009 335xi. I was very pleased! I can see why people like bmws. I can't justify 32k base price for this car, though. Bmws in general are expensive. Maybe I'd buy a used one.. but for the new price, I'd rather buy a muscle car.
I totally agree with the stubby tail but I prefer it much more than the older E90 rear ends!
0-60 in 5.4 seconds doesn't sound that impressive for a *28 but considering BMW switched from a 3.0 litre-6 down to a 2.0 litre - 4... WOW, beautiful engineering !
The new 4s are faster than the old 6s...
Asher Rubinov I'm waiting for a conversion kit ;)! To think that we're paying to run an in-line 6 when all we needed was a 4!
Anything beyond the base model is overkill. I'm not driving on a race track or the 101 daily.
Is this car quite easy to drive? I want a fun sports car to enjoy, but it’s also something my girlfriend needs to be able to drive. Can it be driven sensibly or is it incredibly responsive?
Did you turn off traction control and run it. In this car traction control holds it back by a bit. It also might be to cold up there run better numbers.
That was a very good review. Nice, short, to the point
Great review and what a great car. Visually appealing as well as a great drive. Only thing that held me back was the price tag. After having test driven this car and the 2016 Camaro SS.... for the same price the Camaro won in every catagory but looks and mpg. Was a hard choice.
I usually hate BMWs but this car hit the sweet spot and I love it. Decent performance, style and luxury all in a $33k package.
And just with a couple bolts ons and tune the car gets 360 whp
+TheDustyaman wow really? how much would all those mods cost to get those numbers? I'm looking into getting one of these.
+Anc1ntkn1ght probably 2-3 grand
+TheDustyaman ah I see, Thanks! I didn't know you can modify this engine and stuff to get those kind of numbers haha.
+Anc1ntkn1ght Yah Hooniverse had dinan on their podcast. And they were claiming those numbers.
Isn't this supposed to compete with the cla250? At $44k it's veeery expensive . if i had 44k laying around i would use it as a down payment for an m4.
Are you unaware at how expensive you can option out the CLA?
Adrian B im a mb guy, but id take this over the cla anyday... dunno about the cla45 tho. that car is just so sexy
I actually wanted a cla at some point and with almost all the options sunroof nav...etc it was 38k
Adrian B That car has M Sport, which costs over 3 grands. Plus other bells and whistles, it's a 44k car. The base price is 33k.
I have this car nine months. I have it with the M track package. For me... It is an unsettling enigma of a car.
In every day driving, but on GOOD roads, the car jiggles and jitters on any Tarmac that is less than perfect. This in comfort mode which also has a varying degree of looseness in steering; firming up a bit with speed. Put sport on and the steering tightens with good heft; but the ride verges on "jumpy" again on GOOD but not perfect roads.
I suppose if you are a racer.. You will enjoy the car on open highways, however, jump it to sport and ANY imperfection on a great road will "jiggle" you for a moment. Comfort mode helps out with heftier steering as you build speed.
All in all, for an "everyday" driver, this car never "glues" you to the road. Add to that ( for me at least) the pilot tires never let you forget the road noise in "everyday" cruising. This suspension was tuned for one purpose: the track! If that is not your bag, the ride needs more "absorption" and road hugging for ANY Tarmac that is less than "PERFECT"
When is my lease up????
But you have to think again Nathan you cannot disqualify a car because is not a manual transmission, now days almost all cars that are coming out are automatic plus some of us prefer automatic over manual. Just a thought.
Blake Brink you're 100% right
I guess autos are good, if you have a vagina.
What's really great, is an automatic gearbox affords me the freedom to do my makeup in-car if I'm running a bit late for coffee with the girls. Who needs to be bothered by that silly "driving" nonsense anyway?
Blake Brink Don't forget the benefit of being easier to high heels too.
nathan adlen i thought the tfl car do their reviews for the general public (viewers) so the viewers can have an idea if they're planning on purchasing a specific car based on how the car rides, the feel, speed. Your recommendation of buy it,lease etc. I did not know that was for you. If it is then my mistake i've been subscribed for a while now ,but i guess i was looking at the wrong channel. Unsubscribed.
You can get a manual gearbox in that
>>>>> been driving one of these for three years...
not as much fun as my old 2002 tii
but comes damn close.
Was this 0-60mph test performed above 1 mile sea level?
Nope.
What is the difference from this year and the previous???
Do a infinity Q60 and 328I comparison
I've owned an Rx-8 and a Gt86, I now drive one of these(well a 230i M-sport in manual), its a great package and genuinely fast, however its not a sharp car. Throttle response is average, rev hang, awkward pedals. Super fun and I love the car, but not exactly a machine for the purist.
Hi Daniel, do you rate the GT86 as a better driver's car compared to 230? Especially for track use. Thanks!
@@panosalp the 230i is a far better car in a general sense, but the 86 is the better track car no doubt.
@@avalanx Thank you Daniel! Would you believe the 230 could be on par with GT86 with proper suspension setup? Or not (e.g. because of steering / body roll / handling)?
@@panosalp the limitations are not so much in handling as they are in terms of the electronic interference with the gearshift and the lack of a limited slip differential. You can't actually shift aggressively in the 230i and on the limit the lack of an LSD is irritatingly noticeable. It certainly is not meant for regular track use.
@@avalanx I was considering one with a manual gearbox, so the shifting could somehow be more bearable.
I understand though that even if I get an LSD on top, it is more of a touring car rather than an occasional track-day.
Which means GT86 / BRZ makes more sense. Thanks!
Yo yo!. I a fan of you guys. I watched every video.
Questions have you made a video of 2014-2015 scion xb 5 speeds because I'm in the market for 1. I tested drive a 2011 scion xb automatic is ok! US 4 Speed Auto ewww!
cant believe hid headlamp is not standard.
What track is this? If you're in Dacono, why didn't you run High Plains?
2 series is the best modern bmw
Cap
Does this car have a synthetic soundtrack, from the interior it sounds like a 6 pot?
+Revino Theron i herd that it does, but irl it sounds dope so.....
kng can u remove it tho
No it does not, only the M cars have them.
Yes it does
I wonder what altitude this was done.. Anyone know?
crabjoe 1 mile above sea level
Is this the N20 engine or the new B48?
Damn good review, thank you!
Im chanting for a BMW series 2
great review. what song is that playing?
isnt it 350nm of tourque??
Didn't you reuse this video
hesitate btw this car or my 2016 wrx... check out my 0-60mph vids.. i chose the wrx for the snow but 228i still great car
I would choose the 228 because of the fuel haha
Nice lil car.
wow this car is fun but not for nathans height. that pillar is banging his head. I test drive the a3 and sat on the cla before and has the same issue
Why no 335i
Thts the base 🤯
I'm not a big BMW fan but I kinda like the car it should have been the 35 though.
I think it would be awesome in diesel form.
This is what the 1-series should have been all along. That's the one that's really stubby and pot bellied. The 2-series actually looks pretty good. If they had done it right the first time there would be plenty of used 1-series cars that would seem like bargains by now. You can already find a nice 228i used for just over $30k. Another year or two and there will be used sub-$30k 228i and 235i all over the place.
Music?
Sooo need xenon lights..
I'm 2 meters (6'6 ft)... Will I be able to drive the car comfortably?
Exarathas
no
Yes!! Bought a 2014 228i in a 6spd, memories of a older E36 - 325i that I drove for some 300,000km with no issue!! This is the best car that BMW makes...but it is a personal car...two chimpanzee seats in back will not seat any adult.
The engine sounds like crap vs the 3.0L N52, basically this is about the same size as the E93.
My local BMW dealership is selling a certified 2012 335i coupe, with < 5k miles, asking $36k. Who'd prefer that over the 228i in this vid.?
its great to hear your friendliness man but you cant fit in the car wish someone else could drive..
beautiful x2 but it really too deal
My e46 M3 get 25 MPGs without having a plasticky interior, crappy electronics, and sounding like a 15k rice box. BMW is officially a has been.
Idiot
What is the max speed of the 228i base 2016?
+Burak Eyüboğlu 130mph base model, on paper and tested irl on my 228i. sport pkg gives more. not paying for sport pkg
kng Thank you a ton!!
restricted to 130mph in US or restricted to 155mph in Europe. with the limiter removed there are rumours it can get close to 170mph
My 2003 Honda Accord sedan can get to 60 in 5.9 so I think I'll look for an older more affordable car that's quicker than this BMW. It's ridiculous that it also weighs as much as my big sedan.
You're surprised? Quality engineering, materials, Extremely low road and interior noise. Your accord has a much larger V6 but it's all cheap plastic and not much weight because it's all shitty components
+promodelred when I installed my cold air intake I was amazed by how much useless plastic components were used for the intake. Like 20lbs worth of plastics for the air to go through. Now I just have the air go from the outside directly to the engine. Everything about my car is cheap though lol. I have an LX. So no navi, leather, other luxuries. I don't care. I was able to get the budget V6 lol
I see. If performance is your only desire, yes the 228i is not a good option, even though it is pretty quick for a luxury entry-level sports car. I'd go for a used Mustang GT or a highly boosted smaller engine car for muchhhh less than this car.
+Weapon X No it doesn't.
My phone keep doing type o's.
Yo yo. Can you guys make a video. 2014. Or 2015 scion xb. 5speeds. Because I'm in marketing for 1. " Please!"
If you can. Both. Scion xb automatic 4 speed. And 5 speeds m.t. thanks.
so this is how you buy a rwd mini.......
that sound.....
... seems fake on the inside. I guess they tried to make it sound like their inline-6s.
I'm pretty sure active sound is only on the M and M Performance cars, so this should be 100% real.
Kaisuke971
it is only on the M. I had this pointed out to me after I bought my 228i, I was complaining that the engine sounded great but the fact that it's piped through the speakers kinda killed it for me. The guy at the BMW dealership said it's only on the M.
@@tonunknown1 I know this comment is 6 years old but I just bought a 2015 228i convertible off my dad ( who did impeccable maintenance) and it's definitely fake exhaust noise. It sounds different with the top down. With the top up it sounds electronic and louder.
❄❄❄❄❄
everything is faster then u
A chubby man driving a #BMW is a Mid-Life crisis waiting to happen in North America but put a cute woman behind the wheel and Sales will nourish the Sports Automobile industry!
5.7? wtf?
I've track-timed mine around 4.8, 4.9. Stock.
Looks the same, like every other year!! You guys are whipped over BMW cars
Um the 228 dose come in manual, I just bought one
it does come in manual. but only in the RWD models. so basically, bmw won't let you purchase a manual BMW with xdrive. fuckin bullshit.
+MUH FACKS that's true
+Luis Portilla have u had any issues in snow or rain?
+MUH FACKS I just picked it up today so I can't really tell you yet
+MUH FACKS I had a chance to drive it in pretty heavy rain and its a dream to drive wet or dry
however however however
For not fat people like 90% of Americans. Just kidding .
I like car but I don't like BMW change name to MBW and is ok
The car is ugly.. and i4 sounds suck.. but fast for what it is
😒Ugly compared to what? You must be blind ,stupid a troll or all of the above. Never heard this car called ugly ever.
Comes with a turbo i6 BTW too.😟
8 year old comment, but what do you think of the looks after BMW's recent style changes.
