Disclaimer - I see that this needs to be said. I haven't used AI to design my jewellery before and I don't plan on using it in the future, all designs are my own. This video is meant for presentation and educational purposes, to show AI's capabilities and to discuss them. It does not reflect my actual process, which can be seen in all of my other videos and on my social media. I've always been transparent and honest when it comes to my work, both educational and my jewellery. Making this video is part of that transparency, as I believe many subjects are worth discussing. I don't think that pretending AI is just evil and doesn't exist is a wise way to approach this, so instead of choosing ignorance, I'm coming into this with curiosity. Hence this experiment, which I did to show you what these programs can do. And how much depends on us, THE USERS, what results we get from it. And what we do with these results in the next step. My enthusiasm is based on the fact that I find technology impressive and AI, which is developed by humans, is impressive. I'm neither loving is nor am I totally against it. Just like with electricity and the internet, when they were first introduced, this may seem scary for some and I completely understand it. However, I encourage you to be open minded and learn about these tools and solutions, to stay up to date. Simply knowing how they work doesn't make you complicit in other people's wrongdoings. I believe it's a tool, that when used correctly and mindfully will be useful and helpful. Most importantly, we need necessary REGULATIONS, for example, a way for artists to opt out of the pool from which AI gets its data to generate results. It should not use paid work of artists and creators, period. With all that being said, I hope you can enjoy today's video and have fun! Here is the missing photo of another result that I forgot to add!! imgur.com/a/xXtqwvS As you can see, AI generated a COMPLETELY different result using almost exactly the same prompt. It's stunning how different it is, isn't it? I know AI is a controversial subject, especially when it comes to art. I do believe that treating it as a tool, as a guide and a base to build upon in our work is a good approach while we wait for necessary regulations. Artists (or anyone for that matter) should be able to opt-out of their images being used by AI as data. While AI regenerates, restructures and changes elements when it builds the result based on user's prompt, it still reaches out to everything that's on the internet, including works that should be protected. While we wait for those regulations, let's be sensible and mindful about this and use AI as a tool in a thoughtful way. One being not adding any artist's name in the prompt for example :) (Edit: typos)
Girl I wish somebody would!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been here since the BEGINNING and AI GENERATED jewelry wasn't even a thing... you are 10000% transparent!!!
What a fantastic result! I love the way that your design is not simply a direct copy of one of the Midjourney images, but inspired by it. As somone who is only been practising silversmithing for a short time, and with no formal training in silversmithing techniques or jewellery design, I am really looking forward to coming up with some prompts, seeing what Midjourney suggests and then making those designs. The design element is really where I struggle, so I'm hoping that by making some pieces based on AI suggestions I can start coming up with more interesting original designs. 😄 In case you're not aware, and for anyone else interested in trying this for themselves: once ChatGPT has generated the long description of the piece using very 'ornate' language, ask a follow-up question along the lines of, "Give me the same description again, but suitable for use as a Midjourney prompt". You should get a much more condensed response that contains all the key points that Midjourney needs. Thanks for all your videos - I have found so many of them really useful, and find that I now have a lot of the same tools! 😊
This is jaw dropping! AI is hellishly contraversial as you know. However, I feel it can be used as a guide, inspiration etc, I feel it can be a great tool to creators in that sense. But yes being sensitive to how similar something may be to existing art is crucial. And not using existing creators names in prompts is vital. I've been making AI art for fun for about 2 years and as a maker, I think it's an amazing source for ideas/colour palettes etc. I do agree that it is similar to the way we create, we take inspiration from what we've seen, experienced, felt, we have accumulated a library of external data in our brains that we form ideas from. As we were told in design college - NOTHING is actually original, designs are an assemblage of existing things that looks new or different - one could argue that something is original because your brain assembled something in a way someone else may not have. Then yes sure, that is original. So I guess it depends on the person, how they feel about using AI. Either way, this video is truly incredible, we cannot deny how jaw dropping this is! And your execution is absolutely stunning. I feel two ways about AI, I feel its incredible, but also dangerous. It's already taking away jobs from many, let alone what AI will become capable of in the future. I understand why people love it, I understand why people want it gone. It's a big conversation 😅.
Very well put! I really enjoyed reading your comment. I think the keyword GUIDE is extremely important here. Of course, AI won't replace actual work and design, it should serve as a tool - one of many. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! And I'm very happy that you like the piece I've created :) I intentionally did not replicate the design AI gave me, but focused on using it as guide to make it my own. Taking inspiration of how these elements can be arranged and doing it in a way, that was different to the picture. As for AI and jobs, my hope is that it will continue being one of the tools and solutions that are available to us and that we will adapt to living in a world with AI. Just like we did with electricity, the Internet and self check-out in shops. Technology will never replace humans. Because we're too complex, skilled and versatile. And technology can't exist without humans. Someone has to develop it, fix it, run it, adapt it etc :) And I hope that AI will rather create new jobs for people, just like when technology evolves and new solutions are introduced - people get trained in new skills and new fields.
Great idea! I tried something similar with a ring but the idea it gave me didn't make any sense haha. I like the prompt you used. I'll keep playing around with it. Great job recreating what it gave you. Inspiration can come from anywhere, this can be a really good jumping-off point for designs.
Which shows that AI cannot, in fact, do what humans can 😀 It's all about the prompt and description we give it and how it then uses the data it gathers online to give us results that are as close to what we wanted as possible. I recommend having some fun with it, mostly because it's very interesting and makes you realize that we live in the future 😁 Thank you so much for watching today! And I'm happy you like the piece I made based on this design 🥰
Aaa Basia you’re so brave to do this experiment (i thought about it but it was intimidating as hell 😂) and the result turned out beautiful! Chatgpt is a weird one - i asked it like 10 times for a green or blue patina recipe that i could use on silver, and every time it would give me something that looked like the early stages of a crappy cake recipe 😂
AI can't do anything that you can. Your designs are better. I have mixed feelings about AI. As a jewelry artisan, I feel that I should be using my creativity to make my own designs, but don't we all sort of copy others' ideas at least sub-conciously?
Of course it can't! It's an artificial program after all, not a human (thank goodness haha), that's why treating it as a tool is a way to go, not as a replacement. I agree with you, the ideas we as artisans have, are also a combo of everything we've seen and learned in our lives. We are repeating themes and styles. Creativity is about coming up with new ideas, which are based on that knowledge and experimenting with new construction, layout and aesthetic. That's what makes it our own. This can't be replaced by AI, simply because it exists outside of us and our minds. That's why I only see it as a tool - it does what I tell it to do (the prompt) and then I can take whatever it gives me to mold, reshape and build upon it
stunning! I'm a machine learning scientist who work on AI-related stuff during day time, while enjoying making my own jewelry to calm myself down at night time. I'm so glad that you amazingly combined AI and your own design into a masterpiece. Watching your video is so meditating and inspiring!!!
AI just refluffed what you said (very well). In fact, AI's version was a bit of overwrought and frivolous writing. The text only platform did nothing that was creatively original. Where it got interesting is when Midjourney got involved; it created an image. Although the image is definitely based on your description, it is a very common iteration of your prompts; you'll see those pendants in a plethora of metalsmith artists' offerings. Where it is valuable - just as you said - is as an inspiration for your own unique creation. I am curious about whether or not AI is culling data from copyright free images. It would be unethical to show an image of an actual piece some artist created and posted to the internet on any platform. I'm very excited to check this out! Thank you for an excellent and fun video, Basia. 🌺🌺🌺
I loved this, I also thought the way you explained how AI works was very accurate and loved how you showed how to develop the ideas, most importantly you took the design as inspiration but made it better with your input!
Thanks so much for showing the steps in generating the prompt and then the image. I am very interested in learning how to use AI in various arenas - work, hobbies, etc. This specific example will really help me!
Omg, I was seeing in the comments people saying it was jaw dropping, and I said what is so impressive, and as I was watching your video I thought it is jaw dropping, lol, and the end result is gorgeous!!!
WOW! 🤯🤯🤯 You did such a great job on this video, and your final piece is stunning! As artists, I think we can use this technology not to copy exact replicas, but to further understand our own creativity and grow. Then Ai grows. 😳 I don't really have the right words here. I'm kinda blown away, and my mind is spinning. THANK YOU for showing me this technique!
Omg, thank you so much for your thoughtful comment! ❤️ I appreciate it a lot. And I agree with you. It's ok to use technology, but in a mindful and sensible manner, not to just copy. I think the most important thing that needs to happen is for artists to be able to prevent their designs (that aren't free or for educational purposes) from being used by AI. Thank you for watching today 💕🌸
@The Art of Metalsmithing Where will we be in 10 years with human creativity and Ai? Even 5 years? I see so much potential and yet so much harm if not harnessed properly. Very interesting times. Thank you again! 😊
Yes, THIS! It's both very exciting and slightly scary. But I must admit that I do look at it with a lot of interested and passion. I do believe that we are responsible for how it is used and we, as humans do with it. Hopefully proper regulations will be introduced so that we can use it without concerns 💕
@The Art of Metalsmithing Yes, exactly what I am thinking too. We have regulations already on copywrite and intellectual property. Maybe with Ai, we can better implement these these standards. We will see! ❤️
Wow jaw well and truly dropped. I am Pammi from the UK. (just in case you are interested in where your watcher's are from). I don't know what got me more, was it CHATGPT? AI or was it your amazing craft person's creation. I chose exactly what you chose, 😆. You are amazingly crafted in so many ways. You are an inspiration to me. What you created was nothing short of stunningly beautiful. Thankyou for the push into using up to date methods. You see every piece I create is totally my design, or so I thought, you are right it must be a collection of what I see on social media, TV and books. You see all my designs are drawn, planned and then created. Another great video.
I added the Bart a week ago but didn’t know where to start so thanks for sharing this wonderful experience. I think it’s a great way to augment our creativity. And the Midway program is the other part I didn’t know about. Now I’m going to try it. Thanks!!
Fascinating and creepy at the same time 🫣 I was born in the last century and although I try to keep up with technology I was trained as a biologist-botanist and I give great value to the human capacity to create art. I of course can’t be indifferent to the almost magical effect of AI though 😅 however, I guess that I see a future in which having created a design from scratch and without using AI, would have more value for me, I would appreciate that creation more. Like when a musician singer does it all, I appreciate that artist more than another one who has a team of 20 people creating on his/her behalf and using lyrics that another person wrote. But AI is indeed a great tool as long as it remains a tools under our control and does not take over our creative life. What a short comment right 😂 brilliant thanks Basia, as always another great video ❤😘
This video is an absolute delight. Your craftsmanship is beautiful and it was great fun watching your process. I am a 55 year old jewelry maker (beader) at the very beginning of my metalsmithing journey. I am using AI to generate ideas that will challenge my limited but growing skills. I have almost as much fun generating prompts and seeing what the various image generators create as I do creating jewelry. It's amazing how each engine has such vastly different interpretations of a given prompt, even a very simple one. I know it's controversial, but I see nothing wrong with using AI to generate ideas and even finished designs. Personally, I would not feel comfortable selling an AI-generated design as my own, but I have no qualms about someone creating from AI-design as long as it's marketed as such. (Honestly, I'm not sure I would care if I found out after the fact.) Handmade is still handmade. The images created by the AI were gorgeous, but it took a skilled artist to bring them to life.
Holy shit...from algorithms and known works!!! I'm tempted...at the same time wonder if this is cheating. Recognising that my work stems from everything I've seen before me...how can I imagine that any design I come up with is truly original. Unless perhaps arising from something experienced as a feeling...then translation becomes art. Thank you Basia, you have provoked some interesting questions. Nice work. Livio x
Thank you so much, Livio ❤️ Yes, you're on point here, very well said. This is a very interesting subject, one that has two sides and, like another person mentioned, a grey area. A lot can be fixed by allowing people to choose an option where AI cannot use our work as data. For now, it's interesting to see develop and watch its capabilities. And use as a tool and inspiration, rather than a ready made solution to replicate
The process is fascinating but the end result is 100% the artist in this case :D. Although people are debating a lot of aspects for the future of AI in our lives, the seed is there and the AI is here to stay and we will have to define its place. The legal aspects can be solved (like Adobe is doing or something similar), but in the end AI is just a tool (at least for now) like a knife, one can use it to spread the butter or use it as a weapon, in the end it depends how we will use it. This is one of those milestones that affects us globally and in my opinion we should try to understand it and collectively voice our thoughts in order to create the perfect legal frame that can serve us in the best way possible. Nice topic Basia and a very nice video as usual. I'm not sure if you saw those videos, but some people trained Chat GPT how to actually write the prompts for Midjourney. Looking forward to watching your next videos! :)
I could not have put it better, Alex! This is exactly how I feel about it. Brilliant, thank you so much for sharing your comment and your thoughts! I find AI fascinating, but as a tool. I'm neither enthusiastic nor scared, but rather interested and cautious. The regulations will be essential here, I hope they're already working on it. For now it is kind of a Wild West out there 😂 But like you said, it's here to stay. And it will be just like electricity, internet, self check-outs, electric cars and any other major technological improvements. Thanks so much for watching! 💕
This is so cool! I think its an interesting idea to help you think outside the box. 😊 Great insights about keeping your own style and remaining unique but using AI for inspiration!
This was such a fun video! I love to see artists finding inspiration from AI, not just posting it and calling it their own art. Its unfortunately difficult to find many artists using it for inspiration but hopefully more will use it this way in the future. I feel like ChatGPT was writing sales copy with its flowery description. The resulting pendant was absolutely stunning!!!
Thank you so much, Kathy! I appreciate it a lot 💕 I will make another one for sure - I'd love to discuss AI a bit more. Perhaps I should do it live, so that we can all have a chat during the stream. Hmm, that could be an interesting idea 🤔
I actually loved what AI designed for you and I could see your own design in what the AI designed for you❤❤❤ How do I get this program? I would love to give it a go…. Wow, technology is really starting to remind me of some of the sci-fi movies that I’ve been watching. And some of these AI have been kind of scary and a little freaky…. But as long as the AI program that I use stays nice and pretty and designs, me things that are beautiful, then, yes, I would be OK with AI… but no freaky stuff lol 😂
Thank you! That's very kind of you 💗 There are two programs - ChatGPT, a chat based AI, which is free to everyone, you just sign up using email address and create an account. Then there's Midjourney (there are other visiual based AI programs, but I've used this one, as I have a monthly access). This program has a free trial I believe and then it's paid. I paid $12.50 for a month. This program doesn't operate on one platform, you need to have a Discord account, on which Midjourney operates. It has instructions on how to join on the website. It's very easy :) On the contrary to ChatGPT, which is private, Midjourney is public. People are generating these images in chats, so you can see what others are making and they can see what you're making. But don't worry, it goes so fast with so many results generated in a minute, that hardly anyone has time to notice your own prompts ;) I hope this helps! The world of AI is very much worth exploring. Because like you've said - we've reached the times which humans imagined in a form of sci-fi movies and books! Though I'm not surprised. It was humans after all, who imagined these solutions and technology. Why wouldn't we reach a point of actually bringing those ideas to life? :) It was only a matter of time and I'm so excited to be alive right now to witness this!
It certainly gave you some beautiful options and what you created was stunning. Personally I sometime go through creative slumps so this may help get the creative juices flowing again. That being said, I feel with AI and 3D printers soon computers will be able to create this kind of jewellery by themselves, which I'm not sure how I feel about that!
That's a great idea! Using this as a tool to get ideas and help creativity is brilliant. And I was wondering about that too, I wondered what needs to happen for AI to be able to actually produce that piece of jewellery by itself. And I think that we don't have a reason to worry yet, because the road seems to be very long before that ever happens! Now, I'm no expert, but in my mind this is how I understand it: AI would have to be able to render that design and create a perfect 3D model by itself. Then, it would have to have access to a 3D printer. Then, there's a 3D model, which someone needs to cast. And then? It would take a very advanced machine to be able to clean, assemble and finish a design after casting. What about stone setting? Patina? Finishing techniques? It would require a whole production line... Imagine the cost haha 😂 So, what I'm getting at is that it probably won't happen. AI may be used in some parts of the process - to speed it up (for example an automatic 3D rendering could be possible, it's just another program someone has to write), but other steps still require humans. And even if there is a production line with mass produced pieces... well, is that any different to what we already have with fast fashion? It won't replace artisan and handmade art. The essential thing that needs to happen though, is regulation - where AI doesn't use all of the images to gather data without owners' permission. Damn, this is crazy, so much is happening! I will be very interested to see where this is going :)
Great video! I like how you took the result of ChatGPT and fed it into Midjourney. Of course the cynical will say "then just send it to a 3D printer" but I don't think it's that simple. While the design is generated the execution is more than copying it. Choosing the right stone is a very subjective exercise that doesn't lend itself to algorithmic analysis.
Yes! Very interesting point. I was just replying to another comment about this - to get it 3D printed, we'd need a perfect 3D render first. Now, I do think that this particular step is just a matter of time before someone writes the code and then bam, AI makes 3D rendering from imagines it generated. However, I do think that this will be it (at least for some time), because even if there's a 3D model, it still needs to be cast and then cleaned, assembled and finished... plus stone setting, adding finishing touches, like patina or frosting. I think it would require a whole production line, which no one has the money for 😁 Fast fashion is already producing cheap jewelry in mass amounts and it hasn't replaced artisan, handmade work, so I'm not too worried. This AI produced jewellery won't be an accessible solution anytime soon and can't replace handmade art :)
Yes, I didn't know that either, up until recently! And my mind was blown away when I saw this... We're actually living in times when things humans imagined in sci-fi movies and books are becoming a reality :)
Sadly, for now humans are leading in killing humans. Every single bit of technology has been used to kill. Starting with sharp bones and stones, through fire, electricity, knives, gun powder, anything and everything is being used as weapons. AI is part of technology. Humans predicted it decades ago, and now they are able to develop it, all because it is within our capabilities. Just like electricity or internet once were. Is it disgusting? In a way, yes, just like everything else. Email scams, pickpocketing, art theft that has been around for as long as art has been. In a way, AI brings nothing new that hasn't already been here, even if just as a concept. Because this is all about humans and how we use the tools we have. You can use that knife to cut your carrots or you can use it another way. How you use it is based on your ethics, knowledge, behaviour and sanity. You choose what you do with it. And in this video I choose to show AI to people, to inform and present its capabilities. Instead of staying ignorant, becasue AI is here to stay and it's better to be educated about it. We can't live in denial and pretend it's not here, because we think it's evil. It's as evil as we make it.
I've used ChatGPT (which is completely free) for text and Midjourney (free trial and then several dollars per month, can cancel anytime) for visuals. This was just one example of how these programs can be used, but there's a plethora of uses! You can ask ChatGPT to give you a recipe for muffins or ask Midjourney for a colouring page for children.
Thank you for the education. I had heard of something like this being done but I didn't understand the details involved. As you said, it's a tool, an amazing inspiration generator that needs to be regulated ongoing as it develops to minimize misuse and abuse. I would personally like to learn to use it to help solve creative problems. Sometimes I envision making something I can't execute due to shortcomings in materials or their nature and although failures are part of learning and skill development, it would be nice to have AI to use as a last resort to complete a project and move on. I love the piece you made from this experiment and would love to see more.
Wow 😮 I can’t get over the midjourney imagery, incredible! Not as impressive as your finished design of course but what an inspiration it can be! Thank you for this insight 💕
OMG, I DID FORGET!! Goodness, I've watched it so many times, while editing and then after it was finished and I still missed this. I will upload the photo and then share it in the pinned comment soon :) Check back later on to see the other result! And thank you for pointing it out!
@@MadMorti yay! I will share these images on there too in the next couple of days 😀 Make sure you follow me on The Art of Metalsmithing, that's where I will be sharing it 💕
The pendant looks great! I let Dall-e 2 generate some silver jewelry for me just out of curiosity last year. The results were good already back then, but AI is improving at an exponential rate. However, I never used the designs to create any actual jewelry. I might give it a spin again sometime. I agree that AI is best used as inspiration and to get ideas!
Thank you! :) They are handmade by Mark, @makermook3 on Instagram, I recommend him A LOT! :) Just drop him a message on IG and ask about having them custom made, I'm sure he'll share all info with you
Fantastic renderings have been painted where the artist relied on photos to produce their art. It’s all fair game as the AI is just another tool in the box. Great idea to get to another level in one’s designs.
What a interesting video, a stunning idea for a project. It was so interesting to see and then see what it gave you in the end visually. As a tool it’s interesting in this context, a way to feed a verbal idea into a visual aid to start the creative process. Handy tool for when you know what you want but you just can’t get it out of your head into paper so to speak, it could drive as a starting point. Fascinating. 😊
Wow! I am speechless really! I can not imagine whats coming up next 😅 this will save so much time for some, but for me I’d rather bite my nails while thinking for new ideas myself 😃
Of course! I think so too. As someone else said in the comments, I think this can be a great way to get oneself from a creative slump, to get those creative juices flowing when there's that helpless feeling of hitting a wall. As long as this is used a tool, as a guide and as a reference, not as something to replicate and ditch the entire designing process. I've had a lot of fun with it, but I enjoy the designing part too much to swap it with it 🥰 And it can never provide us with what's actually in out heads
I looked into the A.I that you listed but I didn’t understand it. Will you please give me the information that you used on this video? Even if it cost money to use the A.I. app. Hugs 🤗 Autumn Michelle
I’m curious, is Gleaming Silver more like Sterling, or Fine Silver? 😂 (ps I’ve also managed to get one inlay ring finished at my parents kitchen table!) Edit: oh my, the final product is so wonderful! Now I’m even more ready to get back to the bench! 😂
That is a very good question! What if it's Argentium?? How are we supposed to know, ugh, this all-knowing AI ain't so smart after all. 😂 Well done completing your inlay ring!! I'd love to see it, if you want, you can DM me a photo on my Instagram @artofmetalsmithing I'm waiting for some supplies and I will be learning making an inlay ring too, can't wait! :))
until it breaks down and someone will have to fix it haha 😂 It's imperfect and I'm sure it will stay imperfect, even when it's improved by humans. In the end, it can't replace us nor will it be able to run by itself... Or that's what I hope at least!
Hiya Basia, An interesting and thought-provoking video; thank you. Having watched, enjoyed, and been taught by your videos since you started, I'm treating this as yet another example of you using a new tool to help you in your process. Can I see you using this a lot, or even again? No, this does not allow the imagination I've grown to love following full free reign to imagine your designs as you usually do. The designs were stunning but not unique enough to be used by most jewellers. AI uses too many similar images to create that the designs can be seen before they are designed. Did that make sense? I could see where it was going. Design is where I have always fallen short of my own expectations, but would I use AI to help me? I don't yet know. I think I want to see the regulation of 'owned' images controlled before I do. Plus, when I come up with a design, I'm so happy my poor little brain runs riot in seeing offshoots from it. That gives me immense satisfaction. So while that still happens, I'll leave the AI alone. Stay safe, Steve xx
This is funny. I asked chatgpt to help me come up with a collection based on something I already made (and I described it). What it came up with was really great
AAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS VIDEO!!!!! HOW AWESOME!! THIS IS AN AWESOME TOOL FOR THOSE BLOCKED DAYS!!!!!!🎉🎉🎉 THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Thank you so much, sweetheart! ❤️ I'm very happy you enjoyed it! I do think it can be a very beneficial tool that helps with the slump when used properly and thoughtfully ❤️
Now that we know how to easily copy your work, what if other jewellers rip off your brand and sell it cheaper? Won't you have to lower your prices? Are you OK with this?
Anyone can copy my work if they want to, with or without AI. The only thing that prevents them from doing so are their morals and work ethic. We've seen it many times, other makers just blatantly copying or, in some cases, beginner artists being so inspired by someone, that they subconsciously copy their work and style. And those copies are usually 1:1. I know what you mean here, that pieces of my work may be intertwined in the result AI provides. And in that case the important thing that needs to happen are regulations, which I mentioned in the video description. Just like with other programs, AI needs to be prevented from using content that is a paid property of artists and content creators. And people themselves need to know how to use AI and to not use a particular artist's name in the prompt, because that's a blatant attempt at copying someone too. To directly answer your question though, no, I'm not worried. Because I tried this program (instead of approaching it with a medieval mindset of believing it's this evil that will ruin us all and that it's best to pretend it's not there) and I experimented with it to see its capabilities. And I can see that, as a jeweler, 1. AI cannot replicate my design. 2. It doesn't give a result that is based on a particular work by itself. It molds, reshapes and interprets the data to build something new. 3. If a design has similarities to my work, someone will not be able to make it in a way I make it, in my style, using my techniques and everything that makes it my own. They don't know my secrets :) So it boils down to this: you can go and make a Koi fish pendant right now just like mine, even without AI. But it won't look like mine. Because the design is one thing and execution is another. I think the case is much more difficult for 2D artists, because AI is much better at mimicking different styles of paintings and graphics. But then again, DON'T use artist's name in the prompt, you do have some control over this. Don't try to replicate a certain look using AI. If people actually try this program and learn how it operates, they will have a better understanding. That's why I made this video, to inform people about this and entertain while I do so
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I completely agree about regulations being needed ASAP. You are very trusting in people's morals and work ethic, but after more than 30 years working as a professional jewellery artist and having some of my designs copied along the way, I am sadly not so sanguine. It is admirable that you don't mind plagiarism of your ideas. Most people seem to get upset about it. I don't think AI is evil, the trouble is how it gets used by unscrupulous people. I try to keep an open mind, so I can appreciate your intentions with this video. I think you are quite brave because to me there are too many risks involved with using AI for designing, and then making a public video about it. And after all the hard work you did to establish your brand, it would be regrettable if it were to be negatively impacted by this video in the future. Because it is such a double-edged sword, I guess if it were me I would experiment with the AI technology and keep it secret!!! But I understand that you want to attract RUclips followers so you made this video. To be honest though, your video convinced me NOT to meddle with AI in my designs, for the reasons mentioned above and many other concerns too numerous for this comment! To each their own. Wishing you all the best!
I appreciate your response a lot and this is exactly the type of conversation I was hoping to spark, thank you. I think I should add a disclaimer that this was a one-off project and not how I design my jewelry. I'm very transparent with my process, on social media and on RUclips, I've always been. Making this video was part of that transparency, because I'm not showing people, hey, this is how my designs are actually made, not by me. But rather discussing something that's a huge subject right now and affects us all. I'm neither enthusiastic about it nor completely against it. It's technology after all. And it's here to stay. So we might as well get educated and know what it entails, how it works and how it needs to be regulated. I understand getting emotional, but we need to have a more curious, inquisitive and pragmatic approach. I also wanted to add that I don't want my designs to be replicated by anyone, that's not what I meant. I don't want them copied. But I understand that someone will see my Manta Ray or Koi Fish design and will be inspired to create their own design of this element. I don't own Koi fish as an element, I own the style in which I created my design and jewelry, the aesthetic and overall composition of elements within that style. And that's what shouldn't be copied by anyone, ever. That's also what I meant by saying that I'm not worried about someone copying my design using AI - that's because it's impossible to do. Even if someone is intentionally asking AI to provide them with a design of something in my specific style, AI won't do exactly that and this person won't be able to replicate it, because they don't know HOW it's made. And also, hopefully they understand that doing this intentionally is a theft. AI is a tool. What we do with it is within our control, the responsibility is ours. My hope is, that people will understand this video, as an introduction, a discussion and a presentation of one of the modern tools. And the reason I'm impressed with it is not because "I can steal now! Yay!", but because this is a groundbreaking technology whether we like it or not, and we're witnessing something incredible happen. And this video is also not me saying hey, btw, THIS is how I make my jewelry, despite years of content I put out before, where I showed exactly how I create my artisan work. Use this ONE video to make an entire assumption about me! I do trust people are a bit smarter than that :)
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Your disclaimer is excellent (just read) because I for one got a strong impression that you were extremely excited by what the AI could do and would be using it often in the future. I have seen some of your other videos but this one made me wonder if all your previous designs are 100% your own! You can say all you want, but these days there are so many lies online, so we often can’t tell what’s true any more. Living in Japan, I’m glad you don’t claim Koi fish as your personal motif!! Yes, I agree that your designs “shouldn't be copied by anyone, ever”, and I never accused you of being happy to be able to copy others thanks to this AI program. You can control yourself because you are obviously a person of integrity. But the last time I checked, we can’t control what others do, can we? I will pray that only morally correct people will see your video! I also question whether another “person won't be able to replicate it, because they don't know HOW it's made”. I don’t know about you, but I have seen many, many videos on social media of jewellers with super-hero technical skills. They don’t need to know your secrets. They would be able to make your AI generated image with even more technical perfection than you, and then what if they sell it at a lower price? You may feel that such super-jewellers wouldn’t bother imitating your brand but when it comes to money, if they see your stuff is selling well, they might target it. Believe me, I have seen this happen more and more in recent months with jewellery and many other products. Finally, I have another question. It was my understanding that such AI programs are built on algorithms that are based not only on data potentially from you but also from other jewellers and designers etc. So of course, these are not 100% original designs generated by the AI. In other words, the AI will be producing designs based on previous input by others. Isn’t there a danger of people who use the AI to design having similar work to each other in the end? (I don’t mean tomorrow but maybe by next year?)
I have one teacher who is bounds above the rest and refuses to use any digital tools except for a camera to capture the work when it's done. I imagine they have the same opinion on AI. They said they've noticed a distinct drop in skill over the years due to a few reinvented tools. They wouldn't be anymore direct than that when I asked though. Myself, well I am wondering how honest jewellers like yourself who make their own designs are going to compete with the one's that end up using this process exclusively. Especially after seeing the images it produced and the piece you chose to make. That's some tough competition.
i like the chatgbt for words really trigger my imagination rather than pics with jewellery. i have no problem with the up and coming technology it is the way of things ~ future
You said "I haven't used AI to design my jewellery before and I don't plan on using it in the future" WHY? This is the problem with AI, once you see the possibility, it doesn't make sense to go back. The genie is out of the bottle, and yourself was amazed by the result Midjourney gave you. If one day you're out of inspiration, you'll always be tempted. (But you're right, sometimes MJ just copies stuff, be careful)
When confronted with the claim that half the artistry is lost when a machine designs your work, while the person making the argument themselves incorporates elements created by nature into their own creative process, you can respond with the following points: Embracing tools and mediums: Just as artists use materials and mediums provided by nature, such as paint, canvas, or natural pigments, machines can be viewed as additional tools and mediums in the creative process. They expand the range of possibilities and offer new avenues for artistic expression, without necessarily diminishing the artistry involved. Evolution of artistic techniques: Throughout history, artists have constantly adopted new tools and techniques to enhance their work. From the invention of the paintbrush to the advent of photography, these advancements have not detracted from the artistry but have instead propelled artistic innovation. Similarly, machines can be seen as a progression in artistic tools and techniques, allowing for novel forms of expression. Personal interpretation and intention: Regardless of the tools or mediums used, the artistry lies in the artist's interpretation and intention. Even if a machine generates certain elements of a work, it is the artist who selects, arranges, and imbues them with meaning. The artist's unique perspective, creativity, and ability to evoke emotions are what define the art, regardless of the involvement of machines. Collaboration with nature and technology: Just as artists work in collaboration with nature by utilizing its materials, artists can also collaborate with technology and machines. Incorporating technological elements into their art can be a way to explore the intersection of nature and artificiality, creating thought-provoking and innovative pieces that bridge different realms of creativity. Art as a reflection of society: Art has always been influenced by the tools, technologies, and cultural context of its time. In an era where technology plays a significant role in our lives, incorporating machines into the artistic process can be a way to reflect and engage with the contemporary world, addressing themes of automation, human-machine interaction, or the fusion of digital and physical realms. By emphasizing the artist's interpretation, intention, and the evolution of artistic practices, you can convey that the involvement of machines does not diminish the artistry but rather offers new possibilities for creative expression in harmony with the natural elements used by the person making the argument.
Yes the designs are beautiful BUT AI is trained to render designs based on already existing work, often (almost always) without the artist’s consent. Many artists are seeking legal action against this. While this can be a fun experience, personally I would prefer to stay away from AI, ethically it’s an extremely grey area.
Absolutely, that's why an option for artists to opt-out of having their designs included in the pool AI gathers its data from is necessary. AI should only use the content that was meant to be free and intended for education purposes. It should not use photos of products intended for purchase and artists' galleries. The only thing that doesn't make it a blatant theft and copy is when AI mixes EVERYTHING, every style, every element beyond recognition. And builds it from a scratch, reshapes and regenerates based on its algorithm (that predicts the next logical element, which will fit the overall design). It mimics the way, we, as humans, regenerate ideas based on inspirations and styles. Like you said, it's a grey area and the only way for it to be ethical and sustainable is for AI to not use images it was told not to use, there needs to be this option
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing until data generated images become ethical, responsible artists should NOT be perpetuating the use of a program entirely built off stolen artwork. And yes, there are have been many examples of theft from well known artists now. I'm incredibly disappointed by your support of using it despite the changes you've made, and I hope it's just a misunderstanding on your part. I honestly feel ill watching this video... You seem to not understand how horrible this technology has been for many artists, and maybe it's because you make jewelry that you haven't noticed the effects of it as much as 2D artists have. I hope you continue to make designs from your own mind and please stop showing ai generators in a positive light.
@@KatieCroonenberghs I'm not sure if you've seen my comment above or the final thoughts I've shared in the video, but my point is that this is a tool that has to be used carefully and thoughtfully. As a base and as a guide, not as a final product. And regulations are absolutely necessary, because internet is filled with all kinds of content, one that's mean to be free and educational and one that belongs to an owner and is not meant to be replicated. Unfortunately, right now AI uses both, but it should only use the former. And that's what we have to keep in mind when using these programs. Also, just like with everything else, AI doesn't make a thief - a thief makes a thief. People steal artworks without AI, so it really boils down to how WE use it - to replicate or as another creative tool on which we create our work ourselves. I believe that showing this in a positive and curious light doesn't automatically make people want to go and "steal". It's like blaming someone for promoting Pinterest, because lots of people treat it as a catalogue with "free" designs to use, while it's not. I'm showing and discussing what's already out there, people have their own brains and can think for themselves. This video was meant to start a discussion and to show capabilities of AI programs when it comes to jewelry design. I'm sorry you felt ill watching it and misunderstood what I was trying to share.
@@KatieCroonenberghs you’re right that it’s ethically questionable and your frustrations are entirely valid. But don’t take it out on the sweet maker; I think what she’s showing is interesting, also valid, and has high social value. Capitalism as a whole is basically theft; the profits from huge corporations are an extraction of the talents and efforts of other human beings. Many products that we use did not come from a 100% ethical source. One powerful example of theft that benefited society is that of Henrietta Lacks, and the immortal cell line derived from her stolen cancer cells that’s been integral in development of innovative medicines and is still used in research today. Apple, Amazon, PBMs….there are many examples of bad intermingling with good at the same time. I am not saying the end justifies the means; just highlighting that if one looks at thefts across the board, often you will find a common thread: (1) theft of idea, resource, time, human labor, etc …leading to (2) creation of social value that often (not always) also comes with (3) creation of waste….and (4) creation of profit (often concentrated among select few). So it sucks they stole artists’ pictures, didn’t pay them, and now they’re selling a product and making profit from it. And yet, if the tool is used by other artists now and helps them to be more efficient and make a living for themselves and be free from salving away doing alienating office work or just brings someone genuine joy…is the technology okay then? The common thread of capitalism that I outlined…weaves through each and everyone of us as we contend with important ethical questions; but I think there are levels of severity and while I personally am not impressed with AI art as much as some might be… I feel more I’ll wondering if I’m ever purchasing thing made possible through exploitative/dangerous labor; I try not to…but that kind of info is just not always available as one obviously would try to hide it. So…. I’m trying to be conversational and not antagonistic to point out its very possible for you both to be right and valid in your efforts in different ways because life is really complicated. But as I personally see it for now, I think these technologies are showing us some cracks in our conceptualization of ownership of ideas in general and they’re opportunities to philosophize about consciousness and ownership; whether a framework seeking to own ideas, which leads to theft of ideas, is the only framework available to organize society. (Sorry Basia….you’re prob like wow…I just wanted to show you a call a thing I thought was cool …Lol…anyway good job …I like your version of it better cause it looks human made ;) )
AI designed art fraud. It is not your heart it’s not your beautiful interpretation of the things you love.. Your skills are amazing and design ideas are truely magical. but they have now turned into skills. I am one of those people who have a hard line with the ARTIFICIAL intelligence. This tool is not a safe innocent tool it is being made out to be. I am no longer wowed by your gorgeous work as I now don’t know who’s work it is a combination of. I do not support AI plagiarism I will always be wowed by your workmanship, and your fabulous craftsmanship, that will no longer needed very soon. And we will be able to buy pieces created totally by AI. Can I now trust you with your designs? You art and creativity is what has had me subscribed to you. Very sad day for me. 🥺😢 unsubscribing.
I'm very sad this has prompted you to unsubscribe. The video was meant as a discussion starter, as a presentation and to explore what this new technology is. It's not created by me nor have I ever given any impression that I use it personally to create my work. I thought I made it clear that this in an experiment, a challenge to present its capabilities to then discuss it. I even explained my thoughts on this and added a further explanation in the description and comments. It made me very sad that touching on this one subject was enough to disregard years of my work, both educational here on RUclips and my craft, and for you to longer like my work by assuming I may have used AI to create it. I never replicated AI generated art in my jewellery, which I thought was clear from how I always presented my work, shared my process, my designs, techniques I used and snippets from the behind the scenes. I've always been transparent and generous with everything I shared. This video was meant to be a part of that transparency. Wouldn't I want to keep it for myself if I were using it to my benefit? Anyway. This was very harsh, Suzie, but I understand. I wish you all the best.
I'm very sorry you've misunderstood the whole reason for this film. An experiment in using a tool to help in a 'one off' way is not going to change the work Basia has done and will do going into the future. Please go through all of the comments and replies, as I have done, for a more balanced view of the whole process; rather than throw away all that this channel stands for. I own several pieces of Basia's work and am very proud to do so and to wear them. Stay safe, Steve...
One being not adding any artist's name in the prompt for example :)
(Edit: typos)
You are very wise in this discussion and explained it very well. As in many things; there is good and bad. It all depends on how it is used.
I recommend having some fun with it, mostly because it's very interesting and makes you realize that we live in the future 😁
Thank you so much for watching today!
Using AI as a basis generated idea for your own design is a great idea. As long as you interpret your own ideas. The pendent looks stunning.
Yes, yes!! I completely agree. Not replication - but interpretation and using this as a guide. Thank you so much for watching!
I'm very happy to hear that and I hope you will have a lot of fun with this. It can be a very useful tool :) Good luck! And thank you for watching
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing OH, btw, that necklace you are wearing is GORGEOUS 😍
Thanks!!
Thank you so much, Lori! Glad you enjoyed it and was inspired by it, have fun with these programs and discovering what they can do for you :)
Wow wow Wow ! That is crazy ! Im going to need to give that a try ! I loved your pendant btw.
Right?? It was such an interesting experiment. I felt like I travelled to the future haha 😀
Have fun trying it out!
If someone just copy the design and make a jewelry pieces, we call them Metalsmith, but not artists.
OMG this was a great video!! really enjoyed it.
May I ask you what tool did you use to engrave the leaf veins? how do I look up for it?
I'm very happy you enjoyed it, Cecii! Thank you :) I used a little burr attachment for my rotary tool. This one was a bearing cutter I believe
Wow, this is amazing! I like the idea to use it as a first creative step and to get a new input with a twist for a design.
That's how I also see it. Probably the best approach, to keep it ethical and original. Thank you so much for watching! :)
Please make more videos like this. I loved this 😍
Magnificent! I need to try this. Well done!
Kent
Thank you so much!
Thanks this is inspiring in a Whole New Way!!! Yes, do another video please 👍🤗
Oh that’s really cool, I’m going to give that a go, thank you 🙏
You totally should! It's so much fun! I enjoyed it a lot :) Thank you so much for watching!
Kool! I would love to know the prompts needed to use on midjoerney to play with it.
WOW WOW WOW!!! You HAVE to sell this!! You are so talented 💞
It is amazing how the piece turned out. Didn’t know I could do this with the AI systems. Good to know!
Yes, I didn't know that either, up until recently! And my mind was blown away when I saw this... We're actually living in times when things humans imagined in sci-fi movies and books are becoming a reality :)
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Correct and killing humans are a part of it. Not amazing disgusting.
Thank you for sharing such an interesting video. Fancy "flowery language" seems to be standard in the results. I definitly want to play with this now.
Thank you for watching! I appreciate it a lot. Have fun trying it out!
Your piece came out gorgeous!
Absolutely Stunning!
O mamusiu! To jest fantastyczne! Ale i tak, żadne AI nie sprawi, że praca człowieka będzie piękna. Masz ogromny talent!
I'm SO curious! What's the name of this program? It's only AI? I want try too!😮😊
I've used ChatGPT (which is completely free) for text and Midjourney (free trial and then several dollars per month, can cancel anytime) for visuals.
Brilliant! AI has its place but there’s so many risks….
Such a shame though - did you forget to put the first attempt image on the video?
OMG, I DID FORGET!! Goodness, I've watched it so many times, while editing and then after it was finished and I still missed this. I will upload the photo and then share it in the pinned comment soon :) Check back later on to see the other result! And thank you for pointing it out!
Awesome - have you got Instagram you can share it on as well?
Don’t worry - I found your IG! 😁👍🏻
WOW. I am definitely going to try this!
Hi, love your videos! May I ask where you purchased the stamps you used on the leaves , please? Thank you
Thank you! :) They are handmade by Mark, @makermook3 on Instagram, I recommend him A LOT! :) Just drop him a message on IG and ask about having them custom made, I'm sure he'll share all info with you
Wow I love your design that is gorgeous I wish I was as good as you well done ❤
You will be just as good! Keep practicing and I'm sure you'll get very good at this! :) Thank you so much, Christina
Midjourney wont let me use that /imagine prompt as a free user. Do you pay?
I’m so impressed! Very very cool. It’s new and cool, and only happened because you had the skill to craft it
It turned out so well! And I think it will help me figure a way to do something that I want to do but can’t actually get it out on paper
😂 (ps I’ve also managed to get one inlay ring finished at my parents kitchen table!)
Edit: oh my, the final product is so wonderful! Now I’m even more ready to get back to the bench! 😂
That is a very good question! What if it's Argentium?? How are we supposed to know, ugh, this all-knowing AI ain't so smart after all. 😂
Well done completing your inlay ring!! I'd love to see it, if you want, you can DM me a photo on my Instagram @artofmetalsmithing I'm waiting for some supplies and I will be learning making an inlay ring too, can't wait! :))
Amazing!
Thank you, Mary! I'm so happy you like it :)
Jawdropping indeed, BUT, I feel AI are making Human being less creative and more lazy with time.
until it breaks down and someone will have to fix it haha 😂 It's imperfect and I'm sure it will stay imperfect, even when it's improved by humans. In the end, it can't replace us nor will it be able to run by itself... Or that's what I hope at least!
@@TheArtOfMetalsmithing Me too! Hahaha (Terminator and Matrix are coming closer 😂😂)
Very inspiring video!! Thank you soooooo much for sharing!!! 😊❤
Hiya Basia,
An interesting and thought-provoking video; thank you.
Very interesting. Thanks for showing this Basia.
I love it!!
I'm very happy you do! Thank you 💕
It looks really pretty! My opinion is that I miss the soul I usually see in your own jewelry. It is pretty but like yours better ❤️

Your work is beautiful. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
Invest in a resin printer, learn the basics of 3d software, ask IA to create 3d files from your design, print it and casting it! Voi lá!
They don't know my secrets :)
So it boils down to this: you can go and make a Koi fish pendant right now just like mine, even without AI.
I don't see what the drama about AI is, I search the internet for jewellery ideas all time.
i don't either. The drama though, is that almost everybody wants or has a video about AI in their channel, because its a popular subject... these days
Lots of work 4 u 2 do now
if a machine designs your work, half the artistry is gone.
When confronted with the claim that half the artistry is lost when a machine designs your work, while the person making the argument themselves incorporates elements created by nature into their own creative process, you can respond with the following points:
Embracing tools and mediums: Just as artists use materials and mediums provided by nature, such as paint, canvas, or natural pigments, machines can be viewed as additional tools and mediums in the creative process.
@@jannowak6260 you are spot on. Thank you for sharing with us...
Stay safe, Steve.
@@KatieCroonenberghs Why are you trying to bully her by saying you’re disappointed in her?
(Sorry Basia….you’re prob like wow…I just wanted to show you a call a thing I thought was cool …Lol…anyway good job …I like your version of it better cause it looks human made ;) )
gOOd
not AI!
While impressive, I prefer your own designs.
Thank you, Jane! I'm very happy that you like them ❤️
AI designed art fraud.
