- One highlight of this show is Groucho singing a duet with Frankie Avalon of "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", getting in a few more impromptu dance moves before the series wraps up.
But for die-hard Marx Bros fans, the real highlight is in round two: a brief glimpse of Harry Ruby, one of the key writers of the Marx Bros movies in their heyday, and a lifelong friend of Groucho's. He doesn't get to say a whole hellof a lot, but it's nice to see him anyway.

I’m 78 and watched Groucho as a young boy. The fifties were a wonderful time. You can see how polite the guests were then. It’s a totally different world now.
Frankie was so sweet and adorable. So was the young lady. Lovely segment.

Who wouldn't! People had class and we're better than now Period!!!!!!
You would not know the weekends, it would seem like all the business routes would close down, very light traffic even gas stations would be closed.
50s businesses closed at 5 by 5.15 downtown was empty friday nite was date nite housewives bathed did hair was dressed by 5 husband got home bathed. And took wife. And kids tothe bjue theater which meant u watched movie drank cocoa cola ate popcorn hotdogs and Jr mints. U watched John Wayne shoot Indians. And kiss pretty women. Then in the 60s every one was taking there clothes off because it was art never would a man be with another man on screen. And women were buxom then 70s hit x xx xxx became popular by 80s men were wedding each other and women were too. In between all this disrobeing u fought civil war ww1ww11 Vietnam and Martin Luther King then blacks could mix on screen. We had all black movies roots became and Alex Haley became household word mom's and dads quit setting limits for kids. And thoes kids found rock and roll and pot
U think country improved not. Censorship. Actually kept things clean we weren't exposed to filth so we all strived to be our best. With cell phones u can look at naked pussy all day long do we have to watch it on tv too

You can never tell a persons character from TV appearances... If you had a tv camera on you and knew there would be thousands of people watching... would you be arrogant? Manners and character are two different things.
@@brett6905 Have you ever watched some of the contestants on American Idol before they have even made it to the top 12? Talk about arrogance. One of the judges even commented that some of them are already cocky and act like the show wouldn't exist without them. Frankie comes from a different time. Manners were more in fashion than now.
@@annchovey2089 Sure we can agree manners in public were more fashionable. People knew in order to be on TV back then they had to have a certain image and behave a certain way.. The culture has always been manipulated by the money-printing class to benefit themselves. The American Idol contestants although I have not seen the show in a good 10 years, would never have made it to air back then. Today that behavior is more celebrated... I would say they are probably more obnoxious to get on TV these days...
No matter what kind of person you truly are most people have different personas in different places. Celebrities today have allot riding on their public image whether its clean-cut, badboy, whatever. We never see the real person, just a carefully crafted image.
I will give you an example... Pretty much all of Frankies laughter in this video is social/polite/fake laughter. I would bet a hundred bucks he did not find any of it funny, because the genuine laugh muscles around the eyes did not tense up once. It's a physiological trait we all have when we are genuinely laughing. I could point out several things in Frankies body language that tell me his is not being authentic. Thats normal but I would never make claims about his character based on a TV appearance.

That really does come across in this. He used his energy for the benefit of the music, and less for his own personal uplift. And this duo with Groucho - that is priceless!

@@Phthalo I had a music student who, even in thr 3rd grade, had that kind of natural beauty and charm. So much is because of her eyes and her smile, how they work together and communicate what is in her heart. Delightful and beautiful.
Much of her beauty was in her humility and ability to show embarrassment. I'm sure she was blushing altho the camera couldn't capture it.

What a great sport Joyce DeHart is between two major stars. A delightful young guest. And hey, Avalon was pretty good with the song too.
So I was on a night flight back from Hawaii and FA sat at the window next to me. We said nothing to each other, both sleeping most of the flight. Arrived LA after daylight and he opened the window shade and there was an island in view. He got a little excited and said: "Hey, what is that?" I said... "Catalina Island... maybe you have heard of AVALON Bay?" I got a strange laugh from him. That was our only exchange.
Groucho sure got the best timing in jokes, singing and dancing. Watching this made my day !!! Thanks!!

he could. He was not some pretty face an agent picked up and made into a 'singing sensation'.
Look at the modesty, the shyness, the politeness, the manners, the style, the persona, the kindness, the articulation, and the self confidence of the 1950s youth = gone with the wind.

Yup; notice how she picked up on selling Frankie's mom's braciole recipe; it's a delicious dish (and so was Frankie, lol).
I don't know how many people are familiar with it, and it isn't talked about much, but around this time, Frankie Avalon was in a killer Ray Milland film called "Panic in Year Zero," where he plays Milland's son, and with Mom and sister, are on the road going on a camping trip, when California/Los Angeles is hit with nukes. A chilling movie, and Frankie does a good job in it with Milland.
This episode is properly #11.35. Yes, the decorum of Frankie Avalon and Joyce De Hart takes us back to a time before the destruction of the family, modesty and charm. How grateful I am to be a part of that generation.

My uncle Pat worked for Universal for decades, he knew them all including Ricky Nelson, good guy, David Jansen [star of The Fugitive] Frankie Avalon another real nice guy, I think he has 6 kids. My uncle was on this show twice.

He was referring to the cultural and social changes he had seen over his lifetime.

I'd prefer to review these old shows than most things that pass for entertainment today.

The sixties were a first big step in the nightmare we’re wading through today. That’s not to say Groucho grew up in times that were that much better, but at least people had a little more common sense in the early twentieth century. Groucho did lose a lot of money in the stock market scams that led up to the crash of 29, after all.

Joyce Dehart is very gracious while being continuously more or less insulted by all the interruptions based on the way she looks. She shows tremendous self confidence and capability. This was the world for women in the U.S. as recently as the 1960s...

Never have I seen a series with so many beautiful girls with amazing personalities, like the first incredible young lady!!! She must have had men lined up around the block trying to ask her out. Wish I’d been one of them!

I still have Eddie Fishers record of it. My son who was not originally born in Philly, But lived there for several years, got his first Grammy for producing the record "You Got Me", for the Roots, featuring Erika Badu, out of Phiily. And a couple of other hits made in Philly. I should have watched this show more when i was a kid.

A Dilettante Presumptuous Theorem: Singers back then such as Frankie (now 80 years old in 2019) could be asked to sing on the spot without practising, without a recording studio and without their own particular musicians. Remarkable and outstanding.

These Groucho video's are very addicting to visit, he is really hilarious, I was a kid when I first saw this on tv, but I realize the bulk of it went right over my head.
Lovely Joyce DeHart is the spitting image of 1950-era Peggy Dow.
My favorite moments were every time Groucho called the young woman pretty, she reminded his that she is intelligent and ambitious.
Frankie Avalon, God bless him. Here he's around 20 years of age. Today a belated happy birthday he is now 82 years of age. I didn't know his birthday until I saw it listed below this message. Other singers in this category are Connie Francis and Fabian just to name a few. Actually that's all I can think of that are alive today.
This is great. Nice to see, I watched two episodes already, this guy knows how to entertain. He makes fun of Frankie Avalon and the announcer, hilarious. Famous people back then seemed more humble, same ego though. “is it an airplane picture?”... “glug, glug, glug”...

wow. Respectful, courteous, manners and modest. What the heck has happened to youth today? Dang!! When talking about money, Frankie shows respect and no hidden faces or arrogance. Even at this age, Frankie was probably a millionaire already. It's true. We're going downhill. Gone downhill? Yep! He can sing. Someone puts their arm around a female like that today, without "written" authorization, will find himself in a courtroom and/or writing a big check.

Hollywood has always attracted the same type of people. Narcissists, substance abusers, sexual deviancy, etc... But at this time in American history that image was not allowed on the television. Wholesome behavior was profitable and desirable by the big corporations.

+Crispin Cain I showed the Frankie Avalon segment to my classes not long ago, but because of the girl in Junior Achievement, since I was trying to interest them in JA as a place to get work experience. Naturally, they didn't know who Frankie Avalon is, and the reaction to the show was mixed, but some of the kids seemed to be having a good time watching and laughing at Groucho. If only this generation would discover shows like this they'd discover what real talent (like Groucho) is and how it's possible for a show to be both funny and family-friendly.

Yes,this show aired in 1961,just shortly before American morals started to crumble. Frankie and Miss De Hart did show much class and poise,especially for a beautiful young woman and a great young singer. I sing this song as an amateur singer (age 51) ,and I learned it by watching this video. Does anybody know if Joyce De Hart is still living? Funny when watching Frank on here at the beginning of this episode, first thing that popped in my head was "Venus" and that movie "Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea" (both charmingly romantic songs) and his voice singing away those two hits, and afterwards the girl mention "Venus" as her favorite and Frank stated his current project of being in "Voyage to the...". Ha ha. I'm like "Well, what do you know! How 'bout that:)" ha ha.
