you can, kinda. kudoka's often don't even bother dodging or slipping between punches and kicks due the glass helmet. combat sambo fighters are kind of mediocre at striking as it's grappling is the main focus. sanda fighters don't really use elbows, knees and clinching is often prohibited.

@SalahuddinAyyubi-tu1pu BUT throw any of those guys into a parking lot where some average @$$hole tries to light them up and I like their odds no matter where the fight goes. Standing, grappling, throws/ ground game.

Thanks for doing a breakdown of Kudo. I’ve been a practitioner of this art for over 20 years and I agree with most of what you say.
I often hear people who haven’t done Kudo talk about how poor the punch defense is. And while that may be true for some practitioners, the higher level guys have very good punch defense. What people don’t understand is the added size of the helmet makes the head a bigger, easier target to hit, and the fact that we don’t use gloves increases hand speed, making it harder to defend effectively. So a lot of punches will manage to get through. It’s not that we are all slack about it. 😅
There is a point system in Kudo where solid strikes to the head can win you a point,. So if the match goes to a judges decision, the person with more points can win. So taking shots to the head is something we all want to avoid.
In the Kudo dojo’s that I have trained at we work a lot on punch defense and counter striking. But remember it is an amateur sport, so generally we’re not going to be as good as top level pro’s. Just like a lot of amateur kickboxers have crappy defense too. Take their gloves off and it would be even worse.
One of the big differences between Kudo and MMA that I have found is the wrestling element. There is a far bigger emphasis placed on wrestling in MMA. Where as in Kudo it’s more clinching and throwing . The limited ground and pound in Kudo is also a noticeable difference.

Well it is true that we train to take hard shots to the chest and stomach. We also employ a circular style of blocking some of those shots. I have trained in Kyokushin since 1985. But we do tend to stay in the pocket too long, at least when I teach we also do kickboxing and circular movements. There is a time and a place to stay in the pocket, yet you need to be aware of when it's time to move out and do so fast.

Cool, on the topic of "breaking" in Kyokushin Karate tournaments, breaking wood boards is a prerequisite for competing. A fighter has to break at least three boards with various hand or elbow and sometimes foot techniques. Say there is a 'tie' after numerous extensions, the winner would be determined by the number of boards broken and the lighter weight fighter can win by the board calculation.

Mas Oyama or Masutatsu Oyama learnt traditional Korean Martial Arts and Chinese Martial Arts from his uncle as a child growing up in South Korea. He furthered his studies in Japan as a young man and learnt Karate when he was there. During World War 2 he changed his Korean name Choi Yeong-Eu to Japanese one Masutatsu Oyama. He served as a mechanic in the Japanese Air Force during the war years. Nowhere in his interviews by Black Belt Magazine etc did he ever said he learnt Judo. In his first published book "THIS IS KARATE" ... not a single Judo technique was demonstrated! In an interview with Black Belt Magazine back then he claimed he fought Siamese/Thai Boxer BLACK COPRA and defeated the Thai Boxer. This much I know about Masutatsu Oyama.

About the Gi-element you mention: I practise Karate for over 25 years (started with Shotokan, switched to an okinawan style, which I practise for 18 years now), and we always practise our throws and gripping as if we did not wear any kind of Gi. Because "on the streets" literally nobody wears a Gi. We always "grapple" as if we did not wear any kind of Gi. As this seem much more realistic to us. And no, here in Germany wears a coat or something that would resemble a Gi. So it is always a good thing to practise you no-Gi-grappling skills.

Good video. I first heard about Kudo during covid. I came across some videos from a guy who teaches it up in Wales. I think the only downside to this art, from a self defense perspective, is they don't teach you the kind of skills and drills you would get in a self defense system. This would however, be a great supplement to whatever self defense system you're training in. The main 2 being, grappling, and the transition between striking and grappling. I don't know why, but grappling seems to be lacking in all major self defense martial arts

Great video! I have been doing Kudo for almost a year now in Yr Eryri dojo in Wales, UK and absolutely love it. I have a nidan in Kyokushin and a brown belt in Ashihara and while I absolutely love both of those arts, there is no doubt in my mind that Kudo makes the most well rounded fighter of all of them. If you didn’t have a BJJ background and already have the ground covered as it were, I think you would find Kudo more appealing than Ashihara as it teaches all combat ranges in a way Ashihara doesn’t tend to do (no ground work). Either way, thanks for covering this great art. OSU!

I have understood from your video that Ashihara Karate does not use the helmet. We have an Ashihara Karate black belt in our Kudo Dojo. He just came back from world championships and they were using same helmets as Kudo fighters.

Finally! someone else who sees the big problem with dog brothers fights due to the fencing mask. It ends up being grappling and ground and pound. I would argue that the hockey gloves change a lot too considering most the old FMA guys were all about strikes to the hands. Kind of hard to grapple after an iron wood stick breaks half the bones in the hand.

this video was great. an idea is to make one for pankration. not the modern one which has nothing to do with the past , but the ancient real one. you can see in some pottery that some of them have even stance guard like muay thai

I make it a point not to comment too much on the channels of others because it is a slick way people use to get people to watch their channel. But since I have no reason to mention Kudo other than on this gentleman's channel, I will say this. I trained in Oyama karate many years ago with Shigeru Oyama and thought I had to be crazy to train that way (always swollen legs and hands!). I Took one seminar of Kudo in NY and will tell you that those who do that on the regular are a different breed! There is no such thing as "LIGHT KUDO"! lol

the disadvantage of the helmet is that you feel "safer", although the possibility of getting k.o.-ed is higher (because of the weight of the helmet)........

I like Kudo and there's a school literally 15 mins from my place.
I did a trial class. It was awesome. People were nice.
It was both modern and very traditional (as much "osu!" as in a Kyokushin school).
But I feel, especially for competition, people are too reckless about protecting their head because of the sense of safety they have from wearing the super helmet.
For competitors I feel like it's a bit CTE prone

kudo allows head buts so using some head protection is necessary otherwise a great damage will happen
also I think Kudo and combat sambo are kinda similar.
