  • Shhh ... listen. Do you hear that? It's our review of "Skinamarink," the deeply creepy, experimental horror film everyone's been talking about. Our great friend William Bibbiani (@williambibbiani), or Bibbs, returns to discuss the movie with Christy. It's the feature filmmaking debut of writer-director Kyle Edward Ball, whose work you can find on RUclips ‪@BitesizedNightmares‬. "Skinamarink" is in theaters now and will be streaming soon on Shudder.

It's selling out here at my local arthouse. The response is either it's the worst film in the last year or it's the best horror film in ages. It's the Babylon of horror films.

Yes, Kyle Edward Ball lives in Edmonton, Canada, and he shot Skinamarink in his parent's house (the one he grew up in) for $15,000. The name 'Skinamarink' comes from a children's song by Sharon Lois and Bram. It was just a working title until he thought of something better, but he never did. It wasn't supposed to hit theaters until later this year, but that all changed when it got pirated. Kyle has been contacted by most major studios, including a producer from Disney. Listening to an interview with him on CBC Canada, he sounded genuinely overwhelmed by the film's critical success. He said Shudder has been very supportive of him, even after the film got released online.
I haven't seen it yet, as I need to be in the right mood to sit through an experimental film.

This movie is a silent scream in your mind, while holding in your breath. It is so quiet at times you will hear your pounding heartbeat in your ears and begin narrating what you do not see. You will squirm in your seat while remaining perfectly still- until the terror subsides. Horror at its finest art form since the Shining! Saw it twice in a row it was that damn good.

@@BreakfastAllDay I finally got round to watching it tonight and just could not take e my eyes off the screen. I increasingly think that horror is our most innovative genre at the moment and this is a wonderful example. Like you Christy I don't really want to watch it again. Like you Bibbs, I think it's very unsettling, The film is so refreshingly different as I can't honestly think of a film I've seen like it (I've seen over 17,000). I don’t think I’ve been this scared by a movie since I was a little kid. It really brought be back to being utterly paralyzed with fear when I was a child watching a horror movie I wasn’t supposed to be watching. And the fact that it left me sleepless for nights after watching it just solidifies how effective it is as a horror film. Such a fantastic piece of work that I am trepidatious to see again yet am nevertheless utterly compelled to do so. Watching this at 2am, alone in the dark in your room totally seems like the best way to watch this and, possibly foolishly, I’m excited to do so when it starts streaming haha. Hi Christy/William, I just watched this after hearing WIlliam's audio review with some other dude somewhere (the name escapes me, I know it was from a Rotten Tomatoes link?) and I'd seen and heard a little bit about this before. I have to admit, I am completely right down the middle with this one. I thought this would TOTALLY be for me as an avid genre fan and lover of very low budget horror, but I honestly found it quite frustrating and in definite need of editing. Some shots go on for ever and it just feels like it would be a bit more effective at around 90 mins instead of 100 mins. I also found it quite grating on the eyes to look at whenever it used the static/glow from the TV (really had to look away at points as it was just headache-inducing for me).
But I will lean on what Christy said in the review about admiring it more than liking it and being a 'one and done'. As a concept, I really liked it and I found parts of it incredibly effective (2 sound stinger jump scares that completely got me). And the 'bedroom sequence' that William described? I mean, I'm a 48 year old horror and thriller aficionado that's seen a LOT of stuff, but what makes that entire sequence so damn effective (apart from the look and sound design) is the fact that it completely subverts expectations. Not that I knew that of course and watched that part between my fingers without hardly taking a breath haha! 😄

It’s exciting to see an interesting, original idea for a horror film. Mainstream horror is usually so forgettable, even if the movie isn’t bad.
There’s nothing forgettable about Skinamarink, but it is way too long to sustain its concept. That’s my only criticism of it. A 70-80 minute version would be perfect. I give it 7/10.

@@pamelaboden This is why I wanted to prepare people for this movie! It's not about following a story or the development of characters, it's about experiencing the sensation of creeping dread for so long, without resolution, that it begins to feel infinite. Most movies move quickly to attract and hold our attention in place, but movies like Skinamarink do the opposite. It moves very slowly to make us feel lost, and give us time to think, to wonder, and to imagine for ourselves how what we're watching connects to the characters and to our own subconscious psyche. It's really cool on its own level, but if you're comparing it to conventional plot-driven cinema, yeah! It's not going to be satisfying on that level, at all.

    • @pamelaboden
      @pamelaboden Год назад +2

@@williambibbiani6025 There is no character development, there is nothing of interest to watch. I get looking at screen and getting a feeling that it's creepy but this did nothing for me. I wasn't looking for a great story. I wasn't expecting anything in particular. I was just bored because, for most of the movie, you are watching cartoons, odd camera angles at nothing, other odd camera angels at other nothings. As far as I'm concerned, there are no characters. There are two unidentifiable children. Not sure of their ages or even their personalities. This movie is asking a lot of it's viewers that I just don't buy. I think I'm a good judge of what's entertaining and what's not. I love good horror and realize how difficult that is to produce. This ain't it.
I have to live knowing that some people liked this boring flick, you'll have to live with those of us who hated it..... with good reason. Because there are many of us. In fact, I believe there are more of us than of that that were frightened by this story.
By the way, I gave this a good chance. I saw the trailer and the narrator sounded scary and ominous. Then at about two in the morning, I sat in front of my large desktop and watched this in the dark. I was SHOCKED at how little this film gave us. I suppose since I'm not afraid of the dark, but was as child, that it was less scary to me. But it just was so boring, I found myself enjoying these generic cartoons and finding some interest in them. Because I couldn't find interest in the rest of the movie.
Don't forget, this is an experiment. This film is not meant to satisfy all who watch. I don't think it's even meant to satisfy many who watch. Thus, your opinion is in the minority, not the majority. And I am speaking of those who love mood in a film.

I adore experimental films and "elevated horror", both terms being used to describe this film, however, I just felt like it would work better as a short, or even if the run time was a bit shorter. The concept is great, the visuals were great, the voices were great, but I just felt the effectiveness was a bit diluted due to the length. When I heard that not only was there a horror movie titled Skinnamarink but that it was a CANADIAN horror movie, my first thought was, "Boy, Sharon, Lois, and Bram went dark!" Can't wait for some enterprising Canadian to cast Polkaroo in a slasher film, although the Canadians in the audience will always know who did it (for non-Canadians, on the kids' show The Polka Dot Door, there would always be two hosts, one of whom disappeared and just missed seeing Polkaroo because they were in the costume). Unlike Winnie-the-Pooh, though, I'm sure Polkaroo is copyright protected for some time to come. Will have to check out Skinnamarink when it's streaming.

Saw it opening weekend, a couple of Saturdays ago. Was surprised at the near full house and mostly young crowd. I thought for sure the whole experience would be giggles and sidebar talk...but, no. Everyone kept silent and during those moments of ramped up tension, I turned to my left at the young lovebird couple to see both with hands to face preparing themselves for a scary surprise. I appreciated it and went in expecting the worst and the artsy-fartsy weirdness (I'm a David Lynch fan...Lol) and have to say, I can bet those that went home probably trashing this film, are going to later regard this as one of the creepiest things they've ever seen. Those of us who don't mind this experimental type of filmmaking are just going forever love it. There were the obligatory 15 minutes worth of coming attractions before the movie started, one was a new Adam Driver meets Jurassic Park movie and the other, a new Scream and new Evil Dead. Have to say, the silent but moody chills that Skinamarink was comprised of by far was a welcome change to their blarringly loud, quick scare jumps CGI bloated, glossy productions. Just proves that all that glitters isn't gold.

Some items disappeared. Some low whispers. But nothing scary. I wish I seen what everyone else did. I watched it at night, in the dark, by myself. I started falling asleep several times because it was so dull and boring. If it was supposed to be about child abuse then that's a horrifying subject in general and happens in real life everyday. To call this a “movie” is almost categorically incorrect because this is truly far more of a “film experience” than just a movie, because there’s as much if not more going on in your head during this than there is happening on the screen either explicitly or implicitly

i just watched it in less than 3 minutes..it's a boring documentary with someone filming different rooms at night in a house with a final scene of a face that does not talk. it is as meaningless as eating grass without salt.

@@BreakfastAllDay Well ,they advertised in the trailer as a scary /original Horror film. All i saw was shots of the floor,Ceiling, feet and random noises....This is not a film / its a series of shots ..its a hot mess.
