I don't see Japan being worth a huge investment from the Tigers. It's not like there's a long list of Japanese players having real success in MLB, I can probably count them on my fingers. And it's not like signing the mid players is gonna win you big Japanese endorsements. Plus there's a clear precedent of Japanese players preferring certain locations, and they are NOT the Central divisions. Just seems like a waste of resources to try to compete for a limited pool of players with teams that already have, or are better situated to have, a pipeline to Japan and a good rep in that country. Tigers are better off trying to carve out their own lane than aiming to be a weak imitation of the Dodgers, only to bring home a participation trophy that doesn't move the needle.
Imagine if the Rangers, Cubs, and Athletics had this same attitude... and missed out on signing the likes of a Yu Darvish, Shota Imanaga, and the unknown potential of a Shotaro Morii. The whole point of investing in broad range international scouting is because you're NOT the Mets, Dodgers, or Yankees who can lean back on high priced free agents.
International market scouting has to be the most difficult scouting job in all of sports. Football, basketball and hockey teams are not scouting 13-16 year olds. Hopefully he develops physically and mentally and eventually becomes a real prospect. Would be nice to see him get out of Lakeland eventually which is the celling for many or most of our past international signings.
Cody: What are next steps for these international players. I'm assuming they stay in their countries for a few more years and then come and play in the complex league when they are 18 or so?
Will Scott Boras kill two birds with one stone? 🤔 If the offers for Alex Bregman are all in the same ball park financially, could Boras view this as an opportunity to steer Bregman to Detroit (potentially increasing the value of both players next contract)?
I think Devers would move to 1b and Boston would trade their young 1b because it's not a high valued position. Devers would not have an issue to add a bat like Bregman
Surprised to hear Cody say that the Tigers have been following Cris Rodriguez for yrs.. I mean this kid is still only 16. I didn't realize major league scouts invested that much time on players so young, when it's challenging enough in attempting to recognize which players in their early 20s will pan out. Btw, didn't Avila once upon a time have a 'twinkle in his eye' over Roberto Campos. So how's that been workin out so far?
These kids get a following at age 12 and that's why it's so important for the Tigers to get a reputation of being aggressive in pursuit, and will sign these players to a fair contract. They need to work hard and establish themselves as a player. Even KC has an established relationship and has hit on a few.

Ke'Bryan Hayes is a profoundly mediocre hitter, given our needs what a sad consolation. Great defense, sure. I guess that's where we are.
