He was a good exec but cost cutting made Nissan’s image worse. Look at those CVTs they pumped out and how people now see Nissan. However he made them money and helped them not to fall back. I wish he made quality products that would help Nissan stand out from reputation perspective.

Nissan are still hanging their problems on Carlos 5 years after his departure and after reversing his growth plans. Tells me they chose the wrong leadership and path and their poor performance since Ghosn departure proves it.
That is incorrect. Carlos Ghosn is a criminal. On November 19, 2018, the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office’s Special Investigation Department arrested Carlos Ghosn. He was charged with underreporting his compensation in securities reports and with embezzlement. Specifically, between July 2017 and July 2018, he had Nissan’s subsidiary, Middle East Nissan Co. (based in the United Arab Emirates), transfer a total of $10 million to the Omani distributor Suhail Bahwan Automobiles. Of this amount, $5 million (approximately 555 million yen) was funneled back into bank accounts effectively owned by Ghosn . He committed money laundering crime.

You make a good point in analyzing the global market, but not so much in the Japanese market. EVs are not very popular in Japan due to the high electricity costs. After the major earthquake in 2011, Japan effectively stopped using nuclear power plants, which caused electricity costs to rise significantly. Now, with increased petrol prices and a weak Japanese yen, owning an EV has become more expensive than ever. It is a luxury that only a few wealthy people can afford, which is why it hasn’t gained much popularity.
@@para_lki Japan is a very special case. Apart from the Japanese demographic who are cosmopolitan, sophisticated and affluent, the ordinary Japanese consumer will just buy a domestic car. There are next to no domestic Japanese brand EV models available in Japan. Having a car in Japan is something of a luxury as a good number of households do not have a car, especially in Tokyo. Car ownership per capita rates in Japan is lower than in less wealthy countries of Malaysia, Portugal, Poland and Uruguay.
Japan has strategically placed its bets on hydrogen technology, positioning it as an alternative to EVs. This isn’t just about innovation but also about countering reliance on China, which dominates the EV supply chain. Their cautious approach to EVs reflects a broader concern about geopolitical and economic vulnerabilities. Meanwhile, the relentless pursuit of greater efficiency in ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) technology has compromised reliability, further eroding consumer confidence. Compounding this, legacy automakers underestimated the Chinese market, clinging to outdated strategies and failing to adapt to shifting consumer preferences. The result? Many have suffered massive losses in a market they once sought to dominate. As the global auto industry hurtles toward a transformative era, the fallout will be severe. Consolidation seems inevitable, with only a few survivors emerging from the carnage. Many legacy automakers will likely be acquired for a fraction of their former value, a stark reminder of the cost of failing to adapt to a rapidly evolving landscape.
