There is allot more to being a business owner than most people think. One thing you'll find as time goes by is you will gain a core group of students that will help with classes and stay late to help fix equipment or paint. Those will be the ones who will help your business grow and get the word out there for you. From what ihave seen in your videos, you are a great teacher and good things will come with time. If you were closer I would definitely come train with you.
Mark,
Enjoyed your No One Wants To Talk About video. The behind the scenes look at your dojo, your personal side of your business, experiences, etc. It was a change of pace from your actual kali instructions. Good video.
My family n friends are looking forward to your next video !
Aloha from Hawaii !
Looking forward to the day I visit Hawaii! As always, thank you for the support.

Yeah come for a visit. Who knows, you could also conduct a seminar of FMA. Would be awesome, valuable info n demonstration!!!
But if it's for a "getaway" to RELAX, and NOT work, that would be good too. We need you in the best of health n if coming to Hawaii does that, fantastic !
Aloha
This came at the right time. I'm actually in the process right now of opening my own gym studio. I want to thank you for sharing your experience. It helped. Keep doing what you're doing!
yep i do wish more Martial artist would talk about the business end . very good video.
Most gyms are not FMA only gyms. It is rare so that is cool man.
Good luck on promoting your Filipino Martial Arts gym.
How did you get the money to open a gym? My dream is to open a martial arts gym. So difficult.
To your first comment: Yes we are a rarity among gyms, but I will say that we are introducing a BJJ program to complete our trinity of combat.
To this comment: I supplemented it from other jobs in the beginning, but eventually made enough to make it my career. Don't be fooled - I didn't always have this nice gym of mine.
I started by renting another gym's space which was terrible conditions - but it was all I could afford. I worked my way up and eventually got to where I am now. But the beginning for most people is messy but if you gotta start somewhere.
Take your time in crafting yourself and when you feel ready to make the jump - find an area you can rent but still look decent. Very few people would pay decent money to train in an unprofessional environment. Especially with martial arts/fitness being such a competitive industry.
Go over and beyond to earn your members trust, what you lack in aesthetics you make up for with quality lessons.
Read a book, seek advice from successful business owners or martial arts gym owners. Learn from them, take what you can apply.
Be humble - things like this take time, energy, emotion and sacrifice.. but can be so worth it.
and that's about all I'll give you without purchasing my mastermind course! (just kidding)
What is funny is usually BJJ or any martial art style ads a FMA program to their gym. But you are doing the opposite which is ironic. Because FMA is always a supplamental art in most western gyms. Also, in Philippines as you know most FMA students learn in small or 1-1 with the teacher and usually outside or at a house. Not many FMA masters over there even own a gym. I trained in this guy's house and also at a park and also at an MMA gym he rented space from just for me. Amazing time!
When you saved money did you even go to college or have students loans? That is my dilemma!!! I am screwed. But the only thing I am good at is martial arts and I am a good teacher and I want to own and run a martial arts program sooo bad! Rent is sooo high.
I used to teach out of a fitness center where the owner said he would allow me to start a martial arts class but then he bailed on me and cancelled it without letting it pick up. Then I used to rent out a space at a Karate gym for a class last year but it didn't work out. The dojo conditions were horrible too and very dirty. It was some kind of hippy kind of gym or whatever. But it did not work out and for some reason I could never get more people to join. I had 4 at the most but then they were older and quit bc of injuries or whatever reason they made up. I advertised on facebook and also went door to door leaving flyers but no luck. But I have 1 loyal student who has been with me since I started teaching in this city.
What sucks is I am qualified to teach Taekwondo and also FMA and I have actual programs and curriculum ready to go but only 1 student who learns from me twice a week in Kali. Your gym is small but it looks good and will get the job done until you get ready to move to a bigger location and create your empire!!!
How long were you teaching before you even had a place of your own and ow do you adveritse?
Also how did you build your channel? I have doe youtube since 2006 and still right now I only have just over 6,000 subs. Just does not pick up man. But having a gym like you do and student to make videos with really is a blessing for you.
Rock and roll!!
Honestly a gym that looks nice makes more money than a skilled martial arts master. No joke, you can suck really bad and teach total crap and still make money if your gym looks cool. People only care about how it looks and not about the skill or system of the instructor. That is why MMA gyms are so popular and successful. A clean gym with fitness stuff with mediocre coaching makes more money than a really good teacher who does not have a gym yet or his gym does not have fitness equipment and just a mat etc.
I knew it you are a Jedi
nelson damn it my covers blown
