- I was visiting my hide for photographing birds of prey once again. But sadly the birds did not show up in front of my camera. But as I was laying there for 6-7 hours I was thinking of my greatest moment photographing birds of prey. The hen harrier has been a dream for me to photograph, and around 4 years ago it happen. So I thought it could be nice sharing that moment with all of you great people. Hope you enjoy.

Wow, Such a great bird to Photograph Trond. The Hen Harrier is one of my favorites, and in such decline. I missed one recently whilst photographing Merlins here in the UK. As noted in my recent Vlog... Maybe next time, thanks great work.

Hi Trond, I have recently witnessed and photographed a pair of Hen Harriers performing a 'sky dance'. I live in the Charente France. They fly in the fields next to my garden. My photographs are reasonable but not yet what I want. I will upgrade my gear to try to achieve a higher quality soon. I agree the emotion was overwhelming. We are very lucky to have lots of wildlife on our doorstep, so I have no excuse. Love the images and videos.
Oh my God, beauty again! I found their nest in the forest this summer but didn´n dare to bother them. They managed to raise 3 youngs. Hope they´re still alive. Good luck with the birds of prey this winter! I almost don´t want to try myslef when I see your photos :)
Absolutely outstanding beautiful pictures of The hen harrier (Circus cyaneus) or Myrhauk in norwegian Trond. Very interesting considerations about being a nature photographer, and that there are many unsuccessful trips before one get the perfect pictures. The passion for photograping birds glows in your face when you are telling about the times you succeed such as with The hen harrier.

A glorious set of images Trond. I have only ever had a couple of sightings. Both brief and distant. I know exactly what you mean about reaping the rewards of putting in the effort. A few years back there was a family of otters frequenting a small stream a few miles from home. I spent every spare moment I had there, in cold weather, sitting on a bank behind a makeshift scrim hide with my boots in the water. The discomfort and boredom forgotten when an otter graced me with its presence. Often it was too dark to get any images and trying to get a fast enough shutter speed was a nightmare but when I came away with a picture, even if it did suffer from excess noise, was a triumph. Those moments are remembered forever.
Great story Trond ,fantastic set of images.its a great feeling when all the hard work and time spent in a hide pays off,I spent 30 hours over 3 days for not one image then on my fourth day I got some nice images and 3 days previous where forgotten about.

We have a Northern Harrier here where I live in Arizona. I have only been able to get distance shots of no consequence. I need to apply your patience and take the time it takes to capture good images.

I understand your feelings on this one Trond. One of my favourite birds of prey too. I've only ever seen one in the wild before at a place called Vyrnwy in Wales, UK. Sadly I wasn't able to photograph it. Hopefully one day you'll get to photograph another and vlog the experience too, that would be fantastic!
I've uploaded my first vlog this week and it really put into perspective just how difficult it can be to vlog wildlife photography trips. It's given me a deeper appreciation for the great work people like you do.
I'm actually doing a cruise of the Norwegian Fjords in my next year and I think one of our stops is Stavanger, but I'm really looking forward to it! Would be awesome to catch up with you if you're available.

This was probably not your most spectacular video so far. But it was good for me to know that even photographer like you are not sucessfully every day. This morning I went out early in the morning to take pictures from - the hen harrier! Since one month we have three female birds in the area where I life. It is not a bird breeding in Switzerland, but it is sometimes here as a winter guest. Unfortunately today I wasn't lucky at all. I saw one female bird flywing in its typical way near the ground. But it was to far away.
I just got a average shots of a kestrel, bad shots of a buzzard, and pictures of a huge flock of fieldfare. The pictures you show in your video is what I'm looking for. They are so beautiful! You're a great photgrapher and furthermore you live in the most beautiful country. I realy love Norway and I was there several times for trekking trips. I hope that one day I will be able to take some good shot. Thanks for sharing your experiance! Hilsen - Heini

Incredible shots, Trond, from an amazing experience! Photos to treasure and be proud of for sure. I think if a person experiences this just once you remember it forever. In my days before owning a telephoto lens, I had an experience seeing two Northern Harriers (Texas) flying and swooping while looking for prey over a prairie, they were quite some distance away but I remember being marveled at how similar their faces are to owls so they can see and hear their prey the same way owls do. They were beautiful and it didn't matter to me that I couldn't photograph them, I'll always remember that day.

Wow!! Wonderful images Trond. They are not doing too well in the Uk, mostly due to being persecuted over grouse moors, such a shame. Although I have seen 3 in the last few weeks on high ground near where I work, such stunning birds. Thanks for sharing. 👍

I have used both the Nikon D500 & D850 but have now part exchanged most of my Nikon gear for mirrorless Sony. Going by your images, you don't need to change system though fantastic photography as always

Awesome images Trond, thank you for sharing. I'm struggling with image quality as using a 300mm f4 Canon with 2x converter, can't afford that next step up to big prime but one day maybe.....
Have you considered a used 300mm f2.8 (non is version), they can go (perfect optical condition) for less than £1000 especially with black friday upcoming.

@@Groucherino no problem. And as for the converter... I find on older lenses ('non is' age lenses) the 2x noticeably knocks image quality, but the 1.4x is much better and can be cropped to 2x equivalent with better results.
