Yeah it’s frustrating how many reviews there are without anyone actually using the product. I gotta admit watching him use his cutting edge in the ferro rod about made me jump out of my skin though. However I’m glad he discussed the sharpening angle of the modified Scandi grind as opposed to full / true Scandi. I have the 154CM version with G10 scales and am trying to decide if it was worth it or not. But the one thing that stands out to me here is how thick the blade is compared to others. This gives me more confidence than other bushcraft blades I own.
I thought I was the only one to use the tip of the BOB on a fire steel. I'm glad, because seeing someone else do it confirms that it's not a bad idea. lol You're also the only other person I've seen with a Chinook Tarp. I found mine on Amazon over ten years ago. It was close to 12 feet, which was exactly what I wanted, and the price was right. I think I paid around $40. Now, Amazon only has a 9.5 foot Chinook. Big, versatile, and it folds up nice and small, about the size of a book. That thing was a real score. Great tarp. 👍

I like the looks of that knife. I made one similar to that last year with a pommel out the end like that, but for a lanyard strap. I'm getting some materials together to start back to building some knives. There is so many builders out there it's almost overwhelming. But I enjoy it and feel accomplished making a good one. Towards the end of the review you said the blade 3/8 thick, its actually 3/16 thick, not out to bust you or anything. Very good review! I got mine with the 154cm stainless blade a little while ago. Love it so far.

I took my BOB to a circular grinding stone, and took the shango notch of, left about 1.2 mil sticking out, as pommel.. I love it with the mirror finish and the balance and feel is better 'my opinion' looks great to,..shiny! I call it 'The Shango No' 😎

Mark Young Thanks Mark! Actually they did a nice job of finishing the edges of the scales, a lot more rounded over than lets say an Esee knife. I will get into that sheath at a later date for sure. Thanks again!
I agree that the shango notch does not work, and I had to soften the jimping with a dremel tool. If you remove the coating on the spine it will strike a fero rod (dremel tool again),. Using the tip for a fero rod works quite well as you showed. I really like your video. The BOB is a great knife, and the sheath is really nice. Thanks for a nice review.

Technically speaking a scandi grind with a secondary bevel is a Saber grind. Ask a knifemaker (I am not a knifemaker). Whatever you call it, I love it. This knife performs and will take a beating. The sheath is well designed. I like taco style kydex sheath's as they are more compact. I made a dangler out of mine with a D ring and survival bracelet as the metal belt clip will wear a hole in my pants. You did a great job reviewing the BOB. Tabletop reviews are nothing compared to real world use. Thank you for your video!

Best review I've seen on this knife you didn't make it sound more technical than it is when giving instructions on sharpening & that speaks to me. I just wish I'd done my research before I overpaid $200 for my BoB. ☹️

ground the whole pommel down while dipping in ice water , sanded it all smooth ,lightened up the handle and improved the balance. Also smoothed out the thumb ripping jimping. otherwise a good knife. Thanks for the review.
looking at the 154cm version of this knife as my main go-to knife for skinning/bushcraft/camping/anything knife. ive never spent this much on a knife before so i would be nervous that i would mess it up. i do own a firesteel (bayite 1/4" thick 6 inch long) that is just a BEAST of a steel, but i dont think that kydex sheathe would hold it, so i would most definitely invest in a leather sheathe that can hold the knfie and can hold a backup steel. maybe a pouch that would hold the sharpening tools needed for it. im just waiting for tops to make the 154cm version again because they ran out of the steel at the plant. if its guaranteed for life, i wouldnt mind spending at least 170 on a knife that would last me that long.
I have many knifes and bob is one of them I agree with your review I have the issue with it and I start a fire the same way you do with the back spine towards the tip but I carry that knife everywhere it is one of my most favorite

Just a personal opinion based off personal experience. It doesn't matter if you have a cheap gas station folder or the harbor freight survival Bowie or the best of the best. What matters is ur confidence with that blade and the willingness to destroy ur tools to make situation better or to get out of that situation
Nice to see a woodsman give a review instead of some jamoke who can't handle a butter knife. Love the blade, about to pull the trigger on a brown handled 1095 high carbon. Been going back and forth between stainless and high carbon but ultimately want to the durability. Enjoyed the vid, thanks!
Great review, and most of all that you did a 2 yesr review and not just an unboxing "I know it all". I have a Hellet Utvær and the Gerber Strongarm, wich has the same handle end. I find it very usefull. Insted of moving the knife downwards I pull the firerod towwrds me, and it works every time and I find it more safe them moving the knife. Have a good one.

Contrary to your comment on mass shootings. Most are mot committed with AR15 style semi automatic rifles. As for here in the USA.... The AR15 platform is not a military grade rifle. That rifle would be an M16 and or M4 derivitive rifle. There lies the problem with peoples mis understanding of the facts. Please stop promoting this misrepresentation of these firearms. And yes I am an ex Army officer and firearms instructor, so I feel I am qualified to make these comments. Just because a rifle looks similar or scary to the misinformed doesn't or shouldn't make it illegal to utilize or posess. Great review. Nice to actually see the knife in action. I got mine used on eBay for $60 US when our Canadian dollar was much higher. The bob knife does take a little more effort to use when bushcrafting but it's still fun knife to use. I sharpened the spine on mine to a sharp 90* angle, but it barely throws a spark. Guess they left it soft for strength.

WarGrrl3 Thank you very much I appreciate that. As far as putting a 90° spine on the bob,sure go for it. This is my second Tops Bob and my other one has a 90° spine. I tend to just use the spine at the tip of the blade as I showed in the video. I appreciate the sub and hope you enjoy the future content.
I'd probably go zero scandi and convex the edge .....scandivex😉 I love the way a good scandivex cuts, but thats just my taste your edge is perfectly fine by me. Nicely done Sir.
Nice review all good.But from the factory it comes with a scandivex like a Scandi Grind and a Konvex Secondary bevel. What you did is you gave it a different secondary bevel. Nothing wrong with it, it is like the LT Wright Genesis comes, it is great. Just wanted to mention that because I am actually delighted how good the scandivex handles our australian hardwood (gumtree that grows the grain all over the place) when making feathersticks! I used a Genesis for years, and still love it, but the tops does this particular task a bit better, with that grind. just wanted to let you know. Again great review!

I like North American knives but you often pay a premium for them in Europe and there's fantastic European knives to get while I'm here. I'll invest in one or two North American knives when I'm back in the great white north or the States. In the meantime I'll watch a few vids and miss my mountains over in BC.
@@Woodswalker1965 Yeah you looked like you knew what you were doing compared to some other channels like where they were cringily using the striker on the back of the knife in the worst way. One tip is that you can file out the spine to use as a ferro striker. I wish they had a version without the gimping and all, with a 90degree spine so you can get really good strikes with controllability.

I didn't really speak about the grind on this, I was saving it for the next video. It's a sabre with a convex secondary. There's enough meat behind the edge to maintain the convex grind. So far it's been extremely durable. Thanks for watching 👍

Excellent video my friend,how would you compare the Falkniven F1 basic model with the Top's Bob knife.I have very big hands triple X gloves and I think the handle might be too small on the Falkniven F1.Wade you certainly make brilliant feather sticks,and it's a joy too watch.Stay safe.
I got the CM 154 one.The knife is cool,but too heavy,the handle too thin,the cutting edge too far from the handle,jimping too aggresive.Not much fun for carving.It is meant to be part bushcraft,part survival and has some limitations on both.

GD Thanks very much! To be quite honest I have never handled the Lagom knife but I would guess that it is more of a pure "bushcraft" knife based on size and blade shape. The Tops Bob seems to cross over the bushcraft/survival knife lines a wee bit. I find the more you use a knife, any knife, you can make it do what you need it to do. No wrong decision here mate! I think the BOB is a solid belt knife that meets the criteria for a survival knife or a good woods knife. I don't have any experience with 154 cm so I can't really comment on that. Thanks for watching 👍
When you say you put a 20° bevel on there, is that per side or inclusive? That thing was really doing work! Also, if it's inclusive, do you ever ha e any issues with chipping or rolling when batoning through wood and knits like you were doing very effectively at the beginning of the video?
That's 20 degrees per side. It still was pretty slicey and fairly strong. I didn't have any serious rolling issues with it. Light to medium batonning is something this knife can handle. Thanks for watching👍

seandog nevius Hey brother not a fan of the bob? Well after batoning. it still feathered well, a knife needs to be sharp for that. After working with it, it needs to be stropped although I have not had issues with rolling or chipping. It is a bit large maybe for a pure bushcraft knife but I still enjoy using it a lot. Damn I just sharpened my tops bob like a Scandinavian grand and now it looks mank :( Did your trick and lifted it a bit it was razor sharp in like five passes. How do I get the bevel looking good again? Like a grain? Ps great video
Glad I was able to help!Are you are asking how to make the large bevel look good again? If so, keep working it with various grits of sandpaper until you get the finish you like. Work your cutting edge with a strop and it will eventually polish up beautifully! Thanks for watching👍
Wet sand it with 600 grit, then 800 grit. If you're not satisfied with that then finish with 1000 grit. That should give you the factory finish. The water is important, you want to get a good slurry going. Try not to overdo it though. Any grit higher than 1000 and it will start to get more of a mirror polish.

I got my BOB and traded it after 3 months. The primary bevel is too steep and this makes carving tasks and feather sticking difficult. It also comes with a micro bevel that takes hours of wet stoning to remove. The knife is outclassed by my Mora Companion in every way and it was just plain heavy so I got rid of it and went back to the Mora. The Shango notch and the bow drill divot are just gimmicks that don't work.

@@Woodswalker1965 If you see the Utube video on the factory visit, you will understand the amount of hand finishing involved with the making of TOPS knives. These are semi custom knives, hence the additional costs.
Do all of the BOB knives have that fake scandi grind with secondary bevel or did the previous owner do that to yours? Also have you tried the bow drill socket? It seems very small and like it should be lined with a brass cup to reduce friction and be rust proof.
fscii71. Yes the Tops Bob comes with a scandivex grind. I found it to be very strong and effective. The bow drill divot works exceptionally well as is . There is very little friction in the micarta. I have a few videos where I use the bob to produce a friction fire actually.

Its funny that you mostly found box opening vids and first impression vids. I really don't see the point without some sort of follow up. I want to see how things like this perform and have an honest assessment of the reviewers less and dislikes. If all you're showing is the unboxing then it's almost certainly going to be a positive review since nothing much has changed since you ordered it. Anyhow rant over. Looks like a nice piece of hardware, but there's no way anyone should be calling it a scandi grind. Thanks for letting us see it in action.

I've seen that as well. It's a fine tip, useful but fragile. I myself have broken the tip on a Bark River knife so it can happen regardless of the brand. Thanks for watching and commenting👍
Yeah, the BOB isn't going to have the strongest tip. Tip breakages correspond to blade thickness and grind. Rarely would one break a tip on an Essee 5 or BK2 but then some folks find those blades a bit thick for doing other tasks. But when you use a thinner blade it's gonna have a more fragile tip. I haven't seen any tip tests on a TOPs Operator 7 but I would imagine that would be a beast of a tip monster.
Mark Tong Mine was the 1095 version. I found without the secondary bevel the edge was prone to rolling so I put it back on. Your version has higher quality steel so it should be better. You can do 98% of what it will do with 20 dollar mora I guess it how much your budget is if you have wife and little mouths to feed you can get buy with Mora
In general practice I would not baton with a knife, maybe to split some wood for a bowdrill set or other light work, but if a axe is available I use it. This is a knife review after all and all aspects of the tools abilities should be highlighted in my opinion. Thanks for watching !👊
Ba k in the day I remember my grandfather and his friends in the ranch, hunting, cooking etc. And nobody was careful with their knives... case fixed knives all worn out and nobody cared about degrees of bevels or shit like that.. they woul sharpen their knives however as long as they could cut
I’m guessing your grandfather and his friends had muscle memory and really knew what they were doing when it comes to sharpening their well used knives. They instinctively knew where the bevel was. If you don’t sharpen on the bevel you will make your knives more dull. It’s all good as long as you get good results. Thanks for watching👍🍻

This is a working knife, for sure. Still great, after years of use, although needs some mineral oil from time to time.

I agree that the shango notch does not work, and I had to soften the jimping with a dremel tool. If you remove the coating on the spine it will strike a fero rod (dremel tool again),. Using the tip for a fero rod works quite well as you showed. I really like your video. The BOB is a great knife, and the sheath is really nice. Thanks for a nice review.

Technically speaking a scandi grind with a secondary bevel is a Saber grind. Ask a knifemaker (I am not a knifemaker). Whatever you call it, I love it. This knife performs and will take a beating. The sheath is well designed. I like taco style kydex sheath's as they are more compact. I made a dangler out of mine with a D ring and survival bracelet as the metal belt clip will wear a hole in my pants. You did a great job reviewing the BOB. Tabletop reviews are nothing compared to real world use. Thank you for your video!

ground the whole pommel down while dipping in ice water , sanded it all smooth ,lightened up the handle and improved the balance. Also smoothed out the thumb ripping jimping. otherwise a good knife. Thanks for the review.

I've watched a lot of videos on this knife, and removing the pommel and "softening" the jimping is what I would do. It is a very nice knife though. I
looking at the 154cm version of this knife as my main go-to knife for skinning/bushcraft/camping/anything knife. ive never spent this much on a knife before so i would be nervous that i would mess it up. i do own a firesteel (bayite 1/4" thick 6 inch long) that is just a BEAST of a steel, but i dont think that kydex sheathe would hold it, so i would most definitely invest in a leather sheathe that can hold the knfie and can hold a backup steel. maybe a pouch that would hold the sharpening tools needed for it. im just waiting for tops to make the 154cm version again because they ran out of the steel at the plant. if its guaranteed for life, i wouldnt mind spending at least 170 on a knife that would last me that long.

I have many knifes and bob is one of them I agree with your review I have the issue with it and I start a fire the same way you do with the back spine towards the tip but I carry that knife everywhere it is one of my most favorite

Just a personal opinion based off personal experience. It doesn't matter if you have a cheap gas station folder or the harbor freight survival Bowie or the best of the best. What matters is ur confidence with that blade and the willingness to destroy ur tools to make situation better or to get out of that situation

Nice to see a woodsman give a review instead of some jamoke who can't handle a butter knife. Love the blade, about to pull the trigger on a brown handled 1095 high carbon. Been going back and forth between stainless and high carbon but ultimately want to the durability. Enjoyed the vid, thanks!

Great review, and most of all that you did a 2 yesr review and not just an unboxing "I know it all". I have a Hellet Utvær and the Gerber Strongarm, wich has the same handle end. I find it very usefull. Insted of moving the knife downwards I pull the firerod towwrds me, and it works every time and I find it more safe them moving the knife. Have a good one.

Great review. Nice to actually see the knife in action. I got mine used on eBay for $60 US when our Canadian dollar was much higher. The bob knife does take a little more effort to use when bushcrafting but it's still fun knife to use. I sharpened the spine on mine to a sharp 90* angle, but it barely throws a spark. Guess they left it soft for strength.

Nice review all good.But from the factory it comes with a scandivex like a Scandi Grind and a Konvex Secondary bevel. What you did is you gave it a different secondary bevel. Nothing wrong with it, it is like the LT Wright Genesis comes, it is great. Just wanted to mention that because I am actually delighted how good the scandivex handles our australian hardwood (gumtree that grows the grain all over the place) when making feathersticks! I used a Genesis for years, and still love it, but the tops does this particular task a bit better, with that grind. just wanted to let you know. Again great review!

I like North American knives but you often pay a premium for them in Europe and there's fantastic European knives to get while I'm here. @@Woodswalker1965 Yeah you looked like you knew what you were doing compared to some other channels like where they were cringily using the striker on the back of the knife in the worst way. One tip is that you can file out the spine to use as a ferro striker. I wish they had a version without the gimping and all, with a 90degree spine so you can get really good strikes with controllability.

Your turning it more into a V edge if you sharpen it that way. The convex to scandi convex is a little more forgiving to maintain the convex edge.
I didn't really speak about the grind on this, I was saving it for the next video. It's a sabre with a convex secondary. There's enough meat behind the edge to maintain the convex grind. So far it's been extremely durable. Thanks for watching 👍

I got the CM 154 one.The knife is cool,but too heavy,the handle too thin,the cutting edge too far from the handle,jimping too aggresive.Not much fun for carving.It is meant to be part bushcraft,part survival and has some limitations on both.

GD Thanks very much! To be quite honest I have never handled the Lagom knife but I would guess that it is more of a pure "bushcraft" knife based on size and blade shape. The Tops Bob seems to cross over the bushcraft/survival knife lines a wee bit. I find the more you use a knife, any knife, you can make it do what you need it to do. No wrong decision here mate! I think the BOB is a solid belt knife that meets the criteria for a survival knife or a good woods knife. I don't have any experience with 154 cm so I can't really comment on that.

When you say you put a 20° bevel on there, is that per side or inclusive? That thing was really doing work! Also, if it's inclusive, do you ever ha e any issues with chipping or rolling when batoning through wood and knits like you were doing very effectively at the beginning of the video?
That's 20 degrees per side. It still was pretty slicey and fairly strong. I didn't have any serious rolling issues with it. Light to medium batonning is something this knife can handle. Thanks for watching👍

seandog nevius Hey brother not a fan of the bob? Well after batoning. it still feathered well, a knife needs to be sharp for that. After working with it, it needs to be stropped although I have not had issues with rolling or chipping. It is a bit large maybe for a pure bushcraft knife but I still enjoy using it a lot.

Glad I was able to help!Are you are asking how to make the large bevel look good again? If so, keep working it with various grits of sandpaper until you get the finish you like. Work your cutting edge with a strop and it will eventually polish up beautifully! Thanks for watching👍
Wet sand it with 600 grit, then 800 grit. If you're not satisfied with that then finish with 1000 grit. That should give you the factory finish. The water is important, you want to get a good slurry going. Try not to overdo it though. Any grit higher than 1000 and it will start to get more of a mirror polish.

I got my BOB and traded it after 3 months. The primary bevel is too steep and this makes carving tasks and feather sticking difficult. It also comes with a micro bevel that takes hours of wet stoning to remove. The knife is outclassed by my Mora Companion in every way and it was just plain heavy so I got rid of it and went back to the Mora. The Shango notch and the bow drill divot are just gimmicks that don't work.

If you see the Utube video on the factory visit, you will understand the amount of hand finishing involved with the making of TOPS knives. These are semi custom knives, hence the additional costs.

Do all of the BOB knives have that fake scandi grind with secondary bevel or did the previous owner do that to yours? Also have you tried the bow drill socket? It seems very small and like it should be lined with a brass cup to reduce friction and be rust proof.
fscii71. Yes the Tops Bob comes with a scandivex grind. I found it to be very strong and effective. The bow drill divot works exceptionally well as is . There is very little friction in the micarta. I have a few videos where I use the bob to produce a friction fire actually.

Its funny that you mostly found box opening vids and first impression vids. I really don't see the point without some sort of follow up. I want to see how things like this perform and have an honest assessment of the reviewers less and dislikes. If all you're showing is the unboxing then it's almost certainly going to be a positive review since nothing much has changed since you ordered it.
Anyhow rant over. Looks like a nice piece of hardware, but there's no way anyone should be calling it a scandi grind. Thanks for letting us see it in action.

I've seen that as well. It's a fine tip, useful but fragile. I myself have broken the tip on a Bark River knife so it can happen regardless of the brand. Thanks for watching and commenting👍
Yeah, the BOB isn't going to have the strongest tip. Tip breakages correspond to blade thickness and grind. Rarely would one break a tip on an Essee 5 or BK2 but then some folks find those blades a bit thick for doing other tasks. But when you use a thinner blade it's gonna have a more fragile tip. I haven't seen any tip tests on a TOPs Operator 7 but I would imagine that would be a beast of a tip monster.

Mark Tong Mine was the 1095 version. I found without the secondary bevel the edge was prone to rolling so I put it back on. Your version has higher quality steel so it should be better. Let me know how it works out for long term.

Why would you beat on such a nice knife when you have a axe sitting in your camp?
In general practice I would not baton with a knife, maybe to split some wood for a bowdrill set or other light work, but if a axe is available I use it.
This is a knife review after all and all aspects of the tools abilities should be highlighted in my opinion.

Ba k in the day I remember my grandfather and his friends in the ranch, hunting, cooking etc. And nobody was careful with their knives... case fixed knives all worn out and nobody cared about degrees of bevels or shit like that.. they woul sharpen their knives however as long as they could cut
I’m guessing your grandfather and his friends had muscle memory and really knew what they were doing when it comes to sharpening their well used knives. They instinctively knew where the bevel was. If you don’t sharpen on the bevel you will make your knives more dull. It’s all good as long as you get good results. Thanks for watching👍🍻
