- Getting good quality HD video out of the Original Xbox is getting more difficult with the ever increasing prices of the Official Microsoft HD AV Pack. But a new open source product known as the XOSVP (Xbox Open Source Video Pack) aims to be a low cost alternative. We pit it against 3 other HD component and HDMI cables and see if its worth the money.
Thank you to Darren Thompson for sending me out an XOSVP.

The OG Xbox truly was an amazing powerful game console at the time, being the 1st to HD gaming of course. The next gen Wii couldn't even do native HD resolutions.
You’re a legend
Wii was not next gen.
Go! Play Halo rice burner😁
@Conqueror Ryu you are rigth.
Amazing. Another option is to buy an original xbox 360 component cable, chop the end, chop the xbox composite cable connector end and wire the 360 cable to the ogxbox plug. It worked very well for me. You can also wire the unused composite video rca to the digital audio pins, and use it as a coaxial output.
There are eBay sellers offering these for those who don't want to solder themselves for $28-29. But lacks the Optical/Digital Audio Out. If you don't have a sound system, these would be an affordable option.
I got 3 cables. 2 Component cables, Paid $34 and $42. HD AV Pack with all connections for $10 at a swap meet...
the guys from my life in gaming keep avoiding this console no matter how many times I tell them I really want to watch it, but then you do this, thanks, really
Xbox original rocks
@Arnold101Knight Is it 2009 again? Grow up.
@Arnold101Knight ya its 2019, you have to be PC about everything. how dare you call someone fat, you might hurt their feelings
@Arnold101Knight That moment you attack someone who tried to defend you :D
@@ZunaZurugi what a moron
$15 for this? Sounds like a fun project to build yourself at an insanely awesome bargain. Awesome review, my dude!
Sold out
Some folks wait around for mondays only to watch GoT, I wait around for these MVG!! 🔥🔥🔥
both ;)
This looks fantastic. I'll definitely be picking one of these up for myself. Great work as usual MVG!
you really make high quality videos. For anything vintage gaming you are truly the best choice! Thank you!
I've been watching your videos for a while now, and I really appreciate the amount of work and dedication you put into these. Keep it up!
Microsoft also produced an Original Xbox Component Video Cable. Their component cable has the benefit of actually being an officially Microsoft manufactured cable and not a pass through adapter like Microsoft's High Definition AV Pack that requires using a good quality component/audio cable to hook it up to the Xbox in order to get great results.
Yeah I have this and it's build quality is fantastic. Lovely metal phono plugs and it has decent analogue audio out.
The plugs are gold plated so you get the best sound and picture people!!
@@afriend9428 the only benefit of being gold plated is it won't oxidize, it doesn't improve quality and is less conductive than copper.
Motolav Everybody and all experts say gold is the best conductor copper is a close second I know! 🤓
@@afriend9428 Gold isn't the best... Look it up
Talk about the right time to rediscover the OG Xbox. You are absolutely killing it with the Xbox content.
It’s easy to be engaged with your videos, everything is professionally done and has a great flow. Really hope you keep on this channel because I’m a big fan.
Thank you for your outstanding comparison video, very helpful for a original Xbox fan like myself my friend!
Great Video as always Brother...
great video! One small thing I caught that you may want to annotate is at 2:34 you say "Optical video out" when i'm pretty sure you meant "optical audio out"
MVG your channel quality is only improving! Keep these coming. Love the podcast btw.
I just came across your channel and I'm really enjoying your videos.
Keep it up! :D
Great video. I've been searching for a solid video comparing OG Xbox video output. Thanks!
Thank you so much for making these videos. You have the best retro (are we calling xbox/GC/ps2 retro now?) and homebrew channel. You're a legend!
Loving all your content for the OG Xbox! Keep it coming.
Great video as always bro
You are the only RUclips that can make me watch 10 minutes of content about a video accessory for a gen1 xbox console
Don't you mean 6th generation?
@@emersonarmstrong89 im referring to the modern lineup. the xbox was the first gen of the xbox line.
Side note: I just noticed that your Xbox's port says "Audio Video Input/Output" -- Was there ever anything that utilized the "input" capabilities? Or was that just labeled weird?
i see your comments on every video!
I don't know about the Xbox being used to receive signals but some TVs did come with that same connector, called "VPORT." RCA sold a few models with it, the 27V550T was immediately Bing-able.
Love your content, always look forward to the releases. Since watching your videos a couple months ago I've purchased 2x Dreamcast systems and 2x dchdmi units and a pile of DC games. Also got an Xbox and a bunch of the Sega releases.
Thanks for the review of the hardware. Hoping those pound cables come up with a better revision, but will take a look at this open source component setup.
I actually got order #1 of the units! :D Been really enjoying it.
Dude, that's a SWEET shirt.
I keep saying it but it's always very pleasing to see older systems still getting the support of new innovations and accessories. This is a brilliant solution that balances the scales of quality vs price slightly more in our favour :)
I had my crystal xbox apart today taking out the rtc cap c763 out and removing electrolyte and was thinking about its video out options.
Replace thermal paste too
MVG's xbox videos are what Mondays were made for.
Great video, MVG. You're pushing me closer to getting an original Xbox by the day. I've wanted one for DOA3 for awhile, but I can't justify buying an entire console just for that.
I feel very fortunate that about a year ago or so I snagged that official HD AV pack for around $30.
Excellent comparison! I still use my Xbox every night and am always amazed that a near 20 year old console can look this good!
This is an amazing product for the price! Definitely a no-brainer! I use n64freak's hdmi adapter and it's amazing, but cost around $80. This fills a great price point for quality. MVG, another great video!
Just made this old man’s day 👾 thanks 🙏 Brother for this bit of awesomeness
Time to get yourself a HDMI board from N64Freak. It’s not anywhere near as cheap, but it’s absolutely the best output for the OGX.
Great video, thanks for sharing!
Paid $75 for my n64 freak hdmi adapter but I love it
Virgil Kellogg same here...just have to install mine first!!!
Where can I order this ? I'm definitely interested
You have to find the guy on a forum somewhere, and yes their cable is better than the Panorama but what's it really worth when component cables can be readily made using 360 cables and the connector end off a SD xbox AV cable?
Modern Vintage Gamer I sent you a DM via IG with his info.
Fantastic video, i left a like! :D Thank you for letting me know about this I might buy one!
Years ago I cut open a spare A/V cable and looked up the pin out for the connector. I broke it out into a project box with nothing but RCA jacks on a board. I didn't do any filtering. I don't even have proper shielding on it as I used some spare cat5 to move the signals from the xbox to the RCA jacks and then run to a TV with component cables. I never had any issues with it, but I am glad people are making stuff like this available.
After seeing the first glimpse of this, i headed to Darren's Shop and purchased the DIY-Kit.
Shipping to Australia will only take 8 days :P
I just woke up, watched the vid, went to get one, they're sold out already. Turns out i was already a little late :o its only been a few hours
hope you got the region mod done if you are planning on playing any games in progressive or HD modes. Know if you are here 98% you did, but I'm still bitter over that issue for PAL users.
@@anasevi9456 been modding xbox consoles since 2003 ;-)
Currently run the crappy ebay HD cables, which love to drop out.
@@jameslangridge8849 i got the DIY kit, complete unit was sold out.
I was going to buy a few of the DIY but i thought i better not be greedy.
Shouldve bought a dozen of them and sold them on gumtree lol
Just a heads up xosvp in the title is spelled wrong
I was about to comment that, didn't think anyone would really notice because it's so subtle. It's XOSVP, not XOVSP
fixed. good eye! thank you :)
Was looking for this info from a trusted source for a couple days!
Nice - will invest in a couple when they're back in stock. Currently using cheap component cables and Ex-Pro HDMI upscalers with my softmodded OG Xboxes and the video quality from both (1.1 & 1.6) is surprisingly good. I did go have to throw a few cables away before I found some good ones though.
Please test the "COMPONENT MONSTER CABLES" as a comparison to the others .. Love the OG XBOX vidz !!
This cable Works in sega chihiro?
Pretty cool little project. I'm hoping this leads to top-notch HDMI output options like the Carby or GCHD for Gamecube. That will let me swap out the Monster Component cables for the Xbox. Those things create a beautiful picture but death grip my component switcher ;P
Excited for this, as I've been using my original Xbox to listen to music and there's a terrible humming sound coming from it, so I think this will really help with my image and sound quality! Thanks for sharing!
Too bad they are now out of stock but, hopefully, the guy will sell some more soon.
Nice to see continued attention to this best of its day...
Great vid dude
Great video!
Thanks for providing the review and info! I am currently on a “cheap ass component cable” hooked up to my Pioneer Kuro KRP500. Time to upgrade to better IQ I think 👍🏻
How do the Monster Compnent Cables fair, I think I still have mine somewhere
Great review! I've personally had a great picture using sub-$10 component cables on my digital TVs for over a decade, but newer TVs are quickly dropping component inputs, making an HDMI adapter like this more and more critical. My only suggestion is for you to provide the lag time in milliseconds for any analog-to-digital converter, as high lag can ruin a retro or competitive gaming experience. This is especially true on modern digital TVs, as most already have ridiculously high lag already. My $2500 4k LG from a few years ago is 67ms! So I have little to no room to add any additional lag.
MVG, you are the man! Loved it!
Awesome that people still make stuff like this for the old consoles!!
I just ended up buying an official Xbox 360 component cable and converting it to the OG Xbox-in. Works wonders!
I went through around 4 cheap components from eBay as well as through the Hyperkin one, but all of those were losing signal for a few seconds every minute or so.
The converted (via soldering) one I made looks cleaner, crisper and it gotten rid of the lost signal issues.
i made a component cable out of an old ogxbox cable and a xbox 360 component cable, its pretty amazing, the latest thing were doing on the ogxbox forum/facebook page is converting wii2hdmi adapters to work with ogxbox, i believe it is the best picture quality yet!
Still waiting for the next batch of preorders on this adapter. I'd love to get my hands on one of these!
For the darkness issue, try adjusting the gamma on your tv. It will adjust mostly dark areas and usually dont disturb color as bad as "brightness" settings
I picked up the Hyperkin cable a few weeks ago and it works great.
Love me some Bank Holiday Monday MVG :)
The FiiO Taishan is an awesome bit of kit!
Thanks mvg this helps a lot. I thought I would have to switch my hd cable on my o.g. xbox but I see that I'm fine.
I'm currently using the Psyclone Component Cables for OG Xbox. Do you have any experience with these?
I recommend using Belden component cables. Sold by Bluejeans Cables.
Diggin the intro music
Official HD Pack looks a little sharper but that definitely comes close to it. More options is definitely great. I’m happy I already got the official HD pack, also got “frozen” VGA cables which is pretty amazing too
Was just looking for a solution to this, awesome!
Great video, I have a question though. I own the MS official brand component cables, not the official HD AV pack, am I missing out on anything other than digital optical audio? Is the video quality equal between the two? Thanks!
This video came right in time. I just got my classic Xbox out to play some Halo but only have this cheap component cable. Now I was looking for a good but cheap alternative. Thanks MVG for this Review. Definately going for the XOSVP!
Edit: Nevermind, it's sold out lol
Edit2 (08/19/2019) Got an email that my XOSVP is on its way to me. I hope it was worth the wait.
Since seeing this video earlier this year I have tried purchasing the XOSVP a few times. I never heard back from the individual making these. I would have bought a kit if it was clear how to do so. I eventually chose to buy an official Xbox HD pack from ebay.
I have the pound HD , no issues on systems with shielding intact, get artifacting if shield removed!
2:32 Iít also includes optical video out for the best audio quality. haha
What is funny about that? It's a digital signal.
@@187StaticMr Pretty sure analog audio is higher quality than lossy digital. It's not HDMI.
I hate that. Why not just include audio ports? I have to get a separate box for audio ffs
@@187StaticMr maybe because video and audio are two very different things.
@@ShindlerReal Well I believe it maxes out around 384kbps(back then, now it is about 15MBps bitrate) if I'm not mistaken. In my opinion its perceived quality by the end user is in the neglible difference range. Meaning I believe most folks wouldn't be able to do a blind a/b test and pass it. Not facts just my opinion.
It's nice to see that there is a good alternative to the official HD AV pack.
An important note: if you're using a PAL Xbox, RGB SCART might be a better option. Microsoft disabled progressive scanning on PAL systems. Even if you soft mod the console, you'd have to find games compatible with the enhanced resolution modes. The PAL games I had access to could only do 480p and it looked terrible. And I was using the official Xbox component cables. The pictures looked heavily compressed with much more noticeable aliasing. And as the my capture card deinterlaced the 576i to 576p, my recordings were LOWER resolution than before the softmod. Just get RGB SCART if you're in PAL and feed it into an upscaler. Doesn't have to be the Framemeister, since the resolution is 576i even cheap SCART upscalers will be able to handle it without issue.
Sold out. Will keep using cheap component cables on my hdtv.
This is a great product for getting the best possible video and audio out of your XBox, I came across this a year ago when I was looking for options better than the cheap components. The bigger issue, which is why I ended up going for the POUND (Revised) cable is just the inputs on my TV. A lot of newer LCD HDTVs are removing everything but HDMI, while the POUND might not be the best it is really hard to beat for HDMI without spending hundreds of dollars and adding a ton of equiptment.
I have that box component adapter as well. It seems to have circuit boards and other things that make it better than a standard component cable.
Dude, that shirt is AMAZING.
Awesome shirt!!!
By the time you get the XOSVP, the Monster component cables and the Audio converter. you may as well just get the Official Microsoft HD AV Pack. They would end up costing the same.
99% of modern TVs have optical
Unless I grossly misundertood this thing, the "Official Microsoft HD AV Pack" only advantage is that you can get stereo audio from it as well. Both need quality component cables and unless you have a TOSLINK input in your setup already, you need a DAC for both, if you want surround sound. At least in Germany, there is no listing of the HD AV Pack on Ebay either. Not sure what the situation here was, with SCART being widely available and it offering RBG pins. It is varying widely in price though, I see 32USD and 75USD prices and everything between. No reason to get this before trying for a $35 official pack is my guess.
Shocked at first that the beard was gone, then realised this is an old video 🤣
really like the fact that it comes as a cheap diy kit. winner!
WHAT did you say the original component cable goes for? Man, I've got two of 'em from my XBMC days :D
Hold on to them and sell when price will be at least 3 figures
Well, there are prices of sold cables going for $32 as well though. $75 has been the outlier so far.
@@DTBootlegs well, considering you can't even other this adapter, I wouldn't expect prices of the official cables to drop anytime soon.
I love the intro music.
I've owned the MS HD pack and the Monster Component Cables with the additional toslink cable since they were new. I still have the Monster component cable with the digital audio dongle addon using a 3rd party optical cable and it still looks and sounds amazing. I let the MS HD pack and Monster optical cable go when I sold an OG Xbox bundle to a friend a few years ago. Are you able to test the Monster Component cable and, if so, notice any difference?
I wonder how would the Monster Gamelink 400x Component cables compare?
I'd be curious to see this tested too. Subjectively, I have a set of these cables hooked up to a 65" Samsung 4K LED TV from a few years ago and I'm very pleased with the results, but I've never owned or used one of the official HD AV Packs.
I got those also on all my consoles, I also find them on occasion at thrift stores for the 6-8$ mark so I am definitely curious to know.
even then i'm really not a fan of the xbox's 480p output. i don't know if its my xbox or what but the image is just really soft in 480p. in 480i there's a lot of scrolling lines and it looks ugly as hell. do you know whats up with that?
i love how you stress personal experience. Great practice!
Sweet video! I wish I knew about this before I paid $65 for the official HD pack on eBay... How are you capturing the component video? It looks really good. I tried connecting the HD video pack to my 24" Dell 1440p monitor and it looked like smeared crap! I don't know if this has something to do with the native 1440p LCD display or what but I wasn't impressed.
MVG, thanks for this very nice review. Unfortunately my new TV doesn‘t have a component input anymore. Could you recommed a component to hdmi solution without any loss of quality? Thanks
I'm glad Soul Calibur 2 got a mention in this video. I was blown away the first time I booted it up after softmodding my PAL Xbox and plugging in my Monster Gamelink 400x Component cables. Definitely one of the cleanest looking Xbox games.
I have the Hyperkin HDMI cable, and on my Sony TV, it works and looks great. A beautiful clear picture, no artifacts, and no noticeable input lag. I also have the official Microsoft component cable. I swapped cables while playing several Xbox titles, and Hyperkin cable looks very close to the Microsoft component one. But I've heard certain tv's have issues with it.
I'm using Monster component running on my 40" Sony wega CRT...picture is amazing
I didn’t have Xbox when it first came out but I do enjoy my Xbox now and the exclusive game titles like Jedi Academy
If they would only now come out with an original Xbox controller that lives up to the originals but also improves upon them like Retro Fighters have been doing. The original Xbox controllers in my experience are getting harder to find for an acceptable quality condition. The sticks are often chewed up and/or the rubber on them is torn off revealing plastic. The buttons are all junked up and no amount of cleaning can fix them. Some of the wires are frayed as well. Then there's the improvements I'd like to see, such as making triggers or bumpers for the white and black buttons. Playing MK Shaolin monks on the Xbox is superior graphically to the PS2 version, but it's annoying to pull off some of the moves using those tiny white and black buttons.
nice Video as always, but you made a mistake, DAC is Digital to Anaglog Converter, not Digital to Audio, but i guess that was just a mistake that slipped through editing. No hate, flame or anything like that, but i wanted to clarify that for people who dont know.
In 2:33 I guess you said "optical video out", but you mean "optical audio out", is that right? I don't speak a good english XD
Yes
This seems to be exactly what I need for my current setup! How is ghosting on it?
I used to have an official MS HD pack that was crisp as hell, but the cheap eBay knock off AND the expensive Monster HD cable I got before that, both had very visible ghosting, mainly apparent in XBMC and game huds/menus.
As much as I am a fan of your channel for ages, this is the first time I decided to comment:
1) In my humble opinion, a cheap component cable from ebay may do all the tricks regarding image quality. just don't buy the worst out there.
2) These cables don't have optic video, but the signal the xbox motherboard output is pure digital audio and compatible to coaxial BUT you need to run a separate GND (available from the connector). If you use the same GND as the other A/V outputs the image will suffer as these usually are all soldered together.
3) With this solution you may bypass the need of optical cables and all you need to do is solder two wires.
SO: you don't need to go soldering anything straight out of the motherboard. that's not needed if you don't want to change your console. The pinout is available throughout the web btw.
In the past, a friend of mine worked for Microsoft, and he was given the original Xbox and the quality it outputted was great. That explains how
I been waiting for this
Wow, this is awesome! With the YGX015 adapter vanished from Ebay this might be the next best solution.
Another good alternative are official 360 component cables that have the connector replaced with an Xbox one. You can make these yourself or as I did buy from eBay, they're just as good as the official HD box but less bulky and half the price (although they lack digital audio out).
I've had a great experience with the Pound cable, but I could just be one of the lucky ones. I have it going to a 6-in 2-out HDMI matrix that can extract the audio. This lets me use headphones with my original Xbox the same way I do with all my other modern consoles. It's a really convenient setup using HDMI, even though it may not be the best option out there for quality.
