  • Getting good quality HD video out of the Original Xbox is getting more difficult with the ever increasing prices of the Official Microsoft HD AV Pack. But a new open source product known as the XOSVP (Xbox Open Source Video Pack) aims to be a low cost alternative. We pit it against 3 other HD component and HDMI cables and see if its worth the money.
Thank you to Darren Thompson for sending me out an XOSVP.

The OG Xbox truly was an amazing powerful game console at the time, being the 1st to HD gaming of course. The next gen Wii couldn't even do native HD resolutions.

Amazing. Another option is to buy an original xbox 360 component cable, chop the end, chop the xbox composite cable connector end and wire the 360 cable to the ogxbox plug. It worked very well for me. You can also wire the unused composite video rca to the digital audio pins, and use it as a coaxial output.

There are eBay sellers offering these for those who don't want to solder themselves for $28-29. But lacks the Optical/Digital Audio Out. If you don't have a sound system, these would be an affordable option.
I got 3 cables. 2 Component cables, Paid $34 and $42. HD AV Pack with all connections for $10 at a swap meet...

Microsoft also produced an Original Xbox Component Video Cable. Their component cable has the benefit of actually being an officially Microsoft manufactured cable and not a pass through adapter like Microsoft's High Definition AV Pack that requires using a good quality component/audio cable to hook it up to the Xbox in order to get great results.

Years ago I cut open a spare A/V cable and looked up the pin out for the connector. I broke it out into a project box with nothing but RCA jacks on a board. I didn't do any filtering. I don't even have proper shielding on it as I used some spare cat5 to move the signals from the xbox to the RCA jacks and then run to a TV with component cables. I never had any issues with it, but I am glad people are making stuff like this available.

Great review! I've personally had a great picture using sub-$10 component cables on my digital TVs for over a decade, but newer TVs are quickly dropping component inputs, making an HDMI adapter like this more and more critical. My only suggestion is for you to provide the lag time in milliseconds for any analog-to-digital converter, as high lag can ruin a retro or competitive gaming experience. This is especially true on modern digital TVs, as most already have ridiculously high lag already. My $2500 4k LG from a few years ago is 67ms! So I have little to no room to add any additional lag.

An important note: if you're using a PAL Xbox, RGB SCART might be a better option. Microsoft disabled progressive scanning on PAL systems. Even if you soft mod the console, you'd have to find games compatible with the enhanced resolution modes. The PAL games I had access to could only do 480p and it looked terrible. And I was using the official Xbox component cables. The pictures looked heavily compressed with much more noticeable aliasing. And as the my capture card deinterlaced the 576i to 576p, my recordings were LOWER resolution than before the softmod. Just get RGB SCART if you're in PAL and feed it into an upscaler. Doesn't have to be the Framemeister, since the resolution is 576i even cheap SCART upscalers will be able to handle it without issue.

This is a great product for getting the best possible video and audio out of your XBox, I came across this a year ago when I was looking for options better than the cheap components. The bigger issue, which is why I ended up going for the POUND (Revised) cable is just the inputs on my TV. A lot of newer LCD HDTVs are removing everything but HDMI, while the POUND might not be the best it is really hard to beat for HDMI without spending hundreds of dollars and adding a ton of equiptment.

Unless I grossly misundertood this thing, the "Official Microsoft HD AV Pack" only advantage is that you can get stereo audio from it as well. Both need quality component cables and unless you have a TOSLINK input in your setup already, you need a DAC for both, if you want surround sound. At least in Germany, there is no listing of the HD AV Pack on Ebay either. Not sure what the situation here was, with SCART being widely available and it offering RBG pins. It is varying widely in price though, I see 32USD and 75USD prices and everything between. No reason to get this before trying for a $35 official pack is my guess.

I let the MS HD pack and Monster optical cable go when I sold an OG Xbox bundle to a friend a few years ago. Are you able to test the Monster Component cable and, if so, notice any difference?

I wonder how would the Monster Gamelink 400x Component cables compare?

I'd be curious to see this tested too. Subjectively, I have a set of these cables hooked up to a 65" Samsung 4K LED TV from a few years ago and I'm very pleased with the results, but I've never owned or used one of the official HD AV Packs.

I got those also on all my consoles, I also find them on occasion at thrift stores for the 6-8$ mark so I am definitely curious to know.

even then i'm really not a fan of the xbox's 480p output. i don't know if its my xbox or what but the image is just really soft in 480p. in 480i there's a lot of scrolling lines and it looks ugly as hell. do you know whats up with that?

Sweet video! I wish I knew about this before I paid $65 for the official HD pack on eBay... How are you capturing the component video? It looks really good. I tried connecting the HD video pack to my 24" Dell 1440p monitor and it looked like smeared crap! I don't know if this has something to do with the native 1440p LCD display or what but I wasn't impressed.

MVG, thanks for this very nice review. Unfortunately my new TV doesn‘t have a component input anymore. Could you recommed a component to hdmi solution without any loss of quality? Thanks

I'm glad Soul Calibur 2 got a mention in this video. I was blown away the first time I booted it up after softmodding my PAL Xbox and plugging in my Monster Gamelink 400x Component cables. Definitely one of the cleanest looking Xbox games.

I have the Hyperkin HDMI cable, and on my Sony TV, it works and looks great. A beautiful clear picture, no artifacts, and no noticeable input lag. I also have the official Microsoft component cable. I swapped cables while playing several Xbox titles, and Hyperkin cable looks very close to the Microsoft component one. But I've heard certain tv's have issues with it.

If they would only now come out with an original Xbox controller that lives up to the originals but also improves upon them like Retro Fighters have been doing. The original Xbox controllers in my experience are getting harder to find for an acceptable quality condition. The sticks are often chewed up and/or the rubber on them is torn off revealing plastic. The buttons are all junked up and no amount of cleaning can fix them. Some of the wires are frayed as well. Then there's the improvements I'd like to see, such as making triggers or bumpers for the white and black buttons. Playing MK Shaolin monks on the Xbox is superior graphically to the PS2 version, but it's annoying to pull off some of the moves using those tiny white and black buttons.

nice Video as always, but you made a mistake, DAC is Digital to Anaglog Converter, not Digital to Audio, but i guess that was just a mistake that slipped through editing. No hate, flame or anything like that, but i wanted to clarify that for people who dont know.

In 2:33 I guess you said "optical video out", but you mean "optical audio out", is that right? I don't speak a good english XD

This seems to be exactly what I need for my current setup! How is ghosting on it?
I used to have an official MS HD pack that was crisp as hell, but the cheap eBay knock off AND the expensive Monster HD cable I got before that, both had very visible ghosting, mainly apparent in XBMC and game huds/menus.

As much as I am a fan of your channel for ages, this is the first time I decided to comment:
    1) In my humble opinion, a cheap component cable from ebay may do all the tricks regarding image quality. just don't buy the worst out there.
    2) These cables don't have optic video, but the signal the xbox motherboard output is pure digital audio and compatible to coaxial BUT you need to run a separate GND (available from the connector). If you use the same GND as the other A/V outputs the image will suffer as these usually are all soldered together.
    3) With this solution you may bypass the need of optical cables and all you need to do is solder two wires.
SO: you don't need to go soldering anything straight out of the motherboard. that's not needed if you don't want to change your console. The pinout is available throughout the web btw.

Another good alternative are official 360 component cables that have the connector replaced with an Xbox one. You can make these yourself or as I did buy from eBay, they're just as good as the official HD box but less bulky and half the price (although they lack digital audio out).

I've had a great experience with the Pound cable, but I could just be one of the lucky ones. I have it going to a 6-in 2-out HDMI matrix that can extract the audio. This lets me use headphones with my original Xbox the same way I do with all my other modern consoles. It's a really convenient setup using HDMI, even though it may not be the best option out there for quality.
