    Dorothy was a tough old lady but she was always willing to talk about an issue. She used to always push gun control in her commentaries and I would call in to the station to complain and she would actually take the call and talk to me.

    I definitely remember when this happened. It was the talk of the city back then. Ole Dorthy Fuldheim (some Clevelanders pronounced it Full-time) didn't take crap from no one and she wasn't one to hold back on her opinions. She went out to cover the Kent State shootings and was caught on air saying "we are killing our children!" There were people calling for her immediate dismissal but she had more fans than detractors, plus backing from the station management. She stayed on the air anyway, until the day she had a stroke while on live television.

    Thanks for the update on Jerry Rubin. I did hear that he went to work in the business world, but Wallstreet? Wow now that is a turn around. Hopefully he thinks better than what he did back as a very young man. One thing I can say though, is this. Those guys [Hoffman, Rubin, Hayden et al radicals] ] were being exploited by the media too. Media only cared about sensationalism and it showed back then and is even worse now than before. No ideas, substance or good debate, just sell commercials and printed ads. They were hypocrites just like the subjects they were covering. Once again thanks for the update and have a good day mate.

      All these nice polite people were taken off guard by someone being such a jerk. Conservative men with close cropped brill creamed hair, tailored suits, and hard soled shined shoes.
      But now, in 2024, the "squares" are all gone, everyones trying to be outrageous and weird, so theres no contrast and no one laughs.

    Rubin’s style of argument accomplished for him what he wanted it to accomplish, media exposure. Unfortunately, it not only did nothing to advance the ideas he presented it, it only further entrenched the establishment in their opposition but also provoked them into a violent response.
    There were some great ideas in the counterculture movement. Some were unrealistic but many where strong. Legalization of marijuana for recreational use for instance. It’s absurd this issue is still an issue after more than 50 years. However, part of the reason it has taken so long is the counterculture did not make good arguments and the legalization of pot was often tied to legalization of other drugs or even all drugs.
    It is really ironic to think that the Supreme Court at the time was so very liberal yet the counterculture failed miserably at advancing any real change in our society.

    • @andrewhooper7603
      @andrewhooper7603 3 года назад +2

      If you were a member of the establishment and reasonable people were out there starting to think that there were some reasonable changes that ought to be made, and you didn't like them, it would be in your best interest to make sure those reasonable ideas are represented by absurd caricatures.
      I think Rubin was a true believer and understand why he thought his tactics would get exposure, but when you push too hard it just becomes contrived and people turn off.
      He kinda reminds me of Milo Yianopolapoopee or whatever his name is. Reasonable opposition to free speech issues on campus, unfortunately spearheaded by an inflammatory jackass.

    • @sjoncb
      @sjoncb 2 года назад

      'The War on Drugs' as Nixon coined it was actually a war on Black and Brown families. With the help of media newspaper conglamorate, Hurst arguments against hemp and The US governments role in destabilizing its own Black and Brown communities, marijuana had no chance for legalization. It wasnt until Big Pharma found several other ways to destabilize Black families while turning a profit. One of which is ADHD medication for children. Also, theres no councidence that US prison systems are privately owned for profit companies with public stocks being sold on Wallstreet. Some shareholdets include politicians as well as some being rolled into Police retitement funds. Dont believe me, go do your research. Criminalizing citizens is big business in the US.

    Whilst Rubin's correct about alcohol being bad - it is, only in large quantities, and over short duration, i.e., a bottle of vodka/day,every day, whereas a glass of wine (or vodka) per day isn.t
    He says something which is so oft-said, and so utterly dumb; in this case, it's '(pot) is natural…it's a flower'. Well, so is gasoline 'natural', or heroin, 'natural', or, asbestos, or uranium, or chlorine,or almost anything one can think of. Being 'natural' in NO way imbues something, 'automatically' with being 'good' for a person.
    Check the products in a store, which say 'all natural', guess what? A Twinkie- though it's partially hydrogenated fats, etc., they're ALL 'natural' ingredients.
    'Natural' is highly misused, and so many people - stupidly - buy into it.

It was a Monday evening and weekday traffic was heavy, with three lanes moving in each direction. One motorist swerved to miss Rubin but a second driver, immediately behind the first, struck him. He was taken to the UCLA Medical Center, where he died of a heart attack two weeks later. He is interred in the Hillside Memorial Park Cemetery in Culver City, California.

    I hate to tell you Jerry Rubin but not only is maryjane a simple agricultural product, but so is alcohol, the result of yeast digesting starchy vegetable matter. However unlike maryjane, alcohol is also made in our digestive system, by the same process that is used to make it in cooking vessels. Microorganisms in our digestive tract convert starches that we have eaten - the same starches - into alcohol. So you could say that alcohol is more a natural product for human consumption than maryjane is. Bullshit bullshit bullshit by people taking both sides of the argument. What is relevant is not WHAT you consume so much as HOW MUCH you consume. Small amounts of alcohol are harmless. Fuldheim may have been truthful when she said she doesn't get "drunk." If you consume alcohol slowly it is metabolized into harmless materials. before it gets a chance to affect your nervous system. Maryjane however is useless when eaten. It takes days to get out of your system, and it is not a pleasant experience. It is pleasant when smoked: but ANY kind of smoke is harmful to your respiratory system. The effect on your nerves from small amounts of smoked maryjane is not very harmful, but it is just awful for you if you smoke it day after day. This idea that their are good drugs and bad drugs is simplistic, and asinine. For ANY material you can find good use and bad use. Goodness and badness are descriptions of human actions, not descriptions of things.

      Alcohol, in the form which people consume as wine, liquor, or beer is a manufactured product using natural ingredients. Marijuana can literally be picked from a plant in it's natural state in the environment, and be consumed by people. So there goes your absurd little diatribe in two sentences.

    • @soilmanted
      @soilmanted 3 года назад +1

      @@luxxinterior5200 Alcohol occurs in nature and people consume it that way. For example fruit that is very ripe, including grapes, actually any sugary substance such as sugar cane, can start becoming fermented, after it drops on the ground, or while still on the vine. It becomes fermented. the same way grapes are fermented on purpose at home or in a manufacturing facility. Historically people have eaten such fruits. You can pick such fruit and get alcohol into your blood. I would say that perhaps whiskey or vodka is manufactured, in a very simple heat distillation process, but alcohol itself can be picked from the vine, the tree, or the ground, the same way as cannabis. By the way the same thing goes for opium poppies. You can pluck the fruits from wild poppy plants (Papaver somniferum) and eat the fruits, and get morphine into your system. At certain times during development of the plant there is also some morphine in the leaves and stem.
