Thalben Ball Elegy.. but I'm sight-reading!

  • We're currently traveling northern Italy and have the wonderful opportunity to visit and record several historic organs in the Bergamo and Milano region. In this video we are playing the organ at Sotto il Monte seminary church, which is a wonderful, modern instrument which has all the fun stops! And.. it is an English organ - in the middle of Italy! It features a completely modernized console, a swell division, lovely solo stops and some powerful reeds. I never would have thought to come across something like this here!
The piece featured in the video is the famous Elegy which was written / improvised by George Thalben-Ball and later transcribed and sold. I hope you'll enjoy this wonderful piece (with a tiny little accident)! I've played this piece years ago and found it again on the organ bench of this organ - so we had to give it a try!
Please let me know if you like this video style and I can show you more "behind the scenes" and traveling footage. It is so much fun to film, so I'd be happy to share more.

Dear Paul, I just love your candid, unedited videos of these beautiful instruments that you are able to play and demonstrate . Your passion for great music and appreciation for these beautiful organs touches my heart! ❤️. It takes time to explore and be well acquainted with the way different stops sound, the acoustics and general layout of the organ for perfect performance. I love your performance videos and I love your candid videos as you make comments and explore the different stops!! Don’t change anything, my friend. I love you and your videos just the way you’re doing them. I wish I could dialog back and forth as you demonstrate, because that’s how personable you make these videos!! Looking forward to more of them and also more of your personal compositions, especially in book form! I have a special shelf for Paul Fey!! Be well, Royden

Was ich an solchen Spielfehlern lustig finde ist, dass man sowas hört, ohne das Stück zu kennen, fast so als sei ein Werk nur deshalb so entstanden wie es ist, weil es gar nicht hätte anders sein können.
