GREAT video! Thanks! Just got mine off the sale. 99.9% of what I needed to problem solve was on here. Now, I lost my VFO function after my radio froze and re-initialized during manually programming a channel, I believe due to a slightly loose battery, which I solved with a simple piece of tape. The fix for that is in options going to “work or working” settings and turning VFO functions back on. And, you have to load the ID under the “digital” menu if you want to set it in the software. If you don’t have a radio ID your channels will be rejected. A little finicky but after a learning curve, it works well. Thanks again!
Hate to be critical but technically this isn't a radio review but a programming tutorial, a radio review would include technical specifications and include testing, such as hooking it up to a service monitor and/or a spectrum analyzer, I was actually looking for more of a technical review
Does this radio have the option to turn off dual mode and only display a single channel. I rarely ever use that and find that it just takes up precious space on the display.
I never understood APRS myself. I suppose in emergency uses it would be a good thing to have, like if you're stuck on a mountain or lost in the woods with out cell. I don't typically want to be found lol!
I am asked a lot about scanners. Today, I was asked about this unit as a scanner for police / fire... The person is looking for a scanner to listen to pd, fd, ... He is not a ham, or into radios at all. Other than the on / off switch, he has no idea other than $$$. Would you recommend this unit as a stand-alone scanner? I told him I run the WS-1040 , and feel it's a good unit, if he wants a scanner, buy a scanner. What do you think?
You give a thorough explanation man, but for us people who are not digital savvy what does parrot mean? What does piestar mean? How do you know what talk group to put in? Where did u come up with that 433 freq I know a talk group is a group of frequencies for like trunking. Is it parroting on that radio or your other radio
Parrot is a private talk group where you can check to see if you're making it into the network. It records whatever you say and plays it back to you. PiStar is a software used by a lot of digital hot spots that allows you to configure just about everything from what frequency to use, what digital mode, etc. As far as talk groups, there's about a million of them so you kinda have to play around and figure it out but some more popular ones are world wide 91, 93, America Link (can't remember the number). There's a way to google what talk groups are most active but I forget the website. I honestly don't use it much, but it's not hard to find. As far as the Frequency I'm using, I just picked a random one that's not being used in my area. The parroting is only going to be picked up by your radio as it's tied in with your DMR ID. But any of my radios that are connected to the parrot talk group will hear it. It's a private call so no one else will hear it. Hope that makes sense.
@@hamradiotube Wow, thank you very much. That was extremely thorough. More than I expected. You're a freaking genius man. I was trying to help a friend of mine who's gonna be doing a lot of backpacking. Not have to buy a garmen with a subscription. But you're smarter than I'll ever be
Just won this radio in the Radioddity raffle. It is APRS but the only APRS frequency that I know is 144.390. This radio is only 70cm so how do you set and APRS frequency?
Like I say in the video, I know nothing about APRS. I have found out after this that it seems to be mainly used on 2 meters. Perhaps its something that can be used over DMR to send your location, but honestly I'm so not the guy to ask about it. Congrats on the win though. I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful on this.
Thanks for the review, MIke. A bit of an odd question on this HT: I just purchased one of these and noticed an odd behavior. When the Key Tone option is enabled in the Settings menu (resulting in the production of an audible ‘beep’ when any key is pressed) on my radio, in addition to the beep, I also hear static. Have you (or other viewers) noticed this on your radio? Just trying to determine whether this is normal for this radio, or if my HT needs to be returned. Thanks & Go Wings!
10W versus 6W in turbo on UHF. We use these for our business UHF freqs with AES256. Got more of these on Prime Day for 144 bucks a piece. For ham use it’s not as competitive, but for business use where you only care about a particular band, power output, and cost, this is hands down better than the 6x2 or 878.
A few questions... Is the VFO open the entire spectrum i.e. 410-480mhz ? Can you activate the GPS to simply display your coordinates on the screen without transmitting them ? Does it cover Broadcast FM ? Thanks !
Sir I accidentally reset my radio to factory default I lost everything the only two thing I have in my setting is radio and divice info can you help out?
It's a white-label AT-D878S and is hardware limited to what it can receive. You can try (at your own risk) to unlock all bands using AT Options (google it). You can also import channels outside the band which allows you to broadcast on 2m but not receive. I tested that with my AT10G.
After doing some research on APRS it doesn't look like there's much use for APRS on this radio unless you want to do it over DMR (which I don't know if its really a thing that people do). Looks like it's more of a VHF analog thing.
You know, it's been so long and I don't do a lot of DMR. I honestly don't remember. I will tell you, HamRadio2.0 is huge into DMR and he will absolutely be able to help you way more than I ever could.

APRS: For when you have got to get found. And send text messages to people to explain the reason why you need to get found.

I don't know much more than the channel owner here... The aprs goes thru the gps... beyond that... Good luck !

Just using mine to listen to the local police & fire. They recently went DMR 400ish MHZ. It’s perfect to monitor digital DMR
So, it does what my B-Tech 6X2 does, minus VHF. Yay.
Really? That's a shame. It is a bummer that it doesn't have VHF.
Exactly. No VHF. WTH. The D878 has VHF. It's $50 more, but worth it IMO.
The BTECH 6x2 does have VHF.

Where do did you download the contact list from?
Since its basically an 878 with 2m disabled, is there a mod to enable the 2m function?
Unfortunately it's an 868 rebranded. The 868 was only a 70Cm radio.

AT-878S rebrand.
I picked up the newest 878 with all the bells and whistles. Buy once cry once.
The Anytones can be operated in U/U so what is the advantage of this rig vs. the VHF/UHF Anytone? Thanks for another great video.
There really wouldn't be any. This is just a rebranded Anyone 878U. I though it was cool that it did aprs but it turns out thats more of a VHF thing.
Scan true TS and CC?
I love my Anytone UV868. It was my first radio. This might be a good reason to upgrade. Wish it had VHF but still nice deal.
The Anytone is a much better radio.
I think Ronny might be right.
Yes, the AT has VHF. Better radio
Does DMR always sound barely readable? It sounds like they are triple masking while chewing gum.
It does have a robotic quality to it for sure. That's just the nature of it.
Great video Mike. Now for video showing, how easy it is to update your DMR location. hihi
Thanks Peter, the DMR location isn't on me I don't think. I've updated with the ARRL months ago.
@@hamradiotube Users can update details at RadioID website. Have a wonderful day and keep the vids coming.
@@peter-vk4qrp58 ahhh thanks for the info! 73

Looks like a great radio, but I wish they'd put more effort into the CPS. That's always the deal breaker for me.
Yeah, they're all kind of a PITA though. I don't think it's that bad. My temporary VHF/UHF radio has worse software.
Ok Mike another fantastic video 👍
Glad you enjoyed it
How do you obtain your DMR ID I have my gmrs ID
You know, it's been so long and I don't do a lot of DMR. I honestly don't remember. I will tell you, HamRadio2.0 is huge into DMR and he will absolutely be able to help you way more than I ever could.
I thought you could not be issued a DMR id with a GMRS license only.
To me it’s easier and way faster to program from the radio rather than from the CPS.
How do you DISABLE the alarm function??
Im waiting for a UFO mode. 😉
The mother ship is only a couple parsecs away now, so it shouldn't be much longer for the UFO mode.
Too fast
You know you can slow RUclips down in the settings?
@@hamradiotube Forgot about that, I hardly ever use that. Thanks!
@@dean-ka0trl980 No prob. Glad to help. Good luck.
