I struggled for yearsss. 15+ to be exact learning how to achieve some sort of jazz freedom on the piano. I was sick of just playing what other peopled showed me. It was like a coloring book. No matter how much freedom you had to choose colors you were still coloring other peoples pictures.
I wanted to DRAW my OWN pictures!
This podcast is taken directly from one of our lab upgrade formulas. The education contained in our lab, Launching in the next couple of weeks, will allow you to draw you own pictures.
It was give you the tools to finally achieve jazz piano freedom so you can truly express YOURSELF!

OK so here are the basic voicing "setups":
Setup 1: LH: R 7 RH: 3 +tensions
Setup 2: LH: R 3 RH: 7 +tensions
Setup 3: LH: R 10 RH: 7 +tensions (basically the same as Setup 2 but the root and third are spread out an octave

TL;DW:
The creator of the video is suggesting you create voicings from the root up, in the following fashion:
- Root at the bottom, in the range of 1-2 octaves below middle C
- Guide tones (3 and 7) shared between the right and left hand just above the root
(This 1-3-7 or 1-7-3 base constitutes a 'setup' or 'shell' of the chord)
- 5th, as well as any extensions you'd like, in any configuration above the shell
My suggestion would be to practice this without the roots at first. Practice the following, rootless, from the bottom up:
3-7-9-5
7-3-5-9
3-7-upper structure triad
7-3-upper structure triad
7-3-your own configuration of other chord tones and extensions
3-7-your own configuration of other chord tones and extensions
Once you've done this, catch the root with your left hand, as well as the first guide tone above it. Everything else, catch it with your right hand. Practice ii-V-Is, moving the guide tones as little as possible. Once you've done that, you will have achieved what this video sets out to explain.

It's really important to emphasise that comping or soloing is COMPLETELY different between having a bass player and not having one. The voicings utterly change, because you cannot get away with only implied bass lines on solo piano unless you at least occasionally include a root or a bass within your chord progressions. You need to practise both situations and develop confidence in both methods. Listen to Bill Evans playing for example "People" on solo piano and then with a bass/drums. The two approaches are markedly different.

wow i understood the concept and this in itself is very nice! But there s no application for this voicings when playing in a jam session with a bass player, right? (except for intro f.e.) Anyways.. Very nice content!
Hi Felix: thanks for watching. Different Voicings suit different purposes! To play in all settings you need to be familiar with many different voicing styles.

Do you have a good exercise for building the voicings from the melody in? What I mean is with the melody in your RH pinky and the root in your LH - then filling in the inner voices/harmony.
I have seen two of your videos on this. Episode 70 and 71. But I think it was more about exploring all the color voices, as opposed to a practice routine and organized method to do so. I could be wrong though.
Hey @canefan: great question. As far as harmonizing a melody note, your bottom LH pinky will be your root and your top RH pinky will be your melody note. In between with your thumbs fill in the quality notes of the chord (the 3rd and the 7th). With your other fingers, where applicable, you can begin to add extensions. Hope this helps!
@@jazzpianoschool Do you ever improvise melody with two handed voicing like this ? Or is it better to simply comp a chord in the LH and improvise lines in the RH ?

Just to clarify.. The dominant is a half tone below octave right? Fx. Gmaj7 is a dominant chord?
If you’re talking about the one as in octave, then the dominant is actually a whole step below the octave. Going a half step below is a major chord. So gmaj7 is a major 7 chord, not a dominant.
I don’t learn this for a while either, as my piano teacher never explained it to me.

wow this is awesome! I'm studying jazz at a school here, and I learned the rootless voicings you are showing us in the video, and also something similar to the 3 note two handed voicing you are showing, only we use 4 note two handed voicings (it's called split voicings and goes likes this: 17;35 13;79) but what you are showing is very cool to complement! and putting the rootless voicing over the shell on the left hand is a very nice strategy I never thought of doing! btw, I'm having (obviously) the same problem you were having with my combo teacher telling me not to play the root ever (he is a contra bass player ironically haha) what do you advise me to do? thank you for the video! new subescriber!

As to your question, I would suggest one of two things: rootless drop 2/middle register voicings (for ex, Cmin7: LH-BbEb, RH-GD). Or higher register voicings where you play a closed rootless voicing in your left hand and an octave/upper structure triad voicing in your right hand - for ex Cmin7: LH = Bb D Eb G, RH = F Bb D F. Hope this helps!
awesome! thank you for your answer! I didn't know about this stuff! my teacher told me that there's no such a thing as a rootless drop 2 because drop 2 voicings are mean to be used with the root, but I guess drop 2 can be aplied to any voicing you may have to open it up.
