  • I'm Creating My First Ever Rogue-like Game!
    In this Devlog 1 video we create the building blocks of what the game will be like as a playable prototype; designing new features like attacking, classes, parallaxing backgrounds, animations, particle effects, and more!
    I will be building this as a solo development project over the next 6-9 months to release a fun polished game for Steam!

      I have an idea! What if hypothetically you (character) finds a question mark card. Then it goes to your (deck). You find out it's a fire card and drag it to go on the character. (Character) then changes appearance and has a whole bunch of fire ability cards! This is just an idea!

      So this might be a little unrelated to the video but...
      What if you made a reboot of [PROTOTYPE] in pixel art?
      Imagine how James Heller and Alex Mercer would look in the visual style of Octopath Traveler.

    As a game designer i am really excited to see how the mechanics turn out to be. You chose pretty niche genres, but adding them would be fun for both the developers and the players.

    just a few class ideas
    1. Alchemist: status effect, debuff and DOT based, throws potions and could maybe combine cards or add effects to them
    2. Tank: massive health and relies on long lasting shields with low damage
    3. Pacifist: could have a mechanic to recruit enemies and make an army (e.g survive 3 turns without dealing damage to the enemy and theyll stop attacking you and join your party)
    4. Berserker: sacrifices hp for extra damage
    5. Swashbuckler: high gold gain with low damage, damage scaling off gold earned
    6. Archer: stays at a distance with low cost cards to rapid fire
    7. Gambler: massive RNG gameplay with plays corresponding to the group of cards you drew (think poker or gambit from x-men)
    8. Illusionist: taunts enemies to stun them with longer setups for high damage with low health and and defence (could have skills that deal big damage in x amount of turns and rely on taunts to stay alive until the payoff)

    Sidescroller + paralex moving one way and foreground moving one way might strain A lot on the eye brain. You should prob do some testing with that

      a lot of side scrollers have parallax backgrounds it should be perfectly fine

    Just from this simple but amazing start I can think of some interesting ideas and suggestions
    - The cloud levels should probably move at different speeds while the character runs, kind of like when you're in a car and the trees at the side of the road look like they're moving more than the clouds - this means you can add things like floating islands or other background things that make the world feel expansive with just a little change
    - In any game, shaking up things like menus can make the game feel more alive and less disconnected when you go from action to menu like how peglin uses the peg board for the area select and persona integrates the action menu into a funky, unique style - the designs are bound to change as you progress, but coming up with several unique quirks wouldn't hurt
    - For classes, you could add an ability you could get randomly rogue-like-style called multiclass, allowing you to keep most core aspects of one class and add in aspects of another such as main attack or ability to use abilities of both classes - and being able to switch classes or swap class presets would be nice in a class-based system

    small idea, what if the player changes (cosmetically) depending on how many kills, deaths and what cards you have in a run. So when you have a piled up amount of kills the player gets blood all over their stuff, but when the got a bunch of deaths they are covered in bruises. And say if you have a fireball card he'll get a orange shade in his eyes with a lizard pupil or something.

    I can already see how this game could play out and it looks exciting. Your character always running thru, having that action built up, encountering an enemy, playing some quirky card game. Sounds really nice!

    This is looking cool - I love the simplistic design!
    One thing I noticed: the background clouds move pretty fast when the camera moves. Having them move very slowly and the foreground move even faster than the red platform would make the whole scene seem more grand. It also might make the camera seem like it is "in the bushes", which might be a bit of an odd perspective. It's just a suggestion though. Keep it up!

    Tip: Make it so that the main character is aways in the middle of the screen when moving, that way people don't bump into things and possibly rage.

    have you considered adding a bit more to the design of the template? keeping it simple is important but it feels a little lacking in identity? like in peglin, another roguelike with classes built off mostly the same sprite, the default peglin is also simple and a bit basic, but it's a sort of unique design that makes the game a bit more memorable
    in comparison, this main character isn't really all too recognizable? even the accents don't do much to make it stand out as the two class hats you've shown off blend it into the design to make it look more like the hat itself (which, yeah they're awesome but they really aren't helping with the design issue) and none of them are in the body, which makes the whole thing a majority plain white, not to mention a really common silhouette of being like, two boxes (this isn't a dig against the art style or against doing similar things as others i swear)

    Is this going to be roguelike or roguelite? Because i realy hope you'll be able to have the same character trough runs and some permament upgrades. This game looks perfect for being a roguelite.

    Alright, I'm here to provide some constructive criticism on this new project! Specifically, I want to make sure you keep things from getting too big and out of control. That's what happened with Monster Tribe.
    - Okay, particles looking good. But polish needs to be one of the last things you add. You can't build a game around polish, but you can build polish around a game.
    - A class system, huh? Alright, not bad. Make sure you keep the main character design simple, so adding animations for skins will be easier. The idea of the different classes changing which cards are in your deck COULD be in danger of going too far, but you can definitely keep it under control. But be careful about saying 'completely changing how you play the game'. That COULD just be an exaggeration, but I thought I'd point it out. Regardless of what class, MAKE SURE THE BASIC GAMEPLAY LOOPS STAYS MOSTLY THE SAME. You can of course make some changes between classes, but I'd recommend keeping them small, or things could quickly get out of hand.
    - Alright, I see you only have a few classes. Good. I'd recommend 8 at the MOST, but less can definitely be more. Remember though, THE MORE DIFFERENT THE CLASSES ARE FROM EACH OTHER, THE LESS THERE SHOULD BE.
    Okay, that's all for now. Remember, DON'T GO TOO BIG.

    Pls release the source code of this game , I would try to port it into different consoles and Linux (although you may use flatpak ,the best way is via using the distros own repository which takes time and I am genuinely willing to spend that time , so please release the source code ,thanks
