People generally think that Oceania is the continent and people barely say Australia is a continent. On top of that people say that Madagascar is part of the continent Africa despite it not being connected. Same with the UK and Ireland too for Europe. Having a continent be defined by landmass makes sense but for all case and purposes is extremely confusing compared to continents just being regions of the planet.

Australia is a continental landmass that is located in the oceanic region. This is like saying the Middle East is a continent, when its just a geographical region.
I wouldn't consider the UK as in Europe, because it's an island off the coast of Europe. I wouldn't consider Iceland EU either, because it's closer to NA anyways, yet we don't claim it. Nor Madagascar as a part of a continent, because they are all islands off the coast of another continent.
In America, we don't consider Puerto Rico, or Guam a part of the continent, yet they are still US territories, in the form of islands near the country.
I get language barriers and differing educations, but it isn't hard to consider islands as separate from continents, even if they don't politically separate themselves.

A continent is a continuous land expanse. Australia is a continet, Oceania is a geographical region. They’re different but often taught as the same.
Lower levels of education often teach kids that oceania is a continent because it would confuse them because Australia is both a Continent and a Country. And given that Americans don’t do many geography classes, its probably stuck with alot of people.
Every American is taught that Australia is a continent, Xqc is from canada so blame them
