      @@Farrister Yep, that's one, although the sharp lines and inorganic atmosphere don't quite land the comfy feel like the Hull A does. The new Cutter is also kind of there but it's Drake and not exactly comfy or secure.
      I'm personally hoping for a Crusader starter ship, they have a nice blend of militaristic monochrome and some level of comfort. It looks like pretty much every manufacturer is going to have at least one, so well, fingers crossed for next year, maybe IAE 2953.

    I've putted around a lot in a Hull A over the last few cycles, and it's certainly got its own sort of charm, but I can tell you that while it's been enjoyable, two things it hasn't been are especially profitable or efficient. The Hull A is the only small ship other than the MPUV that struggles to escape atmosphere under planetary gravity conditions. On moons and in space it's fine, but I'd half-expect the Hull A's big sister, the Starfarer, to beat it in a race from Area 18 to Baijini point. That, plus the weak deceleration and maneuvering thrusters, mean you have to take more time, and more care, landing -anywhere-, not just in a top-down hangar. Most Hull A pilots I've known have eschewed the creature comforts eventually, returning to their old favorites.
    That being said, I CAN think of a very specific, but also very general, place that the Hull A serves particularly well -- it makes a great (and cheap) companion ship for someone who regularly works out of a particular base of operations, particularly in support of a small mining or salvage operation. Its cargo capacity is just about right to collect the refined output of three low-intensity, non-quantanium Prospector runs, for instance, and it provides some internal gear storage and amenities that a mercenary, either space-borne OR on foot, will find particularly helpful. In the future, I can see it also being quite helpful working in tandem with, say, a solo salvager, since the Vulture's cargo capacity (like the Prospector's!) means it can't stay out doing its job very long without someone else to carry the output.

    • @Farrister
      @Farrister  2 года назад +1

      Great notes Billy, and good point about the 2x Prospector runs! (I know you said 3, but I'm a quanta hoarder these days xD)

    Great little ship! I love the new MISC design language. I’ve got an A, B and C in my hangar. The A is a bit too lean on scu for real profitability, so as soon as it’s available I’ll melt it in favor of the B for planet side ops.
    If I could change one thing about the A, it would be to rotate the exterior door control pad 90 degrees so that it faces inward towards the component area, I have to do a weird little j turn to access it when approaching from the cockpit. Speaking of the cockpit, glass below the dash serves no use for the pilot since the dash blocks it entirely and actually makes it easier to see into the cockpit, not out. I’d rather replace the glass with metal.

    • @QuickStudy4
      @QuickStudy4 2 года назад

    Nice review of the Hull A Farrister. It looks like a nice ship, and I know there have been a few people waiting patiently for it. I have to say, that it's not a ship that I'm interested in. Large scale cargo running isn't my cup of tea. I also know that the Caterpillar carries more, and has been available longer. The Hull A is a pretty small ship in comparison, and I believe there are other ships available that are bigger and more diverse in their capabilities. In fact, I think my Carrack will carry more cargo in it's pods. Oh well. You still did a great job on the review. Take care, fly safe, and I'll see you in the verse.

    Heya Farrister, hope you're doing well. Well done as always :)
    I think the Hull A is a nice little cargo ship, but she's definitely missing the ability to properly defend herself, and if the pilot is reliant on using her exclusively for in game income, they would be wise to seek out at least one escort to protect the ship and her cargo. But, that will cut into the profitability of the ship, so I wonder if, in the end, the Hull A isn't a great investment. Perhaps move up to a Freelancer ASAP, as it can defend itself pretty well, as can a Cutlass Black.

    • @jono9721
      @jono9721 2 года назад

      I think eventually this will be fixed when we have proper cargo contracts, pirates won't risk the crimestat/rep for a smaller cargo ship carrying essential goods. I can see boring contracts like trash/food/etc where the transport of the goods is more important than the cost of the goods themselves. Whereas well defended cargo ships will make money delivering higher risk goods (weapons/meds/etc).
      Maybe trading could be made less risky as well by being able to purchase cargo insurance or maybe rent an npc escort.

    • @hanswurst9866
      @hanswurst9866 2 года назад +2

      @@jono9721 True, the only actual cargo mission is the nine tails blockade which happens every 3 months or so and then it's only occurring a few times on a special schedule and with a strict time limit. I do wonder how the entry into the Hull A will have to be modified to be a docking collar since, like the Freelancer, the ladder blocks entry into and out of the ship when not extended to climb into the ship. I am looking forward to seeing the Hull C when it finally comes out and my Hull D at some point, but I think having proper space hauler missions needs to be implemented first... missions that require having a certain amount of cargo space, you fly to the pickup location, load up the cargo, and are given a destination on where to deliver before getting paid. To add complexity, if you have the cargo space, being able to pickup multiple missions and different cargo from each until your ship is as full as it can be before going to each of the drop-off points.. maybe adding timers for certain missions needing higher priority or to force time management if you plan to try doing multiple cargo missions at the same time. The box carrier missions are ok, but more for intro to cargo than the space semi truck drivers wanting to move a lot more without only having to the option to buy the cargo and resell it somewhere else.

    i like what they're doing with these ships now. The Cutter doesn't fly like other small ships. It basically handles exactly like a slower Cutlass. Hull A doesn't handle anything like a ship it's size should. Fly's like the raft, and probably larger hulls. The starter ship skills will actually transfer over to the next step up. As of now there's a jarring change for new players going from the starter ships to the mid-size types. I think they really started this with the 100 series, perfect training for the quicker next-steps like the Avenger and 300 series.

    People said that it flies like a brick and I didn't expect it to fly like 100i, of course, but it really is a brick. It has awful acceleration and breaking, and it gets worse with cargo ramp extended. It's a little weird for its size.
    The other thing I liked about it from the reviews is a cozy interior, with proper living area, not a corridor with a bed. And again, it's kinda nice, but it's all scratched, paint chipped. You buy a brand new shiny ship and it looks like people lived there for 20 years.

    For me - if you only wanted to ship cargo - and the Hull A was available as a starter package it would be a clear winner amongst the other starter packages, but its real money price needs to come down 30% - 40% to be attractive. Otherwise (as you say), comparing its length when carrying cargo, you have the slightly more expensive Freelancer - obviously it has a broader beam but you can probably land it in similar places, and it has more optionality (box carrying, combat, multi-player). For a little more real world money, and a similar length again, you have the RAFT and MAX!
    I think the Hull B is far more interesting (for only 50 ish % more money than Hull A). It's a similar length to the more expensive Corsair and Taurus but is cheaper than the MAX, and it has all that cargo capacity.
    TLDR: for me, as much as I like the looks of the Hull A, it's way overpriced, isn't a starter package, and is outperformed by the superior Freelancer at only $20 more. The Freelancer would give you more gameplay opportunities and multi-player, and you'd probably be able to stick with it longer. But then, the in-game price (when we know it) may make the Hull A a competitive step up from a starter package.

    They need to get back in touch with their Freelancer roots, That was a real traders dream, buying cargo cheap and flying it to the other side of the universe through dozens of systems for massive profit, if you survived and of course im also refering to Discovery Freelancer which added the multiplayer and is still going today :). The only things that bother me are that the escape pod is one the same side of the door, so theoretically with the door open it could not be ejected, they should have reversed the position of the bed and the kitchen. Also they should really implement a variable of mobility and speed based on the cargo carried, a ship like this closed and empty should be much more maneuverable

    Where I could see the Hull A thrive is in combination with one or two Prospectors. When mineral containers are finally fully functional, the Hull A has the perfect size to collect them and bring them to the refinery. But to be really used as a cargo hauler, the price has to be adapted. For only 300k aUEC or $20 more, the Freelancer is the more versatile ship. I think somewhat around 900k aUEC would be far more attractive.

      You know how the usual route of advice for new players is, buy Aurora or Mustang, earn enough in game money for Titan or just upgrade to it with real money. Then from there next usual goal is Cutlass Black and after that depends on what you want to do.
      Well with Cutter I don't really see the point of wasting money on a Titan or a Cutlass, neither of them are great for VHRT bounties while doing Mercenary bunker jobs, depending on a rank you can earn 60K or 75k or even more I just didn't get to that rank yet. And it can be done just with basic undersuit and gun. And it pays more than VHRT bounty with less effort.
