Some people will want this small house, and with the building industry making mansions for the one percent. He knows more about history of architecture and uses it to get small structures for whoever wants one. I like listening to his references for history, and how he uses the past to help create the future! Form fallows funtion !!!!😎😎😁
This is amazing great job! These would be great paired with some type of cruise/barge community. Being able to take these around the world and live in different countries temporarily would be sweet!
This guy did a good job with the container, I also liked his prefab homes. I like it when I see containers done well, but I worry about the growing inequality in society and lack of affordable homes in general. The architect certainly has a lot of enthusiasm and good ideas.
I like it!! Where they have the bench, I would put a hall table or console with a mini fridge underneath so you could still keep snacks and drinks in there... plus an electric kettle, because I can’t live without my cups of tea lol. Would work brilliant in the space.
Kirsten, thanks again for your work spreading knowledge and info. Every video has at least something useful! (Often, they have multiple key concepts to consider.)
There's the insulated containers are better choice. The square hole from the refrigeration systems makes good equipment routing easy. Stainless interior makes for clean inviroments. Good Job St Paul, from mild climate Pacific NW.
Wow really nice! I liked that he talked about the locality hindering innovation. It would be great to dive more into these legalities by doing interviews with architects, house owners, lobbyists for construction industry and city council people. Then contrast it with normal people just saying "I'd love to be able to afford a house". I guess on one hand this would cost millions of jobs if construction would ever be truly industrialized, but it does make an essential item for living almost prohibitively expensive for many people today. Another problem is the cost of land development - the bureaucracy is artificially inflating land prices in many ways. There is enough land for everyone, but it's walled off in expensive processes. BTW in Europe there is an alternative to containers - swap bodies that are a little bit wider (255cm instead of 240cm, 11cm more width internally) (called UTI Caisse mobile / BDF Wechselaufbau / Wissellaadbak / Växelflak)
I live in a tiny home & it's quite small, but you go inside & there are ways to make storage & such & make it look bigger, even for the size of the outside...You can go inside & still feel like it's a homey environment...I know this is a hotel, but for me (& I love tiny homes), he made a small area seem even smaller & he didn't even have much in the room. There are ways to not feel like you are sleeping in a box (more windows for example)...I didn't hate it, but there are ways to make the place seem bigger, even in a small space like that. For me, the bed didn't need to be the whole room. I know it was a hotel room, but maybe give the room some levels & things artistically other than just a straight shot type of square deal. Give the eyes some curves & levels to look at perhaps. It need not all be huge & square, just cause the container is square. There were a ton of artistic possibilities...especially since the guy made houses & knew how to design creative bedrooms, I'm sure...I TOTALLY would love to have a shipping container mint home, but this was just, for me, only made me think of what they could of done with the space & NOT what they did with the space...That's just one person's humble opinion. 😃🌈✌🙏
I can't believe I watched the whole thing (this particular one) but it did get a little more interesting as time went on...Talking about the other builds & all. ✌🙏
Beautifukl space and video. I work for a design and fabrication company. We repurpose shipping containers into pop up shops, and it's soooo much work. I love the idea, and the corregation aesthetic, but now that i have experienced it first hand, it seems like more trouble than its worth. Once you cut holes into the corregation they bend like jell-o.
Esto es el futuro definitivamente! Creo que ninguno de nosotros que en este momento estamos viendo el video va a vivir lo suficientemente pero, si vas a vivir en una ciudad, esta será la única manera posible This is the future definitely! I think that none of us who are currently watching the video will live long enough, but if you are going to live in a city, this will be the only possible way
Julian Esteban Ejeje! Tal vez tengas razón, pero nadie le aviso a mi prima Yolanda sobre el control de natalidad que ya lleva 11 chamacos y contando!! Saludos!!.
This is a great concept. The concept could apply and be adaptable to housing the homeless. Funny how the simplest designs really grab you and are so useful
I am a retired sailor and construction worker, I've been used to seeing those containers in use as tool cribs and work shops since pre 1980. I don't understand the benefits of using one of these builds over a travel trailer or mobile home. I do like them and really like the idea that you can actually bury them in a hillside but to use them with wheels makes me think a travel trailer is a much better idea and cheaper too.
In this present moment I am debating if I'm going to go with this or not. I just purchased a 20 feet cargo trailer in a magnificent condition. I am blessed enough to have sufficient land to set it. My thing is the permits cuz I am in Orange County Florida. I'll be praying about it.
WOW, thanks for sharing. Now imagine using these containers like legos-- stack upright for elevator shafts to get to 2nd & 3rd floor to an excavated basement (OR country septic tank(tiled?)
Great work and idea! St. Paul is a cold and a depressing place to live in the winter! My car was broken down one year in -10F not counting the wind factor and if not for the great people of your city I would have had some serious medical issues or death! This is not a place to work, retire or live unless you are young and healthy! Make the money and get out as fast as you can!
I think it's a great idea. I love my RV, even though a lot of cities (wouldn't doubt if the hotel industry is behind this) are working to shut RV parks down. Regardless, I think RV parks or RV resorts are making a comeback.
Tina Gallagher In my city, they won't allow a person to build a tiny house in the city limits. A person can leave a dumpster in their driveway for 6 month, but you can't build a house on your property.
I'd bet the homeless folks living in the woods behind the (wee) house at the community garden, would love to have even that much of a place to live. I live in a house just a few long blocks north of there. I think I remember seeing that thing around and wondering what it was for. Very good design and quality workmanship.
Its nice enough looking and nice and solid! But one thing I hate is having to struggle to change the sheets on a bed - If I cant stand or kneel beside the bed to do that function, it just is not for me. Cheers, Patrick
The shipping containers design is a modular system. That is part of their beauty. One of the main reasons why we find modules so appealing is because they are an integral part of Nature. Nature with a capital N as Frank Lloyd Wright use to love to say.
One problem I see with these mobile shipping container homes is they could not be fixed into one place. People could move in quickly and help grow a city quickly...but they could just as easily leave and take all that growth with them.. That's scary to most city's and they don't like the idea a portion of there tax base can run off leaving a empty print of where they where things go south. That is why mobile home community are really frowned on and in most places they are just now allowed, and there was push that ended up making a trailer park, a hold space for convicts.. The hotel authority of city's also hates there idea you can bring your home with you.. they want to monopolize the ability for people to come and visit for a few days with a hotel room if they can and do pull in much more money for a city then a RV park can. the only way I see this possibly ending well is if a major hotel is able to start chain of micro hotel spaces.. Its not a bad idea.. but I really wonder if the power that can stop it will ever allow it when a conventional home insure people will get stuck in a the space longer and require more effort to leave.
Israel Harris the idea with innovation is that, old will hate new.. and on this scale, most likely disagree because it will take away, but won't completely kill off the hotel industry.. The initial cost to setup, unless you plan on occupying it would be quite a substantial packet. In all honesty.. makes me want to buy a plot of land and build a caravan park. As for fixing these to one spot.. Yeah you can.. use a box foundation.. Allows for maintenance and support..
I think this sort of thing has vary limited usage.. and would hate for this to be the entry level into home ownership. If this really was the most entry level home a person could buy, then we have to reinvent our whole sewage system for city and towns to deal with grey water tanks and the emptying of toilet cartridges.. the is also the sort of thing that a apartment almost universally does better.... The builder from Alchemy design does also admit this kind of thing really is a compromise and more of the sort of thing to showcase there creativity.. and that is fine in itself. Really what Is great the builder then goes and make a actual wee house that resolves all the issues this creates by using a using a shipping container for a house, and then shows you what is possible if you don't make that kind of compromise or wish for the bloody box to be portable.. and that is the solution I think which is going to be far more like to work as a residence, and not be so fight-able by any industry since the industry can choose to invest idea.
Reminds me of sardines in a can i dont see shipping containers or any Tiny home being safe. Even with a security system. Burglars and what happen when storms come and tornadoes, floods, tsunami, ect. It would be nice to have motors put underneath in case of a flood. Then it could be a boat as well then you can save your home. Even if the highways flooded with a. Another solution is called "Beddys". It's kind of a cross between a sleeping bag and regular bedding. Not sure, but I think Beddys would work. Or is it Beddies?
Those considering container structures should not get excited (which interferes with clear thinking) then study everything about them intensively. Then copy proven success. The little standard height 20-footers are cute and cute shapes look much better in photographs than in person so spend some time INSIDE containers. Only the High Cube versions are worth building with and only use one-trip or at worst cargo ready grade boxes because the crap WWT grades were withdrawn from trade service due to damage and almost always bad end door gaskets. Containers are shells and become buildings when modified. I recommend building your first (I have four, two welded side-by-side as a machine shop) as a workshop before choosing to live in one because while a steel fabricator, weldor or anyone genuinely used to industrial space (see Andrew Camaratta) will have relevant experience some giddy non-professional will have to learn the hard way. Get familiar with industrial sealants, insulation roofing and more.
This is super cool but for myself I would prefer one that was either longer like a 40'+ container or one that could expand to the sides like a wing house or many of the other ones that are similar that transform and basically become 3x the width potentially but if you could get one that was double + the length of this that could also expand to 3x the width that would be even better and still have it portable!

Low cost high proffts with maxing the space great idea hope you every success this is the way forward in the future for its sustainable.
These are freaking cool I want to see them all over the country thanks for sharing, damn codes and zones
Bloody awesome - thinking, design and making to the space, the cost the need - wonderful video - thank you
LOVE the incorporation of word art.
Kirsten:
Merci, gracias, shukran, grazi, thank you a thousand times.
And дякую (Ukrainian)
love everything about his ideas.. i have been looking for an architect like him.. thank you Kirsten!

Valley girl for sure! Fab architectural concepts of design that touch on many human needs!

awesome architect, presented exceptionally by Ms Dirksen

Unique idea with using the City as the theme process of uniqueness of each area we live in etc. 👍👍👍❣️
I'm loving the wooden models...
Thank you Kirsten
always enjoy your videos, you never fail in finding the utmost interesting places
Did he just say that in 2002, 3d modeling and computers wasn't really a deal? That comment leaves me scratching my head, big time.
A very cool tiny house. Awesome! Greetings from Andreas on Off Grid Sweden
I like the idea of what you envision.
I like his no nonsense attitude

that urine tank better never leak, or it really will be a "wee home" - otherwise love it!
Best comment yet.
the Lux will Sux
I have never seen scissor jacks that big wow!!
i would love to pick that guy's brain about the heating/plumbing systems they put in the modular housing. pretty dang cool.
I agree, he seems like an extraordinarily crafty guy
seriously very very cool. and seemingly efficient. - good to see the complexity hidden to enjoy the simplicity of it all.
Love it wish I had one out here in country one person and I don’t have a storm cellar it looks like that storm worthy Great job absolutely love it

marzy Marrz wow what an original idea
Nice vid. Glad the creator of the (now classic?) weeHouse is still experimenting.
Awesome tiny houses🌺🐞

BEAUTIFUL TINY HOME
I would love a tiny jem home. Goals!
It was an amazing idea to put it near a train station!
Terrific presentation. Neat video!
Beautiful minimalist
Awesome to see this near the Guthrie Theater and the Old Mills District. Wonderful piece!
Wow 😳THIS IS A REALLY GREAT 👍 IDEA 💡🤗🤗🤗 I would like to get involved in this in Indiana!
That is the coolest thing I've ever seen
A bed and bath on wheels is normally called an RV and the rules around them are quite well developed.
this is what i'm looking to build for myself

Fantastic program. Thanks for sharing it.
Those stairs on porch ideal for tinyhouse loft bedroom or loft living room. Hello from Sioux Falls South Dakota
I didn't know it's common to have wet bathroom in Europe. Anyway, awesome tiny space!
Great video awesome ideas

Very nice house

Great information on container building.
Looks like a very nice room to rent.
just 75$ a night, wee!
Very nice. ✌🤘👍❤

A bit too minimal for me. But conceptually this guy is like an idea factory.
I just got my container from Wuwi Shipping Container very cheap and even paid it upon delivery.

very classy. Did he say how much it cost to build? pretty high end
good job for completing your project. I would give this a B in total, the complete finishes are nice, back patio is a good idea. The bed design with utility panel next to it is sloppy. I can imagine the electrician/plumber getting muddy boots all over the bed while fixing something, a lot of wasted space. A+ on the bathroom though! Looking forward to the next attempt! Keep it up.
I wish someone would recreate the apartments from 5th element
yup
Tell the signmaker "Kuuma jalat" is wrong. The correct form for that expression would be "Kuumat jalat". However that's probably not what you meant the label to say. TheAppelsiini123 what language is this from?
That is Finnish. What an amazing, beautiful language.
Kiitos kiitos kiitos, olin tulossa sanoo samaa
I thought it was super funny, though! Why Finnish? And if you are using Finnish why not ask someone how to spell this. Theres big Finnish influence in Minnesota, lots of Saunas.
cool house...but at $125k there are many more affordable alternatives.
Nice details. However, the Finnish “warm feet” is completely wrong. That doesn’t mean really anything. First off kuuma is not warm, it’s hot. And even if you wanted to say hot feet, it would have to be kuumat jalat. Warm feet is lämpimät jalat.

While I understand the concept of it being kind of a luxurious hotel room for the city. I personally wouldn't like it, I think it feels too cramped and uncomfortable, having a nice luxurious shower and sink in such a tiny space doesn't make too much sense. I've seen people doing van life with more limited space making a better use of limited space. Replacing that bed with a murphy bed would make the space feel more spacious and it would make it more dynamic and in my opinion better to live
All his best structures were the rusted and textured exterior ones! Not that grey one, despite the inside being swell.
What would you use to tow and how much when you travel?
We're full of of libs up here. Dictating:(
Great video as always, I love this channel.
This wold be an elegant retirement home and if you need to go to hospital you get a semi to come and cart you and your home to medical care and it’s cheaper than an ambulance in the good ole USA!
Aesthetic Sublime
Even a hotel room has a microwave, fridge, coffeemaker, and a TV. This is beautiful but lacking for overnight guests.
Good point, but that'll depend on the guest. I never use those items because when visiting a city I only use the hotel room for sleeping, but am stuck with insane hotel costs downtown in cities. A minimalistic hotel, that's clean and safe and affordable and decent location, would be very appealing. (Those last two are probably mutually exclusive, unfortunately.)
You should never use a coffee maker in a hotel.. trust me people do some unthinking things in those ..
Kent VanderVelden yeah downtown Chicago 250 for a room .. for Nice hotel .. added up quick when you stay for a few weeks at a time
I’m from around the Twin Cities and am Finnish. This is fascinating. Where would I find more info on this builder?
I remember living in them in Iraq with a/c and just a bed in them and we add TV , ice box...
Perhaps perverse, but of course it's what everyone will wonder... "Yes, but how does your toilet works?" :)
for about $ 1500.00 it better wipe to.
The unit appears to require people to step up. To me it suggests that there is a holding tank that will require draining. IE the ideal place to park this would be a camp ground.
Kent VanderVelden when your gay and have a partner, you don't need toilet paper after poopie...think 69
