I enjoyed the video. I find it interesting when people react to large culturally-significant forms of media. On the one hand, there is a joyous celebration and shared fantasy with respect to Star Wars. On the other, there is a somehow inflated expectation of the franchise to both surprise and satisfy. The original Star Wars movies have flaws, they are simplistic and oftentimes heavy-handed. They also have charisma and fun. They are not philosophically complex, nor do they challenge their viewer with experimentation in the filmic world. I think the failures of the contemporary Star Wars films are actually related to the rather pedestrian fact that Star Wars is NOT complicated, it does NOT have variety in terms of storytelling. Both J.J. and Rian were handed a very limited space opera world and they either replicated the only thing they knew (Force Awakens) or tried something different and surprising (Last Jedi). Both of these attempts failed, but I struggle to think how they could have possibly succeeded.

ha it's funny to stumble on this video and comment, but I feel compelled to reply. The answer to your struggle, I believe, lies with all of the expanded material that has compiled over the years.
I agree with your thought that the original films are not exactly complex, nor without their problems. There were many factors that went into the original trilogy becoming so special (innovation, telling the Hero's Journey through a sci-fi-ish setting, the Taoist influence on the Jedi concept).
But while the world may have been limited to some degree, there are seeds of inspiration there to be planted. And many, many quality writers over the last few decades have done this. So many powerful SW books that explore the world, by writers who have taken the time and care to do it right. In a sense, it is the inspiration that SW generated in so many creative minds that made it larger than the original films.
Disney should've leaned into this golden chest of material (ironically, as they have with Marvel). Instead, they did the opposite. Lots of possible reasons why, but who truly knows. It's a shame - they truly could've built magnificent.

5:28 "The writing is great..." Are you serious, did I not hear you right or was that just a blip? The writing is everything that is wrong with Disney Star Wars 😂
