- This is NOT an original SH story by Sir A.C. Doyle, but one written by Peter Tremayne, which somewhat enlightens us on WHERE Holmes is actually coming from, and WHAT triggered him to become the world's first and most famous consulting detective!
I tried to contact the publishers of the book in which this remarkable story is to be found - "The Mammoth Book of New Sherlock Holmes Adventures" by Carroll&Graf Publishers, Inc. 1997 - but they are no longer in existence. However, I was able to get permission from the successor - The Perseus Books Group. Thank you very much indeed!!

I heard this some time ago & enjoyed the story. What I liked even more was the copy of the picture called "Liverpool from Wapping" by John Atkinson Grimshaw.
From time to time I come back to your readings as I really enjoy them. Any chance at a new publish or two of these “further” adventures? 😊

Have you any idea where/what the painting is from? My grandmother has a copy of it hanging on her wall and I'd be fascinated to know where it came from.

It is the cover of the book I am reading from :-) It is called "Liverpool Docks" and was painted by John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836 - 93).
A good addition to the classic tales. Pronunciation of certain words a little off- kilter though. The painting looks like those of Atkinson Grimshaw. Famous for wet lamplit streets.
Yes, it definitely is one of his. I have seen it labelled Street Scene by a German seller of prints of artworks but I believe the correct title is The Custom House, Liverpool. I have also seen it on sale titles "Liverpool from Wapping".
I really enjoyed listening to this, thank you. A simple tale but a very enjoyable one, and I thought the whole thing was very close to the "AC Doyle Style" so well done! Yes as others have said, some of your words are mispronounced, which I know can grate on the ear for some people, but OTOH your characters' voices were great - really believable. I wish I could do that!

I am an old lady who loves old men that enjoy old literature and is emerged with Bubble Shoot for hours per day.

An enjoyable narration. Thank you.
Some points to consider:
1. ACD mentioned holmes gets his flair for showmanship due to his gallic ancestors.
2. Also moriarty is said to have fallen in love with the wife of one of his associates. That event was the catalyst for his downfall.
3. Holmes himself once got engaged, albeit only to gain both information and access for his case.
OMG! This voice drove the mad! I couldn't get through 5 minutes!

Am I to under stand that Holmes' former companion is in prison because he declined to service a client in whatever field, because the party dwelt in those social circles which require secrecy and anonymity due to its questionable moral nature? Quite right!

I don't remember AC Doyle ever mentioning that Holmes was born in Ireland. Surely, he would have mentioned that in some of his stories, I would think. You do read well, and I like your voice, but you're not Waglund or Stanhope. I will have to hear more to solidify my opinion of your stories. I hope you understand. September 8 2021. Mr. Treymane, your practice of ending sentences with prepositions is not in the ACD style at all. It is clever and appreciated to write prequel stories about Holmes. I fully appreciated ACD's style of correct English grammar and his narratives were more my favorites because of the penchant. Thanks.

I do wish the reader wouldn't emphasize every word so hard. It's grating. A calm, modulated tone is much more listenable. But at least he's trying...I like audio books. I especially like this painting (Grimshaw?) It's perfect!
I like these non original stories but this drove me crazy. Galway is pronounced Gawl-(rhymes with ball)way. It's a very famous place. I can only wonder what would happen if they were asked to pronounce 'A nightingale sang in Berkeley Square'

If it's not Arthur Conan Doyle it's not Sherlock Holmes.
Advertisements break in every several minutes, very distracting, and greatly reduce enjoyment of the story.
That is really weird, as I do not monetize and actually have advertisements turned off. Let me investigate.
I LOVE the painting. But I find it too bad the reader whom I suppose is German REALLY does not speak English FLUIDLY.. as well-meant as it might be, he (in technical sense) is just not up to the job and it would take a long, long time to get there. As it is, he expresses every word too forcefully, and of several doesn't know how to pronounce several of them. For instance, the Irish city is pronounced as "Golway", not with an "ah" nor with an "eh" sound. Viceroy is not pronounced "visseroy" but "vaisroy".
Haha.... I am half German, half American. I grew up in California, then spent a few months in Wales. So I do speak SOME kind of English fluently - but naturally struggle with some of the older/old school words. We did not have Viceroys in the US :-) Still, just doing this for fun. And if you enjoy the story and get a laugh out of a few words, that's fine with me.
@@pikewerfer I actually prefer your reading to many of the British narrators reading SH stories on RUclips, and I went to university in England, so take that for what it's worth. Thanks so much for doing these. I'd love to hear more.

The reader really should have learnt how to pronounce English correctly before embarking on this reading! As it is, it is totally unlistenable!
The reader's mistakes in pronunciation make it too irritating to listen this recording: modicum, narrated, Maynooth and Galway are all mistreated in just the first three minutes...

I can't stand this readers voice and his mispronounciations , therefore I will never listen to your site again.

The pronunciation is rediculas. Clearly an American try to speak English. And failing.
The spelling is ridiculous. Clearly, a Brit trying to write English. And failing. ;-) I am half American, half German, by the way. Lived in Wales for a while. And yes, words I am unfamiliar with most probably sound strange. This is a recording-in-one-go thing where there is no practice. So things like that happen :-D Some people like it. Some do not. Feel free to not like. :-)
