You mean Biden when Florida has no money to do a damn thing by it self , its a welfare state , dependent of federal government every time there is a hurricane .
Amazing how?? It this the same state that the governor and other offical spent 12 million dollars to fly undocumented immigrants to Martha's Vineyard? It seems like money wasted and that could have been used to help people in need during this storm or something more production.
its interesting to me. most people mention pets as a reason they didnt leave. wouls pet friendly shelters encorage more people to get out of danger zones?
Not all pet shelters are pet friendly. And once those fill up, people are either faced with a choice to abandon their pets for their own safety or take the risk.
I live in southwest florida and we don't tend to leave because #1, there is no guarentee you can find enough gas to get out of the state and people have been stranded - even if you fill up before the storm you can't get out on one tank #2 work, pets and grandma and #3 the storm path changes and if you go the opposite direction or even to another state, I know people that ended up in the path of the storm anyway, and good luck finding a hotel room. At least at home you know you have food, water, shelter and you willbe fine with a level 1, 2 or 3 and have left for nothing, unless it's a level 4 or 5 then you are screwed and need to get to a shelter. It's a waiting game and about calculated risks. We have tremendous relief where I am that the storm hit south of us and turned right but my heart is heavy for those negatively affected.

@@DreamingInTechnicolor I live in a cyclone prone area. In the last 30 years we have had one fatality due to our massive cat 5 tropical storms - some migrant from the cities who didn't realise running a petrol engine generator in the same room he was sleeping in might be a bad idea. During Cyclone Yasi (one of the largest and most destructive tropical storms in history) we actually had a net gain since two babies were born at the height of the storm. How do we have a zero fatality rate from the same kind of storms that killed thousands of americans in the same timeframe? Simple. we're not stupid. People in low lying areas go to shelters. People in high areas give shelter. Then again we also wore masks during covid so I'm comparing apples to -oranges- morons.
@@dawggonevidz9140 That still has little to do with my comment. I’m only addressing the reason some people stated why they stayed. (As a kid) I’ve been through one hurricane, one tornado that hit our home, straight line winds that messed up our home, and a winter storm that left us without electricity for almost a month… My parents made arrangements, well before any emergency situation, to have locations designated to either drop off our pets or places we could go as a family unit that would accept our pets. The storms I listed were surprise hits. No warning we’re given, and the damage to our home wasn’t life threatening. So we stayed while FEMA and relatives drove to our location to document damage and help start on repairs. I think we all respond to Catastrophic events differently. Although I might not agree with someone, I’m just not going to disrespect them. I think that people should educate themselves on what shelters are available during certain events and their policies when it comes to animals. Its my understanding that there are a small number of evacuation centers that will take pets as long as they are kept in carriers.
A home is most people biggest purchase, but materialistic things can always, always be replaced. It took me years of hard, rejection, and sacrifice to be able to afford my home. This is the type of people that stay when there’s a fire and the smoke is covering everything and they’re like I’m not gonna go I’m gonna stay that’s the stupidest thing you can go do you really need to go! It only gets worse and then it’s too late.
I've evacuated several times for Hurricanes. It's expensive, hard to do with pets, and sometimes is least logical choice depending on roadways, number of motorists leaving at same time, whether you can find a place to go, or a whole host of other problems evacuating presents. It's sensible if you can do it, but it's hard to do in a large peninsula like Florida with as many residents and limited number of roads to get out. People say flippantly oh why didn't people just evacuate as if that didn't occur to them. It isn't as cut and dry as people think. I've done it several times and it's always at least a quick thousand when I add up all the costs and think to yourself does everyone have enough funds to leave that easily and with jobs, pets, and kids. Trust me you never know what it's like until you are in that situation. I'm glad for people who could and do. I just don't assume those who don't aren't being responsible. They may have some mitigating reason why they stay home. Storm shelters help, but they get packed to.
Storm shelters can always squeeze you in so ... I don't get that. I do get not wanting to evacuate. I never do. I lived in a mobile home for a year or 2 and we did totally evacuate that. Depends where you live and what you live in and your windows or shutters and elevation. Don Lemon is a moron whether it's a cat 4 or a trop storm. Still a dope.
coouldnt you just drive out of state with a tent, tell the kids your going camping and camp out for a couple weeks thats like 50 bucks roght there 170 if you need to buy the tent
It’s funny, it’s usually people wearing these shirts that are the ones spewing out the vilest hatred at protests where other people don’t agree with their opinions.
I moved out of Florida a year ago and from the Orlando area. I wouldn’t have gone either because hurricanes almost never hit the center of the state. By the time you know it will, it’s too late to get out and you’re trapped in your car on a highway. That said, my old house 20 minutes north of Orlando is 100% safe with zero flooding. You just never know what’s going to happen.
They are all just cool as cucumbers about the whole situation. As a south Floridian, I can tell you that I sat in my car for 20 hours evacuating north for Irma back in '17, and it was pretty brutal, but for me, better safe than sorry. I'm sure that I'd do it again if I had to.
I just cant imagine placing value on property over life. Regardless if you leave, your shit will end up how it will end up. Your life however, is more precious.
@@beanseason6515 😆... I don't think so. But since I don't know you personally, that's only a guess, I could be wrong. I don't like to see good people suffer, and even, with a few exceptions, some of the bad ones. My job before I retired, required rescuing people, mostly water rescues in dangerous situations. Lots of times they were warned before they got in their predicament, but were too hardheaded to listen. But I still risked my life, helping those idiots, just like I did the ones that were caught unawares. Most of the time, the dumbasses that didn't listen, learned their lesson, and were grateful and apologized for not taking our advice. Not all did though. Some people are just lifetime assholes I guess.
The mentality of risking your kids doesn't make alot of sense. This flooding will definitely increase insurance costs and new homes to be built elevated inthese areas.
People don’t understand there is no effective insurance. I was in a Cat 4. When all is said and done you have to pay to rebuild your home and then the insurance company reimburses you. That means you just lost your home, probably out of work and you have to pay out of your own pocket while also paying to rent a place for several years while they rebuild. Don’t let anyone tell you any different. If you have experienced this you know truth. I would never again have insurance after we lost our home in Irma, except we are forced to have it.

A day after we came back, the flood waters came up and washed out roads, land-locking communities for 2-3 weeks. My biggest concern was dirtbags robbing houses after the storm, knowing people evacuated. If politicians and society didn't encourage criminals to rob people, that could be one problem resolved. People don’t realize the path of the storm was so uncertain up until about 10 hours before landfall. My family in ft Myers we’re still working their jobs Wednesday afternoon before being able to go out and find food and water. They didn’t expect to have to evacuate since the storm was supposed to head more north towards the panhandle. The highways and interstate was already bumper to bumper. Where would they go? Who wants to sit in traffic during a storm when you can be at home with what you need and most people have boats or know of someone or neighbor who can help them. Hurricanes aren’t new to Florida. The storm was projected to be a tropical storm level by the time it got to central Florida so I get why they decided to ride it out.
@@patriciatennyson6557 Well that exactly my point, most of the people who fled the west coast to the central and east coast to evade the storm got hit anyways. Now most likely can’t get back home until the roads clear. Sometimes it makes more sense to stay if you can manage.
Thank you!! The only place that evacuated on time was FCGU. A friend was forced to evacuate and come back to Tampa and was upset because that meant going straight into the storm but turns out she got lucky!

The decision to stay or flee, or where to flee, is like playing a game of "dodge ball." Sometimes, you'll flee to where the hurricane ends up going. The new owners do not seem to share what CNN has always been about. Don Lemon is so brilliant and has a strong moral compass. Not all pet shelters are pet friendly. And once those fill up, people are either faced with a choice to abandon their pets for their own safety or take the risk.
It's not as "easy" as you would think. 😐
Yes. I'd never abandon my loved ones, human or not.
Anyone living in an area with possible annual hurricanes should have an evacuation plan in place that includes their pets.
There are going to be so many people wishing they didn’t make that decision.

(As a kid) I’ve been through one hurricane, one tornado that hit our home, straight line winds that messed up our home, and a winter storm that left us without electricity for almost a month…
My parents made arrangements, well before any emergency situation, to have locations designated to either drop off our pets or places we could go as a family unit that would accept our pets.

Nawww, mother teaching daughter how to play stupid games. RE "endurance and strength and resilience" = I got this before I can get it again. Life is too short and too important to wasting it on material goods.
Sorry but where is the clean water, electric, food, etc. how many days will they be in this situation, what if the water was a few inches higher? I'd rather not take the chance with my child. Not a good example nor a teaching moment.
Yes, she was a super chill mom and I liked her T-shirt. Lucky they are ok!
@@fuzzlekitty The teaching moments happen while you're preparing for the storm. Stockpile water, ice, and food that can either be eaten cold or cooked on a grill. Electricity is nice, but plan to be without it. Charge cell phones and have backup batteries. Aso keep an inflatable boat on hand that'll hold people & pets in case you have to bail.
Some people might not have had the resources to leave.

Shelters are FREE and help was offered to anyone needing to get safe.
Both families mentioned their animal family members who may not be allowed into shelters. That's two cats and a dog who weren't left to drown. Those are good people.
People need to understand that a house can be rebuilt after the hurricane. But you must live to rebuild!
Leave, save yourself and come back for the rebuild.

Lol man cannot direct his own step .much less a roaring hurricane
@@patriciatennyson6557 Well that exactly my point, most of the people who fled the west coast to the central and east coast to evade the storm got hit anyways. Now most likely can’t get back home until the roads clear. Sometimes it makes more sense to stay if you can manage.
Was expecting it to hit as a 1.
Thank you!! The only place that evacuated on time was FCGU. A friend was forced to evacuate and come back to Tampa and was upset because that meant going straight into the storm but turns out she got lucky!
I wish people would heed evacuation orders. But if the state doesn't make it easier to evacuate (safer shelters, pet-friendly, transportation), some people will always stay behind.
The shelters ARE pet friendly
People can make up their own minds based on their particular situation and capabilities
not everyone can leave, that is a fact

Some couldn't afford the gas to leave
Some things can be replaced but you can't. Although our home had hurricane impact features, we followed directions when they told us to evacuate in Tampa.
I'm thankful there was no flooding or damage to our home, but we made a decision to not be tied to things but to value our lives instead. 🙏🏽❤️
I pray everyone affected get help and are safe. ❤️

I am in West Palm Beach and we were spared in every way possible. I cannot fathom the strength of Ian on Fort Meyers and the surrounding Gulf Coast. But to see that Orlando was in the crosshairs and sections of the city are looking like this... It is apocalyptic. I am so sorry for everyone that has lost everything in the process of this. It is only a matter of time before every single person in FL is effected by a natural disaster. It will happen to me no doubt. I love my home and live within a few miles of the ocean. I can only anticipate the horror that will fall upon my wood-frame house. It was built in the 60's. It will definitely not fare well. All I can do is prepare as well as possible, leave and hope for the best. I cannot imagine myself in such a circumstance. What a mess this has made.

Did you miss the part where the woman said the houses in her neighborhood are holding up but all the cars are trashed? They may well legit be safer in the houses in this case. Many people have drowned in their cars trying to drive away a little late.

@@MrChopsticktech I was not speaking about people drowning in their vehicles in this hurricane in particular, but in similar weather events in general. Now they don't have a choice in many states - even if they are raped.
The decision to stay or flee, or where to flee, is like playing a game of "dodge ball." Sometimes, you'll flee to where the hurricane ends up going. It happened to me, with Hurricane Charlie, in 2004. After coming ashore at Port Charlotte, Charlie was supposed to go through Lakleland, FL, so I evacuated to Melbourne, on the east coast. Charlie missed Lakeland, but ended up going through Melbourne, albeit with only 65-70 mph winds.
That's still a big brain move. You seriously increased your odds of survival.
