Completely unrealistic. Americans wouldn’t even care. They would be to busy trying to occupy Starbucks locations to ration Pumpkin Spice lattes than actually fight against each other. That might require effort.
We watched Civil War at one of its first San Francisco screenings. The entire story is riveting. The performances are excellent. The casting of journalists as the main characters is a brilliant choice. They are simultaneously detached yet thoroughly involved. I thought the final scene which I call The Fall of the White House was expertly done. Both for the cinemaphotography and the sound. Normally, I do not like explosive battle scenes. The Civil War finale is literally the Grand Finale.
I’m reading that the movie doesn’t pick a political side or try to virtue signal or try to make a case for any ideology. One way to appeal to both sides in the movie is the coalition of California and Texas, which represent the Western Forces in the trailer......two incredibly politically opposite states.
You do it by NOT developing ANY of the supporting characters in the movie and I mean absolutely no development or backstory. It’s a bunch of noise and shooting with some tragedy sprinkled in. And lastly even beyond all that it still is clearly meant to attack 45 (antagonistic relationship with FBI, references to Charlottesville, third term)

If you could please touch on the narrative of the two sides of the “war”. What viewpoints are meant to be the “enemy” of the film? If it’s a bunch of traditional value bashing then no way I’m watching this in theaters.
The only position I see (broadly) is that this is an anti-war film. Any sense of what the two sides are is pretty vague (which frustrates some people but I personally think is the far wiser choice -- one could extrapolate, but given that we're thrown into it mid-war, it's exactly what...makes sense actually). It's a film about the senselessness of this situation, not the senselessness of any particular side of American politics. Journalism or “official press” holds little meaning to modern people who are on alert. Making this movie centered on the press is presenting an alternate reality. This movie is more sci fi than a possible reality. When the poop hits the fan , there will be no “institutional press”
I just watched it, thanks to MAX. I'll be honest, I felt like a lot was missing. I don't mind following the journalist. But we do not know why the civil war broke out. We do not understand any of the characters motivation. We don't understand the sides. The President, the cause. Like who was the racist dude w the sunglasses, which side did he stand with. The President, who sides with him. The final push, the action scenes wa fantastic but like.. who are they fighting. Who is our protagonist siding with. Who is the military that's attacking the WH. A lot of questions that were never answered. Amazing cinematography, great visuals, amazing acting, decent dialogue. Horrible story, and I didn't care for any of the characters, unfortunately. 5/10 for me
Intriguing premise, but i don't like the set up for the war itself. I feel like Garland kinda chickened out, or he just don't understand American politics. I'm still looking forward to it tho 😂
trump only uses it as a threat to the to to keep his fascist ass out of jail , he is not smart enough to comprehend the consequences of civil war. And don't you dare throw communism and liberalism in the same boat . Most communist countries are run by very right wing dictators.
Just let you know that California and Texas plus Virginia are the top military personnel that are active in reserve to as well. i think if not, someone can correct me on that.
I'm certainly looking forward to this film. Just out of curiosity Perri, what is that missing half point in your rating scale that prevented Civil War from being "perfect"?
Spoilers ahead: It’s always important to ask what a movie is about. I think the fact that it’s not about politics but rather about the nature of violence, truth and repression is such a great choice by Garland. The fact that this isn’t about why the war started or ideology resonates with what this story is actually about. Jessie is what Lee used to be, annoyed with how repressed her parents are with not caring about the true horrors of the world, scared but alive. Lee is currently in the story in the phase of repression, has no fear and feels dead. The death of Sammy opens the repression of Lee about what war is truly about - survival, and taking care of the people you care about. Lee understood her true state, and she is not that different than her and Jessie parents. Her parents know she is danger and doing nothing about it.she decides to take action and saves Jessie. This is the main storyline in the film. Obviously, the take about the banality of violence is also super strong, and it fits that the president last words were “please don’t kill me”, as this is what it is all about. The message is - it doesn’t matter how it started - here are the repercussions. If there is a political message here, it’s actually the appropriate and simplest one for America. Remember what might be the repercussions, and be more empathetic and negotiable- anti extremism. 10/10 film.
Saw this today to a mostly full cinema in New Zealand of all places. There are some incredibly jarring scenes (the 'what kind of american?' segment in particular) and the use of sounds (on & off) was wicked
It is not lost on me that a movie about a US Civil War is being released and heavily promoted in an election year of a highly divided nation. I refuse to take the bait. Not seeing this. Also I wonder who is paying these critics to promote this film?
Although I'm very interested to see this film, I'm not going to the theater. We ditched theaters before COVID and nothing has risen to a level to convince us to return.
Coming from SXSW and I have to agree that the sound design in this is incredible. If you’re even halfway interested, you need to do this in imax for the Dolby sound.
LOVED THE SCENE WHERE : In the middle of a shooting War ........ The Girls take time out to try on a dress and do some shopping ! EVERY CHAUVINIST IN THE THEATER WAS LAUGHING THEIR AZZ OFF !!!
I'm extremely anxious to see this film. The storyline sounds stirring and challenging, the trailers have looked great, Garland is terrific, and A24 always chooses their projects carefully. This is a theatrical movie for me!
I hope this movie turns people stomachs away from talking about or promoting real civil war in the US. People think he would be cool and exciting, exciting it would be but not in a manner you would like.
OK folks, here is your average guy review. BLUF: Don't waste your money. Catch this on the "flix" when it makes its rounds on that venue. So far, the largest waste of my money this decade. STRONG POINTS: Cinematography - Solid A. Casting - A. Acting - I'll give an A as they did with it what they could or were forced to do. Stephen McKinley Henderson's part in this movie will probably be underestimated but his character is critical to whatever success it finally obtains. Without him the cringe factor goes up the scale rather quickly. Here you go: It's not the responsibility of the listener/viewer or the CONSUMER to fill in the blanks when telling a story. This was this film's most epic failure. If you like such offerings you're in the ultimate minority of viewership. There was neither a launch point for this conflict nor a development of if! There was about zero development of the characters as you're just forced to accept their roles and only a hint of current/previous employers. Just imagine that you paid full price for a couple of movie tickets to Star Wars (something that you heavily anticipated seeing) and you're dumped into the running movie at about the 60 minute mark and left to your own devices to fill in any alleged "missing parts!" I'm not a war correspondent or a photojournalist but have been in many conflicts. People can more easily see the story you're telling through the lense of a soldier because there s a little bit of soldier or rebel in all of us. However, telling a story through the lenses of a photojournalist is enormously more difficult and even more so if you expect an audience of average Americans to enjoy such. Lots of 4 and 5 star reviews on this movie but I'm of the opinion that most giving this level of applause probably give mediocre movies a high 3 or 4 as a payment of for the people's efforts rather than their actual enjoyment of the offering. Some folks are just good people and are prone to give good reviews on movies and it's a total box office flop if they're ever critical of one. Again, save your money and don't try and be an archaeologist digging around trying to find the missing bones to complete a skeleton. They are completely MIA in this movie. Destined to have high viewership on netflix or tubi if you can just keep yourself out of the theaters! However, after viewing this you'll soon forget that you ever saw it except for folks like me and others that from time to time recall an occasion they wasted hard earned money! I'll get over this one too. After leaving the theater I had a feeling like I had been to another iteration of Friday the 13th! I expected much more from a movie named Civil War. In conclusion, whatever the POTUS did to cause this Civil War (and we'll never ever know) was probably the worst sort of unforgivable sin as the "resistance" showed him absolutely no humanity, mercy or respect for his office. They eliminated the target and moved onto the next one after a few photo ops! OK Hollywood, you can redeem yourself. There is more than plenty of information, news and theories floating around in popular America today to do a really good action movie about an American Civil War Part 2. You could actually do a movie with multiple sequels. Democrats versus Republicans and I'd absolutely enjoy seeing the casting for such an offering. Who wouldn't pay to see Adam Schiff arrested in the middle of the night at his home and put on trial for his abundance of proven lies!
I’d rather see a movie about people electing competent leaders who have their shit together and actually working towards resolving global geopolitical issues in a manner that helps humanity in general rather than fantasize about the collapse of society. But that’s just me I guess.

Journalism or “official press” holds little meaning to modern people who are on alert. Making this movie centered on the press is presenting an alternate reality. This movie is more sci fi than a possible reality. When the poop hits the fan , there will be no “institutional press”
It's a comedy, the heroes are Journos, great for a laugh! In real life, Journos are going to be the first targets, with good reason.
5/10 for me
AMERICA'S FUTURE FORETOLD IN THIS FLICK? CHILLING!
Intriguing premise, but i don't like the set up for the war itself. I feel like Garland kinda chickened out, or he just don't understand American politics. I'm still looking forward to it tho 😂
So many Canadian liberals, communists and globalists attacking this movie because they think Donald Trump will start a Civil War. Lol.
trump only uses it as a threat to the to to keep his fascist ass out of jail , he is not smart enough to comprehend the consequences of civil war. And don't you dare throw communism and liberalism in the same boat . Most communist countries are run by very right wing dictators.
Just let you know that California and Texas plus Virginia are the top military personnel that are active in reserve to as well. i think if not, someone can correct me on that.
I'm choosing to believe this title is intentional
EDIT: nvm
JUST got out of the movie! Damn! Super intense! Absolutely worth seeing in a theater. Great great movie and still trying to analyze it!
10/10 film.
Best film of the year so far for me.
Saw this today to a mostly full cinema in New Zealand of all places. There are some incredibly jarring scenes (the 'what kind of american?' segment in particular) and the use of sounds (on & off) was wicked
I don't want to hang with journalists in the quest for truth blah blah.
Give me Godzilla minus one part 2!
Nah. this country doesn't need a big budget hollywood hyped up movie on discontent... sorry
WHAT IS THE POINT OF THE Film, just to show how hard a journalist job is????
To me, the themes are about dehumanization and nationalism. And it connects to current events and American history.
reviews of plausible wars by non-veterans, Oscars children...
Alex is one of my favorite autour filmmakers. I am hyped about it.
ok what kind of american are you?
i'm a "pirate the movie online" type of american
It is not lost on me that a movie about a US Civil War is being released and heavily promoted in an election year of a highly divided nation. I refuse to take the bait. Not seeing this. Also I wonder who is paying these critics to promote this film?
The main actor is incredible, he surprised me
That main actor wasn't a man what movie were you watching
Yeah but who are they documenting the war for when there's no Internet or newspapers?
History.
There are humans and civilizations outside the US
Amercans don't know that. They think they are the center of the universe and nothing is going on outside the US.@@nounverbnoun
Should I see this in IMAX?
Yes! 👍
Perri - Was delayed trying to watch your new Road To Scream video, but can´t find it anymore. Was it removed or is it put on private ?
I'm going to the Latvian premiere of "Civil War" in six hours from now.
Actually, the journalists are not embedded.
'Deeply engaging personal stories'. What?!?! There is zero character development. We are told very little about the main characters.
Hopefully this movie will wake people up .!!!
The film is on my top 5 most anticipated of the year! Glad you liked it!
This has me excited! Thank you. Also I know ive following you for many years where i know your dewey score based off your points 😂💛
This is not just a movie, wait for it ...
LOVED THE SCENE WHERE : In the middle of a shooting War ........ The Girls take time out to try on a dress and do some shopping ! EVERY CHAUVINIST IN THE THEATER WAS LAUGHING THEIR AZZ OFF !!!
Is it an oscar movie ?
You don't need to see this movie, we are already in ww3.
I hope you're not gonna stop covering Scream because of hypocrites.
It looks awesome!! We cannot wait to see it!!! And the whistling in the second trailer was both chilling and powerful.
Spot on. I loved this film.
Strong premise with weak plot=flop.
I can’t wait to see this film!!! I’m big fan of Alex Garland, Annihilation is favorite film of his.
Sounds great, Perri!
we called it predictive programming that s what they want
Ahhhh I soooo hope and pray I made the cut!!!!!! Sooo pumped
Concerned it might be a film that takes sides on the political divisions of today. We don''t need anything that divides us further.
Here you go:
It's not the responsibility of the listener/viewer or the CONSUMER to fill in the blanks when telling a story. This was this film's most epic failure. If you like such offerings you're in the ultimate minority of viewership. There was neither a launch point for this conflict nor a development of if! There was about zero development of the characters as you're just forced to accept their roles and only a hint of current/previous employers. Just imagine that you paid full price for a couple of movie tickets to Star Wars (something that you heavily anticipated seeing) and you're dumped into the running movie at about the 60 minute mark and left to your own devices to fill in any alleged "missing parts!"
I'm not a war correspondent or a photojournalist but have been in many conflicts.
Have fun dreaming and thank you for elaborating on your bs feelings of disgust and outrage
I get your point, but a story without obstacles is a boring story
Go watch that movie then
@@andresguillen6750 Will do, once enough people pull their shit together collectively to make it. Hopefully it’s boring AF.
The reason everyone has their eye on the film is because this country is at an inflection point and ripe for balkenization.
Pablo Escobar???
Oh man I had big hopes for this so this review just affirms be there opening day
Thanks Perri
Oh irrelevant but I know you’re thrilled about Scream 7 news aren’t you I mean cmon
