- Die Stem van Suid-Afrika (Afrikaans: [di ˈstɛm fan sœit ˈɑːfrika], lit. '"The Voice of South Africa"'), also known as "The Call of South Africa" or simply "Die Stem" (Afrikaans: [di ˈstɛm]), is a former national anthem of South Africa. There are two versions of the song, one in English and the other in Afrikaans, which were in use early on in the Union of South Africa alongside God Save the Queen and as the sole anthem after South Africa became a republic. It was the sole national anthem from 1957 to 1994, and shared co-national anthem status with "God Save the King/Queen" from 1938 to 1957. After the end of apartheid in the early 1990s, it was retained as a co-national anthem along with "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika" from 1994 to 1997, when a new hybrid song incorporating elements of both songs was adopted as the country's new national anthem, which is still in use.

I remember this anthem from primary school. I admit i hated it and the old flag,but the older i get the more i miss that flag. That anthem and old flag will always be my true south africa. F.u.c.k apartheid it ever belonged then or now.

@@SunTzu383 Either a super power or a group of states the apartheid system reached its limit extremist music like "kill the Boer farmer" was only the sign of it's limit I am not saying that now it is better because since Mandela's retirement and death the part of the ANC has this torch on his legacy but if apartheid would not be abolished there would certainly have been An equivalent of genocide against the Boers, even coloreds and native Indians, so great would have been the hatred among sub-Saharan people towards this system.

I was amazed how South Africa was still holding it together when I visited friends from Zimbabwe (Rhodedia) in 2009. I was expecting a shit-hole, but it was still function quite well. I don't think it is now.

why is everyone in the comments saying "long live apartheid!, this is true south africa!" yes it's a good anthem, and yes the streets are clean but only 10% of everyone in south africa was able to enjoy that with the other 90% being forced to live in dirty slums sure modern south africa has corruption and crime but that exists everywhere in the world and south africa is still the 3rd largest economy in africa it still has one of the best living standards on the continent and it is a complete democracy that lets everyone vote unlike apartheid which only let 10% of all people vote and the anthem back then was good but today it's better seriously just listen to it

of the murders were committed by blacks on blacks .The anc became the governing party in 1994 and since then there were 500 000 murders in our country,that includes 80 000 whites 30 000 of them were commercial farmers!The international community wanted a puppet government in place here so they could get our minerals for next to nothing.All state departments are bankrupt due to mismanagement and now the government wants to delve into our pension funds.So many blacks confessed that the had a better life under apartheid,ou blacks were the richest blacks in sub Sahara so next time you want to post crap get your facts straight first!

Not necessarily the case. I loved the old South Africa I grew up in. But we also recognized things had to change and that's why we voted yes. But then things went south, and we left. So unfortunate the ANC couldn't build on what was handed to them on a silver plate. To the benefit of all South Africans.
