      @teece99 5 лет назад +27

      Yes, no problem with the black hitting the rest in those circumstances. Yuan was unable to move the rest out of the way because John was shaking his hand! It would have been unfair to penalise him for this and clearly John was satisfied that the game was over.

    • @OfflineSetup
      @OfflineSetup 5 лет назад +1

      My understanding is that only the player at the table can concede. It could be a rule change was introduced to speed up the game (147 excepted). The ref called no foul, Yuan won. The shaking of hands was not the end of the game although it was a distraction, the ref calling the end was the end.

    you can ban one person for life and then just slap another on the wrist. The greatest scandal in snooker was not match fixing - but the extreme punishment given to Stephen Lee. When Ted Lowe was asked once whether there was a limit to the amount of time someone could take on a shot his answer was that "yes there is a limit - but nobody knows what it is!)"

    There are two types of push shot; firstly one where you physically push the cue ball along with the cue (you are pushing the white) and secondly one where the cue is in contact with the white at the same time the white is in contact with another ball in which case you are deemed to be pushing the other ball along using the cue and white. In order for this not to occur you have to play the white away from the ball which it is already touching. In which scenario it is deemed you have hit the ball you are playing away from and you are credited with hitting that ball if appropriate. If that ball is not appropriate then you must hit the appropriate ball after playing away. Hitting the cue ball twice with the cue is not a push shot but it is a foul shot.

    9:18 Lee's match fixing was largely discovered "following a police investigation into suspicious betting patterns relating to a match played in 2009". It's easy enough to throw a few shots without anyone being aware so don't expect to be able to see where Lee 'throws' the match. But when huge amounts are bet on one player to win one frame and very little on the other player or other frames - that must stand out like the proverbial sore thumb!

    • @lsbrother
      @lsbrother 5 лет назад +2

      @Daniel Burke Well by definition it is evidence - anything pertaining to the case is - whether it is sufficient to prove guilt is a different matter.

    • @vmax4steve524
      @vmax4steve524 4 года назад +2

      the thing is that the police didn't prosecute Lee but world snooker decided to ban him and unfortunately Lee decided to defend himself rather than get himself a barrister.
      It also came about during the time when Pukka Pies sponsored a tournament, which would have been embarrassing for them if Lee had won it, that's a joke btw.
      The Higgins match fixing video was a set up by NOTW journalists, there was never any intention to fix a match only to discredit the sport and Higgins himself who bluffed his way through the meeting thinking he was talking to gangsters and then simply walked away from the meeting and ignored it, which proved to be a mistake as he should have reported the incident to world snooker, and that's what he was banned and fined for.
      That was his version of the events anyway, and these betting cartels are run by real gangsters so you can't just report them to the police as they have the police in their pockets half the time and both they and the police have guns, so if someone points a gun at you, even metaphorically, you say yes.
      I'm pretty sure there are many incidents of match fixing that go unoticed by world snooker, after all if there is no prize money for a first round defeat and you have to fund your hotel and flight to and from china etc you need to make some money, so a bet in play set up for a final frame win by either player can attract some good odds if one player goes 3-0 up in a best of 7 and the match ends up 4-3.

    There are vital differences between the Lee and Higgins cases. Lee fixed matches, bet on those matches and made a profit on those matches. The evidence against him was overwhelming. Higgins agreed, in principle, to fix a few matches for money. However, as the NotW broke the story BEFORE any money changed hands and BEFORE the matches took place, he had what might be called 'plausible deniability'. His manager took the fall for him. Personally, I think Higgins intended to throw matches for money, but you can't convict someone on what you think, only on what you can prove. The case against Lee was proven, the case against Higgins wasn't.

    I think the question of the invisible touch is a very interesting one considering other rules. For instance, if you can make a perfect snooker, you will be penalized for it under current rules. Because a difficult snooker can get you an unlimited number of points, but a perfect snooker can only get you a maximum of seven because there's no way to say that an effort is good enough or not when faced with an impossibility. To be consistent with that, I think that a hit on the red that is so perfect that the referee doesn't know that it is a hit, that should be penalized for being too perfect.
    As you may have guessed, I think that this is completely wrong. A perfect snooker should be rewarded and likewise, if the referee can't say that it wasn't a hit, then it should be counted as a hit. But the rules should be logically consistent. If the rule is that it's the players duty to avoid perfection, then that should be the rule. Maybe a suitable reward for a perfect snooker would be that the victim is sentenced to one snooker needed, but gets the choice of a free ball from the current position or handing the game back to the opponent with ball in hand in the kitchen. I haven't thought very much about it, but that seems reasonable to me.
    As a computer guy, I could come up with some digital solutions, but I don't want to. Just make the rules logical and humans can figure it out on their own.

    The comment that “Peter Ebdon was never known for being hasty” is in-correct. In his young years (with ponytail), Peter was lightning fast, like Ronnie or Jimmy... it was only after he had his style changed to super slow that he started to be more succesful.

    Another controversial moment: the first time Peter Ebdon did his "COME ON!!" victory jig because it was accused of being psychological intimidation. I remember watching it live: Ebdon was down on the shot, nostrils flaring, heavy breathing, eyes manic with determination as he lined up a long pot that would have meant losing if he missed. He potted it, and was so psyched up, having put everything into the shot that he screamed, "COME ON!!!", prowling around the table shaking his cue. Stephen Lee, his opponent, did not look impressed, he kept shaking his head, wiping the nervous sweat off his cue with a towel.

    John Higgins should have had at least a 10 year ban ,he was guilty ,anyone that talks like he did about match fixing is not just making conversation , he knew what he was doing and saying .Hearn got him off as he was a top 5 player and World Champion.Stephen Lee was collateral damage and was used as an example to others ,he was a bit of a Maverick and was expendable so was the perfect choice for a ban ,even though there was little evidence .Osullivans loss in the first round of this years World Championship looked far more ropey ,even if he didn't lose on purpose he had zero interest in being there ,which was evident from all the comments he made before the match .

    • @undervalueds
      @undervalueds 5 лет назад +2

      John Higgins was lucky as they never went through with fixing a match - him saying he felt threatened was rubbish - he looked fine. As for Stephen Lee, he still protests his innocence (as OJ Simpson did) but please, it was so obvious. The money transferred hands. Everyone knew what frames and games he was gonna throw - and if you watch some of them, it's bloody obvious - Stevie Wonder could have seen he was match fixing....

    • @DaveAndBeth1978
      @DaveAndBeth1978 5 лет назад +2

      In Higgins' case, he certainly wasn't completely innocent. But I think it's a little contentious to say "he looked fine"... As someone who fought out in Basra in 2004, however "fine" someone looks is no indication of how they feel... We were all bricking it that day we landed even though none of us showed it... Higgins' "look" doesn't mean he felt fine - he may well have felt genuinely threatened. Only he will ever know how true that statement was... That said, Higgins definitely failed to report an approach, but no money ever changed hands and no matches were ever found to be fixed - he got very lucky indeed... As no other incidences were ever found in Higgins' case and no evidence of him actually throwing a match ever emerged, I think the WPBSA felt compelled to give him the benefit of the doubt... In Lee's case, he was definitely guilty - the money was found in his account on not just one but numerous occasions... Not hearsay at all, he was caught red-handed. And it's one thing to miss or make an error once in a while, but to do so in a whole string of matches where (a) money had been transferred and (b) numerous unusual patterns of play were noticed is too obvious. There's absolutely no way Lee was "railroaded"

I can understand how anybody ignorant to the finer details of the case thinking he must be guilty if he was given a ban but having reported on it at the time its pretty clear he was only guilty of naivety and trusting the wrong person in mr mooney . I disagree that nothing has been done about the problem of slow play. A note of all the players average shot time has been taken and any player averaging over 30 seconds a shot is put down on a public report (published to "name and shame" on the world snooker website). This and a general belief that faster breaks tend to be more accurate has increased pace of play in 2019.

      it's not about when someone considers the match to be over, but when it actually IS over. referee faults are just as much faults as the player's. and it's not up to higgins when the game is over to begin with.
