  • Joe O'Herlihy has been U2's live sound engineer since 1978, and in 2021, he was tasked with testing the Sphere Immersive Sound system in Las Vegas. This system, developed by HOLOPLOT, uses groundbreaking 3D Audio-Beamforming technology to deliver highly precise, clear sound. Joe pushed the system to its limits, testing its durability at extremely high volumes, and found it revolutionary. The Sphere, designed to offer perfect acoustics, allowed U2 to perform without excessively loud sound levels. The system was originally developed for improving public address systems in German airports but has become essential for U2’s innovative live performances.

I loved - and was sort of relieved - when Joe talks about the rock and roll part of the PA.

Massively complex. I have heard mised reviews of the sound in this place. I couldnt imagine the challenges of doing this amazing gig, but I am sure that they are all over it.

Is there a PDF explaining the science of the dome giving everyone a similar stereo image?

It’s called beam forming and each seat having built in speakers.

The seats don't have built-in speakers. There are 10,000 seats that have haptic capabilities (when enabled). However, the speakers could theoretically target specific sections and maybe individual seats.

That's physically impossible due to propagation delay. There are two coverage modes, one is full venue, the other immersive coverage (only 10,000 seats). The source positioning in the sphere's array will determine how similar everyone's experience is...

For those who did not attend you are clueless. I am telling you the sound system will blow your mind. No low frequency ear ringing after the show. About three months later after the final sphere show I attend Blink 182 at Tmobile arena, where I live in Vegas. The sound their sucked. The sphere is a game changer and for other venues a deal breaker. You missed out.

I also believe that the current sound system is outdated! Pink Floyd and recently Roger Waters have quadraphonic sound where RW has perfect control over this by making it sound throughout the hall. With a surround-like sound, it doesn't have to be too loud, but it does have to be clear and good so that everyone feels comfortable with it!

It remains problematic that depending on where you sit, the experience may not be optimal. But I have no doubt that the seats around the console offer a great experience!

I'm not gonna spend $1 to witness this technology in person. If I have to sit back and watch a live event from a screen, i'm gonna do it from my room. I'm not gonna go through all the travel and nonsense of standing in line and all the other issues, this is awesomely ridiculous.

Good for you? It is no different than an arena in that way... you still see the band on stage. The real issue is tickets normal humans can't afford.

If standing in line is a problem for you, it sounds like live events are a nonstarter for you to begin with, in which case... why are you complaining about this?

Tickets were thousands of dollars for nosebleeds the last UFC fight. It’s cool and all but not for me either.
