As a creative, I go through so much storage. Whether I’m storing photos from a shoot, backing up my computer, or storing files from these RUclips videos; I easily use 100gb of storage a week. I hate having 10 different hard drives with some projects stored on one and other projecfs stored on an other. I want one hard drive that has everything one it, and I want to be able to access these files from anywhere in the world.
After looking into cloud storage options like Google Drive, BackBlaze, and Dropbox; I found that alot of these options are pretty expensive. So the Synology DS920+ NAS (Network Attached Storage) is by far the best option. Yes it’s a huge upfront cost but worth it in the long run.

@@AllAccessConstruction Imagine having 108 terabytes of data and then losing it because your dumbass set a raid 0 Instead of having less overall capacity with a solid backup. That would be a nightmare.

The limit would theoretically be the same as your internet speed away from home which is usually well over what Google drive gives you and at home it would be accessible at local speeds (1gbps+)
You need 4x27TB hard drives for that. Where do you find such?

How do you access your NAS from anywhere in the world? You have to be in your network to access the network attached storage, don’t you?
Not really, I'm assuming it's like Plex so once you port forward you can use it anywhere
Kind of like how if you port forward anyone can access a Minecraft server running on your network without being connected to the network itself

Its backed on all the hard-drives. If 1 drive malfunction, the 3 others can create the data of the 1 hd that lost.
The file system can fail. Be careful
Hear me out I have a terminally ill 9 year old son and I have a lot of photos and videos that I never want to lose is this a good solution for permanent storage and is it going to cost me a fortune because medical bills are killing me already

Why exaggerate ?
It’s not exaggerating? The DS920+ uses a 64-bit structure with a total volume capacity of 108TB. If you don’t think so, read the specs on Synology’s website. Obviously you can’t get there with 8TB drives but who said you’re limited to 8TB drives? You can buy bigger drives like 20TB, etc.
Also setting up RAID is an option, I don’t have RAID setup on mine.

The DS920+ has a total capacity of whatever hard drives are installed x4 bays. The largest Seagate hard drive easily available is the 20tb IronWolf Pro. Four of these would cost $580 each x 4 is $2320. Add the DS920+ at $600 and this would be an outlay of just less than $3000 !
Even that only gives 80Tb in total and the system is still just a JBOD. There is no data redundancy, so if one disk fails, and they always do, ALL data is lost.
RAID allows for one disk to fail and still gives 60TB of usable storage space.
I have 2 DS920+ units set up in this way. Even then, everything is still backed up to external USB3 drives, in case of a two disk failure.
Perhaps you would correct the video, just so that viewers aren’t tempted to purchase such a system, only to find that a) it doesn’t meet there needs and b) all their precious data is lost forever.

The 108TB is the total single volume capacity allowed by it's 64bit architecture. By including this capacity in the video, it tells the viewer that if they had 20TB in drives it will work, if they have 60TB it will work. If I had said "this is a 32TB drive" (8TB x 4 bays), the viewer is right to assume that the 56TB they might have might not work in this system when actually it would. By telling the viewer the capacity, they can make the connection whether the drives they buy or have, will work or not.
As tech becomes more advanced, these companies will continue to release higher capacity drives above 22TB. We've seen Western Digital release a 26TB drive earlier this year. Having 4 of those certainly gets us closer to the capacity. Knowing that the system allows for 108TB, you'll know that in the future when larger drives become available, whether or not it'll work in your system.
We're not talking about the current drives available on the market, the price, whether or not someone wants to set it up as a RAID, or the size of drives someone wants to put in it; because these are all choices that can be made by the user.
I understand what your saying, and you're right with the current drives available on the market today; you can not get to 108TB unless you get those 26TB WD drives and include the 2 nVME cache drives as storage 🤣. I could have probably stated that the 108TB is it's "capacity" and I only have 8TB IronWolf drives in mine but with short videos like this, you need to be quick and concise to the point to get a video under the 1 minute limit. Buy combining the two and saying this is a 108TB server, it tells the viewer the capacity in a short amount of time.

I was going to say I have six 12 TB drives equally enough to 72 TB that I do in complete redundancy for a full 36 terabytes of space usable
@therealhatchet I currently have a mix of 20tb western digital reds and iron wolf's in each bay. I haven't seen 27tb drives yet but I have seen 26tb drives on the market which is wild!

That’s the capacity of the unit. 108TB. So technical when 27TB drives become available it would be able to handle them. Currently we have 26TB drives available!

I'm currently running 20tb drives in each bay. I'm simply stating the capacity without needing to say... "it's capacity is 108tb but I only have 80tb in mine" that way I can run through the specs and still fit it into a 1 minute short. @@Chief-ek1vl
Hes using 4tb drives, his math is also a little bit off, 4x4 doesn't equal 108.
The capacity of the NAS is 108tb which will actually be useful when 28tb drives come to market which isn't too far away (last time I checked were at 24tb right now). Also I'm running 20tb drives in it right now not 4tb 🤣

Not sure why I would ever buy a NAS to run 4TB drives and not even be able to run a RAID setup lol
Also why in the world would you want to run 100+ terabytes in a 4 bay consumer grade nas? Especially once you start running things other than just storage, you will get your transfer speeds bottlenecked by your CPU which is probably Celeron based, and was fast when intel was putting them in Ultrabooks 15 years ago.
