  • In the past 3 years, speeding has been the number one traffic offence in Singapore. About a month ago, there was a major accident which resulted in the death of the driver and all four passengers in the car. Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver was believed to have been speeding before crashing into a shophouse where the car caught fire. So what are the consequences of extreme speed and when do car modifications cross the line to possibly turn your car into a death trap? Talking Point delves into the psyche of speed demons and finds out what happens to your body when you crash at extreme speeds.

"Racers are safe drivers" is seriously so loose.
You have to add "professional" in front of that statement. These speed demons are literally demons, because demons disregard the rules. Safety is the least of a demon's worry.

I have a friend that occasionally gives me a ride in his car. He tailgates, hogs the overtaking lane, does sudden lane changes, doesn't signal because "no one is there"... Now I just turn down his offers for a lift and take public transport where it is a less butt-clenching experience. Some people are like that, and it just naturally translates into their driving behaviour as well.
There must be a cultural aspect to it as well? City drivers are notoriously impatient, while rural drivers are extremely kind and forgiving.

As a civil engineer; which yall failed to touch on since we are the ones who designs the roads and their limits....
CEs are known to add a factor of safety to most roadways by a 10% to 30% margin depending on the circumstances. Additionally, upon reducing the functional speed limit we are instructed to round down to the nearest 5 or 0. This in essence can give anywhere from a 5% decrease to 15% decrease on top of the factor of safety.
Basically where this is going is that most drivers are allowed 10-15% excess of speed limit because of these design features. Most cops in America can only start writing tickets when you are well over 20% the speed limit. There's gray areas, but this is predominantly the reason so many speed. The roads were meant for higher speeds, not the lower ones....

Without anywhere for people to use what they pay for, where else but on the road? Furthermore, driving tests have become too old fashioned and not useful anymore, as evident from these accidents. The Singapore Government and authorities can just build a race track or two that's designed for driving at high speeds, and doesn't take up any stretch of public road. So that Singaporean petrol heads with fast cars can have a place to drive fast safely, and without endangering the public. I can never understand why the Singapore Government won't do that.

  • @stephen-w

Speed limit has to be followed but it doesn't always mean driving within it is safer than over it. One thing for sure is, rather than paying full attention on the road and surrounding, the speedometer check takes away some of your attention off what matters more.
When a poor car driver driving at 80km/h on a 90km/h speed limit road, he may be more of a speed demon compared to a sound driver driving a good car at 110km/h on the same road. And what determines that limit is 90, not 110 or 60 or 30?
There may be people who feel BMW, Audi drivers are "reckless or showing off or risking others". Yes in a way that's true but asking those cars to be driven within the general speed limit is like asking a Honda to drive e.g.50 on a 90km/h limit road. Likewise, some poor/laden car drivers that can only safely travel at 50km/h may feel the Honda is showing off weaving or overtaking them at 90km/h eventhough it is within the legal limit.
Good drivers can still drive safe even at higher speed. They know their limit and has a good feel of the car limitations and surrounding. They drive within those limits. Yes it takes longer braking distance but they know their distance. They drive faster when it's clear, slower when it's not to keep within their reaction distance and handling of the car in check.
Drivers not knowing the surrounding limitations, nor their own self and car limitations can be more of a hazard even travelling within the speed limit. They are numb (not dumb) to the surrounding. Low awareness.
Speed limits probably are there to minimize the coexistence clash of these few groups:
    1. the numb unpredictable group that has a poor sense of surrounding including judging the speed and distance of other vehicles,
    2. lawful group, be it pro or poor driver that follow the speed limit,
    3. the group that can handle higher speed with sensible judgement,
    4. the dangerous group that risk everything at any speed.
Driving is somewhat like walking. Some can walk well, some prone to slip. Some prefer a pair of fast responsive shoes while some prefer comfortable pair. Some can run fast can sprint, while some can hardly even jog. Some can dodge, some just clumsy.
You pack all these different people in a park, trail or track, fast runners became labelled as reckless, inconsiderate show off bunch. Walkers (slow driver) and joggers (speed limit) become lane huggers (well, they are entitled to do so but keep left when not overtaking. Escalator culture) blocking runners' way (fast driver).
So try to be considerate to each other, be aware of situations and please don't race on public road except it's closed for you like the F1 event. Because racing is driving on the edge. It's very different from driving fast.
Credits to the presenter. He is highly respected for thorough journalism. He showed on the go-kart that driving fast doesn't necessarily mean the driver is driving recklessly. In fact, that fast driver may be driving even more sensibly than the much slower driver. He knows the limit and he drives below it. The slow driver here however, albeit driving at a much slower speed, is the more reckless one in a way for driving beyond limit loosing control (the presenter is on edge probably because he is in racing mode and willing to risk everything because it's safe closed environment). The problems for many motorists are they have no sense of where the limits are and cannot envision what's coming. Thus no pre-paration, takes longer and made poorer reaction. So the speed limit is among the ways to lower these risk impact and severity.
This is a debatable topic. As the world progress, there could be proportionately less and less people who can drive well - autonomous and not to mention even having the chance to drive a car. Another thing for sure is, cars are progressively becoming faster and faster and people will appreciate shorter commuting time done in a safe way.

    • @jrdk9276
      @jrdk9276 3 года назад

I agree with your statements. As for whether people become less proficient in driving, that will be dependent on how tough or difficult the tests become. I find that driving tests nowadays are inadequate and in no way teach the drivers how to control their cars in an emergency, say oversteering. Alternatively, they could have advanced high speed training for people that may want to buy a performance car and but may not feel comfortable driving it. Or, they could have in mandatory for cars that exceed a certain horsepower limit. Another somewhat unrealistic way to separate the fast and the slow driver would probably be to build certain roads or lanes that explicitly allow faster drivers to get to their destinations quicker.

The cause of an accident is due to the negligence of an individual controlling the vehicle. There is no specific research or data to show that high performance vehicle equals to higher probability of accident. Many times, we see accident happen on common vehicle and they can be massive or deadly as well. So in conclusion, any cars has the potential to create a deadly accident but more like how are we going to limit the actual speed allowed on the vehicle. Not forgetting, the proficiency level of the driver.

I'd rather have more difficult driving tests than to lower the speed limit. Most of these crashes have to do with skill than just the cars themselves. Certain cars especially depend on speed to help them stay on the road, especially those with spoilers built in. Furthermore, lowering the speed limit just makes us brake more, and from what the guy said, turning while braking is a sure way of causing an accident.

He has some points there but in correction, the correct braking technique will actually help to reduce accident by the correct way to "counter steer" But still, how many does know on that? Also, normal human reaction when car loses control is to jam brake thus his sentence make a point. Ultimately, I agree with you on having a more difficult test with tons of safety reaction compulsory course to be valid for driving

Why not make traffic police cameras with ability to read license plates around route entered into Google Maps to identify car owners on route with criminal records or traffic offences e.g. speeding to route optimal route for VVIP to evade danger routes to drive safely to destination - even criminal syndicate gang boss will want to steer clear of other criminal syndicate gang boss? Separately, In 1,000 years time, a project may be delegated where all cars are networked to 100 x faster than 5G internet with one way vehicle diagnostic push (no control of vehicle), so if car exceed speed limit = auto fine, if tamper with networking device = auto fine, if car on road and not networked as per road camera with license plate reading = auto fine. Unfortunately, with change, some people will not be happy for reasons XYZ and some people will not be happy for no reasons. There are infinite pros and cons, but depending on the reader's mood and biases, the replies are often one sided supportive or one sided unsupportive. Imagine if you were driving and lets just say that u go 91 kmg in a 90 zone. Knowing how precise and strict computers are, you would be fined even though u exceeded it by 1kmh. Now, imagine if people, being afraid of getting a fine because of that, driving 20kmh below speed limit. Now, imagine rush hour traffic with everyone going at 70kmh or below. Not so fun after all. Also, automared cars may be a reality but there will always be people wanting to drive the car themselves. Also, i do not really trust automated cars, as, they may screw up sometimes, and can you imagine if a hacker got into the 5g network that every car is connected into? The amount of chaos caused by just making every car turn right would be catastrophic.

Not so much the speeding. That is merely a part of the whole car enthusiasts thing. Other times, someone may just be rushing to an important meeting or event. Regardless, there are many reasons as to why someone speeds, but we shouldnt group it all into a group, but rather, learn why people would want to speed.

Plus, there isnt really any deep digging to find out why. Simply ask the people around you that do, or go to a proper and legit car owners club and they would be happy to explain to you the various joys of driving, and that speeding is sometimes a part of it and often times, frowned upon as well.

@@jrdk9276 It is possible to be a car enthusiast and abide by the law. In my view, it is great if someone is a car enthusiast, more money is spent into the economy. The question to ask is not why people like speeding. The answer is clear, this activity results in a release of endorphins. It is the same high sought by substance abusers like smokers, recreational drug users...etc. My question is why exactly do they seek this rush of temporary excitement despite knowing the risks. If they are seeking that high, I am sure smoking and recreational drug use is not only cheaper but safer. Though it lacks the "show-off" factor. Perhaps these people simply have some sort of narcissistic disorder? Or is it due to peer pressure? Probing deeper might reveal something about Singaporean society. Perhaps something unsightly?

@@Destroyer4700 yes, i agree with you. Personally, speeding is just one part of it, but for me, as a car enthusiast, even i wouldnt want to go fast, at least not over my limit. For those that speed, i think it has to be broken down into 2 categories; one that likes to speed, and one that had to speed for whatever reason. those that like speeding, it is mainly a show off factor and indeed sometimes peer pressure. That is something i wouldnt mind condemning, the attempt to speed on public roads. That being said, i can sympathise with those that like it not only for the thrill, but it could also have to do with, say, those that may just miss the chance to go to malaysia to race. For those that needs to speed for, say, an important meeting, i would probably say that if they would miss it, at that point in time, it felt worse than death.

@@Destroyer4700 as for the risk factor, i believe its due to the complacency of the driver that, even though clearly inadequate, may have thought he was a better driver than he really was. That is why i advocate for a tougher driving course or at the very least a sort of high speed control program for certain buyers that would like to purchase a car that exceeds a certain horsepower limit. That way, people can play with the cars they want, and at the same time, know how to control it.

Your knowledge and research on how cars work factors that cause a collision is not nearly as good enough. You talk about power of the car, what about stopping power of a car? A lamborghini with carbon ceramic brakes coupled with micheline pilot sports 4s or cup 2 tyres.. will stop in a shorter distance from 90kmph than a stock Toyota camry doing 60kmph. Also modifying a car doesn't always throw it off balance. Most cars are build to handle much more power and engine are tuned down to match emission standards. So Any car is capable of handling little bit more power. Accidents happen because of stupidity of some drivers. Who doesn't know the limits of them self and the cars their driving. Cars are just tools like any other machine. Wrong person use the wrong tool for the wrong task. That's when you have an accident. Speed has nothing to do with it. Infact standards of driver licence test need to be updated.

IMO mechanics gotta be held partly responsible for this upgrades, or "zengs"
The pricing of these upgrades should be relooked imo. Obvious speed enhancers should be way pricier than the rims, tyres and brakes, etc.
And there has to be regulations on this zengs. Example would be customers need to upgrade their brakes tyres before getting their engines done. Otherwise it's disallowed.

I disagree with having a race track to deter temptation for testing our high-powered cars. We simply don't have enough space for it to even be satisfying. If you look at it from an economic pov, it's not a good investment. From a deterrence pov, there are surely other ways to curb speed demons. What matters is the person behind the wheel, not the cars or the abundance/lack of race tracks. Mostly younger demographic tend to have the need to do so, peer pressure? Social expectations?
Where does the real problem lie? Is it difficult for them to comprehend the dangers they pose to others and themselves. The pain they may inflict not only on the victims but their families and loved ones. Why is it that the "speed demons" can't seem to practice a little bit of common sense and empathy, that they truly don't see the consequences of their actions? In my opinion, it's a lapse in our educational system. It starts from character building, which if you truly dig deep enough, will unfortunately come to realize that there is a lack of it in some of us living in Singapore.
