7:05 Actually the presidential building isn't Chinese. It was constructed by the Japanese in 1919 when Taiwan was still ruled by Japan. Most brick colonial looking building in Taiwan are usually Japanese in origin.

The "Temple" you saw on the round about is not a temple. It's the “Little South Gate" of ancient Taipei city wall. 4 gates (North Gate, East Gate, South Gate and Little South Gate) has been preserved when city wall was tore down during the city renovation and introduction of railway to Taipei (1900-1904). Sadly West gate was destroyed as part of the city renovation. However, the destruction of West gate caused great dissatisfaction amount local peoples. To appease public opinion local govnment (At that time under Japanese occupation) decided to preserve the remains 4 city gates.

The food on the table in the temple are offerings. They are for deities in the temples or if done inside or outside ones’ own residence then to one’s ancestors. Taiwanese folk religion is multitheism. There are different deity responsible for different aspects of life. If you want marriage then you pray to the deity that is responsible for marriage, if you want fortunate then you pray to that deity and so on. There are deities that are more popular and considered more powerful. But you’ll find all major religions represented everywhere in Taiwan. There are praying rooms for Muslims in many public places as well as Mosques, Jewish Temples, Churches, Cathedrals….etc. Taiwanese people are fairly spiritual. Most of us believe in the beyond in our own ways.

I definitely consider myself as a Taiwanese. Chinese cultures impact Taiwan a lot for sure, however we have more to see including indigenous cultures and so on. Also some areas give you more Japanese vibe because of the colonization. Hopefully you get to see more. We are multicultural for sure and we are not part of China 😊.Welcome to Taiwan.

The country of Taiwan is made up of the islands of Formosa, Pescadores and Spratley's which became independent from the Japanese Empire at the signing of San Francisco Peace Treaty and has never been part of China. When the Manchu Empire colonized China, they made Formosa a province between 1885 and 1895. Then Japan annexed it in to its territory. After WWII, the supreme Allied Commander General Douglas MacArthur ordered Chinese contingents of Allied Troops occupy Formosa and Vietnam. That's why Formosa now got more Chinese characteristics.

Taiwan is a melting pot of culture. Taiwanese culture is very tolerant. We see the good in every culture and we adapt them as our own. We value Confucius teaching and tradition Chinese virtues and wisdom. We also value Japanese culture’s orderliness, humility and mutual respect. We are open to all religions and you’ll find a good variety of religious practices existing harmoniously. We also try to preserve our history as well as natural beauty as much as we can. Taiwan is an island that doesn’t sleep. You’ll find plenty to do 24/7.
