I listened to the Stealths back to back against the Aeon2 Noires at CanJam SoCal and bought the Aeon2 Noires instead. Even with their provided amps at CanJam, I wasn't impressed with the sound of the Stealth. I actually asked them to send you a pair, and apparently they ignored me. They look sexy as fuck, but that's about it. I also don't like that the headband is suspended with internal elastic bands which is essentially the shit that breaks down in underwear waistbands over time...why in the hell would I risk that breaking down over time on $4,000 headphones? In fairness, they did verbally claim they would replace them if that ever happened, but still. The Aeon 2 Noires are built like tanks and no elastic to potentially break down...maybe just earpads which are easier to swap. Not to mention I can run my Noires on my LG v40 audio jack just fine...screw you Apple.
EDIT: I wrote the elastic underwear band thing before I heard you say it in your review...glad we're on the same page. The Dan Clark sales rep was also not happy when I asked that out loud in front of other customers at CanJam. How did they not think-tank this ahead of time? The plastic slider on the Aeon's is simple, effective, and durable...no need to mess with what works.

I too tried this at SolCal CanJam last year. It was paired to a Hugo 2 TT and an M Scaler and to me it sounded pretty damn amazing. They had the right amount of bass and accuracy that had me listening to my own tunes for a good 15-20 minutes. What I should've done though was bring along my HE6 SE v2 and see how they compare. Like the DCA Stealth, the HE6 is stupidly power hungry and there are people who seriously use speaker amps to power them. At 83 dB of sensitivity, my HE6s would require more power than the Stealth which sits at 86 dB. But I don't need or use a speaker amp. I use a Schiit Magnius+Modius combination and sitting at 1 o' clock on high gain is more than enough to power them, but go to 4 and further and they come alive(6W at 32 ohms on balanced btw). I suspect it'd be the same with the DCA Stealth, just at a slightly lower level of power.
I'm actually in the market for my very first flagship, but there are just too many good options to go for that I cannot ignore (Susvara, LCD-5/4Z, Euphoria, Empyrean Elite, Diana TC, and more)
I would try an Arya before you leap to $4k headphones, it's good enough to be endgame for most.
Neither of these are as comfortable as Aeon 2's which I would recommend overall, but I also own the Klipsch HP3 and Focal Radiance which are both phenomenal and easy to drive. Headband hurts a little over time with HP3, and Focal has a little too much clamp, but I do have a big head
They just aren't that great. They are definitely good. The Stellias destroy this is every way, other than them being made by Focal. LCD 5 is better, ZMF VC and Atrium are significantly better, Susvara also better. I've owned them all and the only ones I still have are Susvara and the VC's.

On the smsl vmv A1 the headphone out is off the speaker terminals.
What I've noticed from the DCA planars is that they need high power Amps in order to properly drive them. Even if they have enough power to get enough volume out of them, they distort like hell or sound lackluster unless you have a lot of power overhead to drive them.
I run my DCA ÆON X CLOSED off an XD05 BAL and they sound fucking insane at pretty low volumes, my 400se sound like dog ass until I get upwards of 7 on high gain with boost then they get wonderful
Can you explain why? Why does unused power make an headphone sound better?

I actually enjoy the MG as an endgame. Even more than Utopia. It’s equal to it.
After months long, thought out learning about a Empyrean (brightened up with silver cable, but still slightly fuzzy & not fast enough) & Utopia replacement (2nd pair with driver failure), I decided MG being I enjoy the Utopia so much (& ears not as hot with more air with their dynamic driver open design).
They are as amazing as Zeos said. Almost as revealing as Utopia with proper bass I wished Utopia had.
I am concerned, after I burn them in, that the MG may not handle my required listening level (I get to enjoy music & work, safely. So there’s ambient noise). But, they’re already better volume handling than Utopia before clipping. But only about 50 hours burnt in. Better handling than new, today.
Was going to save for Susvara, 1266 TC, or try Stealth (ear heat was a concern, but enjoyment was priority).
@@G-entleManAndScholar that's exactly how i feel about the clear ogs i have, they're slightly less resolving than utopias but i prefer the clear sound signature, even compared to everything else i've tried. the only headphones that i tend to consider after a demo session are the hd800s, they just sound magical for live recordings

Yeah. The OG Clears sounded just right.
OG Clear Pro were SLIGHTLy more sterile, but just as balanced.
The MG’s are darker & more bassy (why I chose to get silver dragon & put Utopia pads on them).
& Utopia had that hotness that sounds weird, to me, tho, SLIGHTLy more revealing.
I wanted a tad more bass oomph, so, gambled on MG. & figuring silver cable would brighten MG & maybe make them as or close to Utopia.
I was right.
Almost went with HD800s, but said lack of bass made me, at the very end of choice, choose MG, last weekend.

You think a Jotunheim would handle this okay? It doesn't have speaker amp power, but it is rated at 6 watts per channel at 32 ohms. That's a pretty good amount. It is also a warmer sounding amp.
(Also, the DCA stealth is one of my favorite designs and looks so far. Definitely doing work for that four thousand dollars.)
It can but it won't be pleasant. Just because something measures well doesn't mean it can work with everything.
With that awesomely compact form factor it's a shame Stealth is so picky about sources. If you could drive them well from a DAP their ultra-portability would be far more compelling, but at 86-87dB sensitivity they're really begging to be tethered to a high-powered desktop chain. Meanwhile, LIRIC is uber-versatile, super fun, and half the price (and great out of a DAP).

Elastic spring systems are such a shame. I love my AKG K7XXs even though I have much better headphones but the headband has no elasticity to it anymore. It used to just float on my head and now the cups kinda just flop on the side of my head.
This was the very first thing I asked about at Can Jam to the sales rep and while he did offer to replace them if they ever stretched out, the look of dread on his face when I asked this was quite apparent. Like how did they not think about degradable elastic on a pair of $4,000 headphones that better last multiple people's lifetimes?

You didn't comment on the Nior amp requirements but they are similar. I tested a balanced k7 against my single ended Asgard 3. Was night and day. The Asgard just has the voltage. I bet a Jot or other high voltage amp would also work.

You have hum (120 Hz) on your channel, either an earth loop or one power supply regulation is bad. Now hum yesterday. Easiest thing is look what you have changed in your audio transmission path. Very noticeable on the subwoofer.
It's the basement heater system behind him... it hums quite loudly when it's on.

What headphones do you plug into it? The fiio K5 Pro is very capable. Dacs only really begin to matter when you get into 500$ detail monsters of iem’s or get into 1000$+ headphones. With those iem’s amp clarity is key, with headphones you’re mostly looking at neutrality and power requirements. If you have anything like the hifiman sundara and that price range you’re good with the k5 pro, has a very nice dac and an absolutely capable amp.
And if you want to have the best you can get for everything in one, fiio k9 pro. I got one and probably never in a lifetime will I need anything else. “Want” might be something else, but that would just be looking for a different ‘flavor’ because in performance it won’t get much better.

Stealth were definitely good on my idsd micro signature, but not worth $4k to me. Maybe my measly 4 watts just wasn't cutting it
It is really not that hard to drive. An JDS Atom could get it to over 120db its just Zeos has hearing damage because he listens to loud for too long.

TOOL chocolate chip trip is the track for eval headphones. It sounds different on so many things. There’s sound circulating around your head plus crisp drums at the end.
I tried them at the last two CanJams. In the DCA booth, they were underwhelming. When we got to the ampsandsound booth and tried it on the Nautilus, which has plenty of power, it was much better. While for me, while they have great technical performance, they're just boring. For people that like a reference sound, you may like them. If you want fun, look elsewhere.
"If you want fun, look elsewhere"........hmm......I wonder what are the characteristics that makes a headphone fun? after all these headphones closely match harman curve, which means most people will like the sound, have great sound stage and are comfortable, so what they are missing to be fun?.......or it is just your particular taste... if that the case....not helpful
I'm not the original poster of this comment but I might be able to help explain - I had a very similar experience with the original Aeon flow closed by the same company. It played all the right sounds and had great detail retrieval, but lacked any sort of physical presence in the mids and lows. When you listen to music live and something like a bass or cello is playing loudly you don't just hear it, you also feel it. In headphones this is sometimes called macrodynamics, and it's the feeling of the headphone being able to rumble on your head and provide a physical/punchy feeling when the music is slammin'. So it's not that the the Aeon can't play the right sounds at the right volumes, it's just that it felt lifeless and boring while doing so. My Audeze LCD-XC in comparison aren't bass heavy by any means, but they make me enjoy the music much more because they have that punchiness that you would feel in real life when the song calls for it. A Harmon line will tell you nothing of the physical experience of a headphone.

The perfect audience then for companies to release whatever BS they want and have be believed. Its the reason why most people in the world are NOT interested in sound reproduction because they cant be bothered to deal with people bragging and boasting about how superior there gear is just because it cost more money but in reality a lot of stuff sounds worse then lets say the Airpods. @@Jordonater That's incorrect. On the 2021 revision they're actually light on the mid-bass and Amir (since you mentioned him) recommends giving them an EQ boost from 20-125hz and not changing anything from 125-200hz. It still rumbles better on my head than most of the rest of my collection though :P
@@ClearAlera Im not sure if i wrote my point correctly but i know the Arya stealth is light on midbass thats why i said my HD58X has more punch because its bass above 80hz is higher in level than the Arya so it has more punch not subass rumble. I meant to say the Arya had no punch not rumble what a fool i am.
I got the Rode NTH100 because of you and HOLY MONKEYS is it good. What a terrific headphone. Put that NDH20 away those are crap compared to NTH100! Bigger number too! haha How much in dollars better are these? I cant imagine it getting 3850 better! Sick cans though, if I wasn't so poor id consider a pair just on the build alone. Sounds like a winner, the 10k suck out on graphs concern me slightly but maybe its ok in person.

@@shockwave2291 So the tonality is excellent and has low distortion? That’s a bad thing? The only thing it doesn’t do the best in is soundstage, the HD800S is still the king there, and that all has to do with the cup size & angle, but the tonality of the HD800S isn’t as good.
just get a sp200 or heresy or something for 100$? 3 watts into 32 ohms so like 2 into 23 ohms at least? all amps sound the same and its just about power, right?

So extremely hard to drive..I see... I wonder..... which would be more precise to determine that, a human ear or precise electronic measurement? the stealth needs 549 mV for 94 dBSPL, kind of high but below many others, including Hifiman HE-6, Abbyss Diana V2, and including my dan Clark Aeon RT (677), which my Topping A90 has absolutely no problem to drive, With that numbers is more likely most modern headphone amps will not have an issue with the stealth, Now if someone does a blind test with the stealth showing they can tell the difference between a normal headphone amp and extremely powerful one, then that would be relevant, anything but that has a very low reference value.
There is zero reason to pick these over the Meze Liric for travel headphones. Why Dan Clark would design a headphone that screams probability and yet requires so much power no portable amp can drive it is beyond me. One of the selling point features on Dan Clark's website is that it's travel friendly.
Even tho I love my aeons I don't trust this guy anymore. This stuff will be at half the price after two years

Judging by the "open box" link, that guy must have returned it.
I listened to couple sets of these at Canjam. I didn't care for them. They are well built and look cool and have a lot of resolution and all that. But as with most of the other new flagships, they sound so thin. It's like listening to a paper cut. The best setup I heard for them was the GSX Mini and very warm, Border Patrol tube DAC. But for my $7k(?) into that setup, I would still be very disappointed. For that money you could have the Fidelis and RAD-0 package. I like those units radically better than the Stealth. But I'm an LCD-4 man, so I'm biased to that signature. On the other hand, if you really like the Hifi Man Edition X or whatever and want to spend eight times more on a closed version, then the Stealth is your headphone.
And oh, yeah, I liked the LCD-5 best of the thin sounding flagships. Not trading in my 4 though!
Interesting take, I have often wondered if the newer flagships can touch the previous generation. As the hype has died down, I see more people talking about preferring last gen flagships like the Lcd-4 and the Utopia. Will be interesting to see where people's opinions are in a year or two, or by next gen.
I went to CanJam Socal specifically for these right as they were debuting and fully ready to drop $4k and happily left with the Aeon2 Noire for $900 instead. I still have zero buyer's remorse on the Aeon 2 Noire and feel like they are going to last a lifetime unlike the elastic bands in the Stealths.
@@kevinchrist1658 Probably a good choice, I haven't seen a single review of those cans that was negative really. I got the Aeon 2s (non noires) as well, closed back, sadly they have issues, but decent enough.

Completely agree with the DCA Stealth needing a powerful amp to shine. No comment on trying them on the FIIO M17 for example? I mean, were you pressed for time and had to return them to the owner? Spending ~35 minutes out of a 46 minute review talking about sponsors, merch, patreon, weeb music, and anything else but the headphones is kinda lame.

Zeos, the headband is made material is made of Nitinol, not steel. It's quite unique for headphones. I do wish other manufacturers would give it a try.
Also, all of your yellow cables are hideous and the Periapt cables are some of the worst you can buy. They're horribly microphonic(way, way worse than any stock cable I've had) and the giant disgusting cork splitter is excessive and always getting in the way. I don't know why you and others promote their cables when they're truly bad.
You can request non-microphonic cables from Periapt, and they will leave the outer fabric mesh off the cable so that hey are silent...it's almost entirely the mesh outer wrappings that cause this. They aren't the best cables aesthetically, but I'd much rather spend $80 on a nice cables that work and are durable rather than $300 on a cable that's ultimately only 10-20% nicer. I do think that the non-microphonic should be the default option though...most people aren't aware of this or the option to leave it off.
