    Yes, please make that flat rate video, or mechanic billing in general. Feel free to make it a multi part one to get all the info out. Seriously, love the running commentary on what you are doing and why.

    • @legohead6
      @legohead6 2 месяца назад +1

      Billing to the customer is typically done either by book time or straight time.
      Book time is a published time allowance for any given task, there are 2(maybe 3?) large and widely accepted companies that publish these times and can be accessed through a subscription service. For A to B work (Ie replacing a part) most shops will take the book time and charge their hourly rate on that.
      Straight time is exactly how it sounds. The shop takes the number of hours that were actually spent, and charges their hourly rate on that. This is commonly done during diagnostic, custom work, or things that do not have a published book time.
      How the mechanic that actually worked on the vehicle is paid is what AROD was talking about.
      Flat rate means the mechanic knows before he even starts the job that he is making $X to complete it. It doesn't matter if it takes him 5 minutes or 5 days. Usually X is determined by the book time and the mechanics "hourly" rate.
      Hourly is exactly as it sounds. You make $x an hour that you are working. If you work for 8 hours you get 8X pay for the day. Both methods have their pros and cons. Many love the flat rate work because they can typically get jobs done much quicker then the book time and therefore are making much more per hour of work then their "wage". On the other hand if they run into problems like seized/stripped/broken bolts, or make a mistake and have to go back and redo the work they are not being compensated for that extra time. Flat rate workers also usually get the short stick on diagnostic or troubleshooting work.

    I too worked for a Ford dealership but it was off-road construction equipment. We did not work flat rate but I understand the mentality of a dealership. It is horrible. I now work for a city agency working on 6.7’s I have one 6.0 and fire trucks, I love this job now. It is so much more relaxed. You are right there’s a lot more to life than going to work.

    Here there is no laws about giving old parts back to customers. As an independent I keep the parts on hand until the vehicle is picked up. Unless its something odd or noteworthy I usually don't bring it up, but if the customer asks ill happily show them the parts and they can take them if there are no core charges.
    I've never had a customer wish to take an old worn out/failed part home with them. The only time I get customers that want parts back is if I'm installing aftermarket or upgrade parts and they wish to keep the perfectly fine stock part as a spare. They will typically tell me ahead of time that they wish to keep all the stock parts.

    Parts visualization is definitely important. I do believe, or as you said, the option to see. Proof is in da Puddin. As they say. But integrity is why customers drive hundreds of miles to have you lay hands on their vehicle, which is a testament to how people believe in You Brother. I would drive by Dave's in Utah coming from Arizona to have you work on my 6 liter dually.

That looks like a nice well taken care of roll-back wrecker he got there! Although, I don't know that it has quite enough lighty-lights on it right now though! Flat rate is like the trucking industry.Cut throat and dishonest .
    The complexity of the work ,the honor of operational integrity was a goal lost on the mediocre ones that rubbed managerial types the wrong way…
    Get rid of the service departments and get techs that can deal with customers directly.

    Flat rate is big pressure to do the job fast but not necessarily best
    And it's worse if you are too fast the service manager will try to shave the time for the job. Then you walk away
    6 hour job on a rusty pos always takes more time and I would demand extra time and doesn't account for waiting for parts or decisions from customers and then long waits tie up your bay tic toc tic toc🤬🤬🤬

    Be interesting to see your flat-rate info. Seems to me it came about in part because of unethical or poor mechanics padding the times. But as I understand it the times are theoretical in that the engineers that make these times up do the job in kaizen type circumstances where everything is laid out in perfect sequence to do it.. Which does not replicate the real world in a garage, let alone something like a rusted/broken bolt ect. Unfortunately, good/ethical/efficient techs like you are in extremely short supply, and that flat-rate is pretty harmful and should be made for more real-world circumstances.
