In this video, I spend 24 hours with the real life Peter Pan and the Lost Boys. The Garden is an off-grid intentional community in Tennessee focused on egalitarian values, sustainable living, permaculture, and Earth stewardship. The Garden has created their own little version of Neverland, where those who live a nomadic lifestyle without money can come to land.
A few years ago, the Garden was at the center of a controversy that began on TikTok. Residents from the Garden were posting about their off-grid sustainable community and inviting anyone and everyone to come and see it, even posting their address publicly with an open-door policy. But after gaining lots of tractions and going viral with their posts, they were viciously attacked and labeled a “dangerous cult” with Tree himself accused of being the cult leader.
But I’ve gotten to know Tree and his partner Julia over the past few years, and I think that TikTok may have got it all wrong. So I am going to the Garden to spend time with real life Peter Pan & the Lost Boys to experience this community for myself.

I love about thirty minutes away from Macon county TN and have ran into several people who are apart of their community. Always been friendly to me
It’s really awesome that you took the time to go there and hear them out after all the negative heat they were getting. I sensed the TikTok haters were full of beans & was sad to see the individuals living in the Garden getting harassed. Glad we get a glimpse through your unbiased eyes, Sky!

My observation of the negative tik tokers is that they themselves are unhappy deep down, and they are envious of the clean healthy lifestyle and joy of The Garden community.
I use to live in a commune in south Carolina. It was fun. But it came with some challenges..living communaly is great but sometimes personalities clash. So you have to learn to love and forgive. None of us had any money so we had to dumpster dive very often. I'd like to visit the garden one day.
If I'm not mistaken, one is not supposed to have any money to live when living in a commune. I think you're supposed to make your own food, like these people are. It's a lot of work, too. Thank you for sharing.
I love the feeling when you step back from everything and connect with nature! Not sure how long I could do this for, but it seems incredible!
Is there no organisations in America like Foodsharing? In Germany you dont need to dive into dumpster anymore to save food! Shops give there leftovers to foodsharing people (many shops not all). Thank you sky for these inspiring Videos ;* Hug, Lea

Contractually, mega corps have to dispose all produce not sold. Unless they are a licensed charity organization; even with the license all food distributed HAS TO BE SHELF SAFE and located in an area that has 12% or less with homeless persons reported. Fun Fact, if you Dumpster Dive you will get a $20 ticket and a citation from your local authorities.
that's a very valid question. Unfortunately, out here in America, you could sue anyone for anything, and that includes suing organizations who give out food, If they don't distribute food correctly. They could easily get sued for giving out food that's expiring soon. They have to be very careful on how they give out food.

I wanna live in a commune, even if it was one like this where people come and go and I just help maintain it. Keep the plants growing for food and keeping it clean and everything. Meeting so many new people and helping those who need a place to go for a while sounds so amazing.
Also I do many crafts, I’d love to be making bracelets and necklaces and trade the things I make for more beads and learn to make my own and stuff. Same with painting, trading my art for more paint and canvases/wood pieces.

This was a really cool episode. People living with each other the way humans evolved to live together. Here on my street, everyone just lives in their house, doing their thing, not interacting with each other.

Sky's body language during the conversation while planting the onions was saying she had push back or uncomfortable questions with the overall ideology and structure of the community. Her holding back shows she is really wanting to listen and learn rather than waiting her turn to talk. IMHO there is an allure to this but there are so many holes to be poked for sustainability and scaling to larger populations. Great video either way
I don't necessarily agree with everything and the way they structure the community, but my intention is always to be open and curious and listen to a different perspective than my own. Thanks for seeing that!

we're working on community/private land trusts as the model movement towards village. A real necessary part of the equation is vested interest to build long term equity. We're not talking about money but more long term relationships so that elders and families can thrive. Look at Lopez Island CLT in Wa as one example. Tree is on point, if he's ready to go to the next level he can otherwise, when the core group is gone, how will the place carry on? Also, a lot of people are nomads which is great but how will they really achieve a sense of true security that comes from having a home?

That statement about forgotten about people 'there's not many place where you can go to without many and have a place to sleep and eat...... that doesn't involve drugs'. That hurts. I wish there were more place like this where people could simply take care of each other together and not be taken in by addiction.
I think spaces like this are so important and absolutely change people's lives who may have come from really tough situations.

Thank you for sharing your story of this commune, Sky. I hate to admit, I was buying into a lot of the bullcr*p that was being said about the garden in other videos. But then found out shortly afterwards, that it really wasn't how it was made out to be. I'm really thinking of taking an overnight trip down there to see what it's really like.

This is how I thought I’d raise my children. I did not. However, I have taught them life outside of society’s “norms”. When the last one graduates from hs, I need to find my way back to this. 💜

What I appreciate about your interviews is that you're able to bring out the 'real' person in these eccentric characters. The facades are fun, but I enjoy getting to see the real person behind the mask (so to speak). Excellent work, look forward to more as always!

we should all petition global supermarkets to begin offering old food for free in a section of their stores so no food goes to waste and ends up in landfills. instead of throwing it in the garbage, offer it in a certain area, or establish connections with food delivery services to deliver to people who sign up for the service. the customers pay only for the delivery costs, but for as much free food as possible
Here in the Netherlands most supermarkets have massive discount close to best before dates. When still not sold, donated to food banks
There was a guy at the garden I followed for a long time he went by the name MC trees and then his RUclips channel just went blank no videos is he still around the garden I was really intrigued and amazed about him

Can you believe the fruit and veg I found in the dumpsters in Germany was way fresher than the produce they sell here in South Africa in the supermarkets , also way overpriced! Crazy. Doesn't make sense.

A beautiful Life
Cults are a special interest of mine and when everything was happening a few years ago, I did see some early warning signs of what could become a cult, but they have since fixed that
I think that TikTok massively misunderstood the Garden and it was labeled without really understanding their community. The major red flags of true cults are 1. Spiritual guru/leader who everyone follows 2. Set of dogmatic spiritual beliefs 3. Control, control, control. The Garden has none of this, they’re just a group of misfits living on land together trying to live sustainability.
@Sky Life yeah definitely, they had the idea that communal living means cult, even though that's not true at all, and it can be a great thing like the garden is now. In reality, it's all about control. There were some things not explained before that are now, like their relationship with finances, that were warning signs. Now, anyone who actually studies cults knows and can point out that this ain't it
