selling weaned 400-600 lb calves in november vs. april big market difference, higher cost of gain but the greengrass market in the spring for the grass-bound stocker calves gets hot and makes up the difference. only makes sense if marketing them through the sale barns though for calves that will end up in feedlots eventually, but for you guys retaining ownership for grass fed, seedstock etc. probably wouldn't make much sense

In a recent road trip as the cattle and calves walked by Greg, it appeared as though the older calves had legs not that much shorter that than mature cows. Then one would go by that had legs as long or longer than the mature cows. Pretty obvious! It would seem that there is a ratio of leg length to height at tailhead of the mature cows that the 6 month calves should mimic. I don't think the skeleton and frame of the calf grows uniformly. If cattle are culled for behavioral matters and leg length too early, you may sell off calves in the margin of this ratio, that in fact, will grow into the proper proportion cow because the leg doesn't grow as continuously as the other parts of the frame. As a result, you can save some of these culls and increase the size of your herd faster. Am I completely out to lunch here?
