- There are awesome interviews and then there are these next level of crazy awesome interviews! :) Without the need to brag about this episode, I think this one falls in the latter category! Because this one tells the story of the amazing inspiring engineer and pilot Mike Patey! See full description...
Where do I start to describe Mike Patey? There's just so much to tell about him, like you'll see in this episode. But to give it a go: he's probably best-known for the speed record braking Pratt & Whitney PT6 powered Lancair Legacy rocket for an airplane called 'Turbulence', the heavily modified and insane popular Wilga called 'Draco' and scratch-built Carbon Cub like bush plane called 'Scrappy'!
I had the privilege to have a chat with Mike via a Zoom call, to talk about his history, background, love for engineering and aviation and (of course) some of his incredible airplanes! Oh, and about a couple of inside scoops, but don't tell anyone else... ;)
On the off-chance you didn't check out his video yet, here are some links to his social media channels. Check them out, like, subscribe and follow him wherever and whenever you can!

Ever since I received my pilot license, I shared my passion for aviation with a lot (and I mean a lot!) of passengers! Because I enjoy sharing my aviation passion so much, I would like to share it with the rest of the world too! But since taking on 7 billion people as my passenger isn't really practical, sharing my passion via RUclips is... ;)
Where a lot of aviation channels on RUclips focus on General Aviation at the west side of the Atlantic, my channel focuses on Light Sport Aviation in Europe, primarily Holland and Germany. Light Sport Aircraft are also known as 'Microlight Aircraft' or 'Ultralight Aircraft'.
The reason I make these videos is to exchange aviation stories and learn and improve by sharing. And because I love to share!
Excellent interview with my favorite flying cowboy 🤠!
Thanks for helping me out, Chandra! 🤙🏻 I worked almost 4 complete days on this edit and from start to finish (and still have) a smile on my face! What a great guy! 👍🏻
Chandra SlyFox Patey your the other half of the great Mike P. Your support for his work keeps his great videos coming.
You have a telescope named after you😲
Ding--hao !!
Thank you for putting this episode together. Mike is such a driven man, where does he get his energy from.
From the love of everything he makes... Yes, he is an exceptional man! 💪🏻
@@ForFunFlyer I rewatched it again today, I missed the bit about the scrappy suspension. Can't wait for that video from Mike.
Me too, that'll be something else?! 😋 And did you see the scoop about his new race plane? He wants to beat his own record of 438 miles per hour! 😳🤪
@@ForFunFlyer Yes, he is certainly a driven man. I miss working on aircraft. I have to make do with my smaller machines.
As long as you have fun doing that, right?
Mike is a force of nature! I can't even imagine having that much energy.
I know, me too... 😉 Thanks for watching! 👍🏻
Elon has that same spark and focus just toned down a few degrees. Introvert/extrovert
Mike is just such a bloody amazing guy. The technical expertise and insight and the attitude and humility. A true role model.
He is, totally agree! 👍🏻
Mike Patey is the nicest guy in the whole world. He spent a lot of time with you. Great interview!
Yes, he is! Thanks! 👍🏻
A True AMERICAN Patriot! Great interview!
Thanks! 👍🏻
Jolmer , Well done Mike is a Legend! Great interview, Looking forward to more of your content, Plus some more Scrappy video from Mike.
Thanks! Mike is publishing new Scrappy videos real soon! Next up: the front suspension! 👍🏻
I have been a lover, follower, addict to aviation since my childhood, and I thought that I was one of a kind in this spatial ball called earth, until I watched Mike Patey in his videos...WOW!!!!!! What a fantastic person, family man, aviation enthusiast and pioneer in many ways, with his designs, building practices, and incredible love of aviation. Thanks FunFlyer for this great interview, and respectful manner toward Mike so he could talk and discuss what his life has been like. He, and his brother Mark, are indeed the modern Wright brothers of our time, with their love and respect for what they love the most. God bless you always and keep you bringing joy and love to your families, and lots of enjoyment for us that follow your astounding exploits. God speed. May you and your families come out of these trying times with complete health, well being, and joy. Thanks for this wonderful interview.
You're very welcome, thanks! 😀
Brilliant video - Thankyou for taking the time to put it together. Amazing inside into mike patey and his brilliant aircraft!
You're welcome, thanks for watching! 👍🏻
I am so impressed and in awe of Mike and Mark
Yes, me too! 👍🏻 Who isn't, right? 😉
Nice work and what a privilege to have 30-min of Mike's time. I've been following him for years along with some of the other flying cowboys (Trent Palmer, Cory, etc), but as an Aeronautical Engineer by degree (ERAU) and self taught EE, I drop everything I am doing to catch Mike's latest videos. Bravo to you for the scoops you got from Mike. Count myself as your newest subscriber.
Welcome to the channel, thanks! 👍🏻 I hope to get a hold of Trent Palmer, to do an interview with him too. But so far, I can't get thru to him on social media. But who knows, somewhere in the future? 😉
@@ForFunFlyer Perhaps he'll peruse these comments and get the message.
Let's hope so! 😀
Great interview. Mike is an inspiration on so many levels. I enjoy and relate to his passion for daily life, creating, building and enjoying the things we build.
Thanks! 👍🏻 Yeah, he's an inspiration to a lot of people! 💪🏻
Always interesting and entertaining Mike Patey! His enthusiasm for aviation is second to none. MIKE........ BACK TO WORK!!
Yeah, just love it! 👍🏻
Great interview, too many people have lost the ability to build or repair machines, Mike is an inspiration to us all.
Thanks! And totally agree!
What an incredible and inspiring man.
Yes, totally agree! 👍🏻
I've been following Mike Patey for some time now and find him to have an interesting intellect. I'm thrilled that you've found him too.
Yes, I followed all the Draco build vlogs too, always excited to see what challenges he faced and how he overcame those. He is a very resourceful guy for sure, just love all his videos! 👍🏻
Nice interview, Mike is responsible for my falling into addiction (flying) after a 24 yr break (marriage & kids)..... Outstanding Aviator, inspirational, truly inspirational guy!
Yes, I agree on all mentioned things! 👌🏻
Fantastic Jolmer, great episode. Well done
Thanks! 👍🏻
Thanks for the interview with Mike. He is such a genius. I subscribed to yours also. Loved the video.

@@ForFunFlyer Virtually a self taught engineer is amazing. This guy is pure class
@@markhooper5824 I totally agree! A big inspiration to a lot of folks! 👌🏻
Loved the video, I for one can say his depth of details of his engineering was not boring at all.
Thanks! 👍🏻 Totally agree on that! 😉
@@ForFunFlyer I keep hoping he covers more of the engineering process. Especially hoping so on his planned race plane.
I think he will. He already said in the latest Scrappy video, he'll do something on stress analysis on the next one. But man, I'm looking forward to that race plane! Beating his own 438 mph record?! 🚀😀
Oh believe me I saw that and am looking forward to seeing the FEA he does. I'm just hoping he does more afterwards. 😀

OUTSTANDING EPISODE!!!! I have been a fan of Mike's since Draco project began and was fortunate enough to meet him at EAA Oshkosh 2x. Just got word today that EAA 2020 has been Cancelled, very sad as we live only 90 miles away and go every year. I have clicked Subscribe for your channel too.
Thanks for watching and subscribing! 👍🏻 Yeah, I saw the news about Oshkosh too... 😕 Another great event cancelled. I'm not an impatient person, but am quite done with COVID, ugh... 😔 Hopefully the world reboots soon, as soon it's safe!

Great to see two on my go to channels come together. :-) I have followed his channel for a long time now, as an ex design engineer and being born into aviation, his channel just hits all the right notes for me.

Ah, thanks! 👍🏻 Yes, aviation is pretty cool, right?! 😉
A remarkable self made man - great interview. Many thanks for sharing

Mike inspires me. Such a positive creative person.
Yes, me too! 😀
Awesome interview - you're very down to earth and genuine. Mike thinks you're a great guy and I just started subscribing to you. Keen to go thro your content. You asked pertinent questions, great listener, did your research, didn't show off about how much you know or ask annoying questions and it you were respectful of the interviewees time...and you were laser focused with your notes on hand. Well, thanks! 😀 Very motivating feedback! 👌🏻
Mike and Mark are amazing men with there drive and work ethics. Thanks for sharing his story. G W
My pleasure, thanks! 👍🏻
Wow this is a great interview...helped me understand so much background info that helped me understand better Mike's other videos and build projects. First time visitor here..love your channel!

Interesting life story - Mr Draco, positive attitude to life, what a great interview
Thanks! 👌🏻
Awesome interview!
Thanks! 😎
It's about time Boeing handed Mike a 737 max8 to play with!
Now that would be something else, right?! 😀👍🏻
@@ForFunFlyer It may well get the problem solved, AND be fun for Mike!
I bet he'd solve all issues for sure!
Yah and Mike would fashion 32" Bush tires to it!
That sounds like something Mike would jump into but I'm not sure that the flying public is ready for a 737 Max8 on Alaskan Bush Tires!!
Great interview!
Thanks! 👍🏻
Woot! Looking forward to the new plane. Also hope to see Draco - x up and running.. loved that Mike put in strut tanks. On Scrappy Mike did an amazing suspension for the front. My question to Mike is if you need the full suspension how will the tail soak up impact and not bounce?
Don't know if Mike is reading along on the comments. If so, he'll probably answer... 😉
Just check out his bouncing the tail suspension video.
Mike Patey - a true legend

Mooi stukje! Bijzonder aardige man en extreem veel kennis. Gaaf!
Ja, klopt! Een voorbeeld voor velen!
ForFunFlyer Absoluut! Ik heb hem mogen ontmoeten met Draco vorig jaar op Oshkosh, helaas zal dat dit jaar niet gebeuren. Leuk kanaal heb je. We zullen elkaar vast eens spreken in de lucht!!
@@djurispijker3519 Ah, gaaf! Ja, het duurt vast weer eventjes voordat er een dik gepimpte Wilga klaar is? Roger that! 😎 Dank voor je support! 👍🏻
Draco crashed because of adverse Yaw if you want my opinion, if you have an aileron dragging on one wing and pressure on one wheel the plane is going to pivot on that wheel. the longer the wing the more leverage drag force will have, it is the type of effect that upsets piper cubs in cross wind situations if you try to keep the wings level while the plane is going slow on the ground, the best way to keep the wings level is to take of into the wind and you know Draco could take off in the width of the runway! so that is never going to be a problem.
I find that strong cross winds and high aspect ratio high wing trainers usually ends up in a ground loop followed by a kart wheel where every corner of the plane gets damaged.
Mike Patey is a superhuman... yeah.... its true.. best regards from Sweden.. keep up your awesome work..
Thanks! 👍🏻
Awesome! Thanks :-)
You're welcome! 👍🏻
Great interview, Mike is a gifted man, so talented, I also love following his videos. By the way I'm an aeronautical engineer and understand when he explain the carbon fiber manufacturing process, aluminum parts design and machining, aircraft stability and aerodynamics. What he does in the hangar is a dram job. My only concern is that I hope he using the adequate protection equipment when working with such hazardous materials all the time. Long life to Mike.
Thanks! 👍🏻 Ah, so you're an aeronautical engineer? Must be an awesome job? I think Mike uses protection gear, since he's doing that work for quite some time now?
@@ForFunFlyer It is an awesome job, thank you, but nothing like modifying, designing and manufacturing parts for your own plane. Yes, I have seen Mike is using face masks with filters and gloves when grinding composites. But I have also seen him with regular medical face masks which are not optimum. That is what I meant when I said "All the time" I have also seen him removing the mask right after mechanically sanding carbon fiber parts, which |I have to say is dangerous as the powder is still in the air. I have had training on hazardous material in some of the companies I have worked for. I can just wish all the best to Mike and his family.
Ah, I see. Perhaps he's reading along and will follow up on your advice?
If you like technical stuff, check out these videos of mine; ruclips.net/p/PL2hZJ46SgHWTWus_OVQmlE5AhCiLiOY1G

Nice, a dutchy interviewing one of the greats. Chears to Mike. Btw are you anywhere near zestienhoven?
Zestienhoven is called Rotterdam Airport nowadays, which is situated in the south west of the Netherlands. I'm way up north, which is only a 3 hour drive 😉
You should release the Drako RC model. Great design deserves to live on, and gives others an opportunity to enjoy it as well.
Yeah, wouldn't that be great?! 😀
Just Googled it now; perhaps you can modify this model, to look like Draco? 😉 www.bigplanes.nl/contents/en-uk/p1720_ECOM-RC-Wilga-PZL-104-model-airplane.html
Or this one? www.motionrc.com/products/black-horse-pzl-104-wilga-2240mm-arf
Mike should be President. He definitely knows how to get shit done.
Yes, he does! 💪🏻
Thanks ForFunFliyer for the interview.
You're welcome! 👍🏻
you! Interview of a fascinating subject!!!
Thanks! Totally agree!
Mike, you need to do a die cast model for sale of Draco and all your other planes.... seriously!!
Yes, would that be nice! 😀 Just 3D scan them and make molds from that? 👍🏻
Mike Patey: "Learning to weld when I was eight years old."
I could tie my shoes when I was eight years old.
I'll give myself a little credit; I had a hunting license when I was 13. I was a very reliable kid.
As the twig is bent the tree is inclined, right? 😀
@@ForFunFlyer Yes, indeed. I try to learn something new everyday. I'm 81 but still haven't learned to weld (but I can solder).

GOOG LUCK ON SCRAPPY!!
He's making something special of her, right?! 😀
Back to work!

awesome man🤟🤟
Thanks!
You'd have to tie this guy down to an immovable object to slow his insane rate of productivity. Even still, he'd probably find a way to untie himself, go straight to the computer to design a more capable style restraint and then make it from carbon fiber.
LOL, he's a beast!
Haha, exactly! 💪🏻 He would improve everything he comes across with, haha! 🤣
Wow! 👌🏽
👍🏻
heel goed
Dank je!
Mike build a space plane next
Wouldn't that be something?! 😀💪🏻
ForFunFlyer yes I think he could be a contender in that arena
Something tells me Mike and the Wright brothers self taught genius fabricator/engineer/mechanic Charlie Taylor would get along real well.
Charlie Taylor had no more than a sixth grade education but he hand built the Wrights engine.
Check him out and what he built and what Mike accomplishes with today's tech will seem cool but can't hold a candle to what Charlie accomplished with a hammer and a hand drill and a file.
I think real talent can't be taught? (Self-) education is important, but it helps a lot if someone is pre-programmed, so to say? 😉
So great to see Mike Patey on your channel I have binged watched everyone of his videos. he is an amazing talented Aviation engineer.
Totally agree!
I don't have many hero's I look up to but Mike Patey is in there with the other couple...most inspirational man?....he's No.1!
Yeah, he is one of the most inspiring persons I know! 💪🏻
How can he possibly think describing the engineering that goes into his planes is boring! I could listen for hours to the smallest details

@@chrisjamison376 Yeah, me too... 😕
But on a positive note everyone was okay and hes going to build it even better eventually. He already has a new Wilga to start with
@@FrozenLionsFan I agree, the wellbeing of the PAX is most important. And yes, Draco will live again, but Scrappy first, right? 😉 Which plane he's building on at the moment doesn't matter much to me, I like to watch all his videos! There's always something to learn! 💪🏻

The faster Scrappy is done, the better it is, right? Can't wait to see her completed! 😀
@@ForFunFlyer at the time the first Scrappy episode came out, Mike did more work in that 20min video than i had done all year. The man is an inspiration, i cried when i saw the wreckage of Draco, half from seeing he and his wife were ok half from seeing the loss of such a fine piece of art.
