I've built... I don't kkow... 50 engines or so in my life (I was a full time mechanic for 20+ years) and all I EVER used for build lube was Valvoline 30 W mixed with STP... and I never had a single problem with any of em. Of course I'm old... and build lube was just a hope in those days.
Great job team. We have been doing BB Mopar engines since '72. Please check the end play on your crankshaft with a dial indicator. #3 Main bearing is the thrust bearing, which is where material is sanded off top/bottom bearing halves/sides to meet specification for end play, which is .004--.007.
Guys running a business and trying to film stuff is beyond hard. I appreciate everything you two do. Working together is the key never take anything for granted you guys do fantastic work..
Really cool video..gnarly speed shop! I look forward to Tuesday's for whatever you guys post. I really liked Liv's history lesson on Magu rock with the old pics. The California " mystic" just comes to life in your videos! Liv is such a sweetie, when she was welding the charger door and blew a small hole and said- I am so Sorry- to Danny. I used to TIG weld stainless fittings together for 30 yrs. Some of the best welding laid down were by the female welders! I am retired finally at 66 y.o. I watch Nicks garage and he had an engine that the rear main seal was changed out like a dozen times. I liked watching Danny do such a great job on yours..fingers crossed it wont leak. Look Forward to all your future videos and Thank You for all your hard work!
I've always been a fan of the 68 and 69 chargers...So many of the cool classics went to the crusher not knowing how valuable and collectible they would one day be...Cheers to you two for rescuing this one and bringing it back to life Danny and Olivia!
Can't wait to hear this engine come to life! 11:41 "lift with your back, not your legs" 😂 good one Danny. I've never lifted a crank shaft and by the looks of it, I don't really ever want to, lol. 18:33 Danny you reminded me of Bob Ross when you were talking through the silicone dab on the seals and block 😂. Looking great guys, thanks for sharing! 🍻
I’m just putting my 2 cents I would have installed all the main caps on torque to specs then install oil cap your not doing anything wrong but I think that’s what I would have done keep up the great work
Yup, this thing will HOWL at the moon! My brother has a built 427 in a Nova, with exhaust cut-outs, and it's WILD to listen to. He sent me video of his buddy's LT-4 (650 HP 6.2 LS, supercharged) and while it sounds good and pushes about 100 hp more than the 427, it's just REALLY hard to compete with the sound of a big block with a big cam! Being a Charger fan, I'm excited to see what this build is going to end up as.
Great video, that Charger should be a screamer, you two make a perfect couple, and Liv when you look as good as you do , you don't have to be strong. Love you all ❤❤❤
When you put those rods and pistons together .... weigh all your rods and pistons, make sure they all weigh the same. break out that file. Next time torque all the mains at the same time. Great build.... bigger table helps so you can lay out all your parts. Keeping clean is a big deal.
Great stuff, great engine, great channel. You might want to use some plastigage to double check the bearing clearances, just to make sure they are correct. 99% of the time they are correct, but that other 1% can bite you in the butt occasionally.
I’ve used sodium hydrochloride at the fish markets I’ve found it works better if you mix a bit of detergent with it the old cars still are popular we don’t have many here being a lot smaller population the mustang coupes are great they turn heads here when they go past I enjoy your show thanks for sharing
Do yourself a favor and get your Mopar headers from TTI they make the best fitting headers for mopars. Also when you paint the block clean it with some lacquer thinner or acetone and then use Motorcoater hemi orange with a brush, it flows out and looks awesome, very durable.
For the record, it's required to sound like Bob Ross whilst applying the rtv sealant. It just lays down so much better...😉. Just giving some shit Danny. (Yes, I do the same). Can't wait to hear this beast sing guys!! Btw, I tipped over one of my 440 cranks, and it smashed my big toe last summer. It still locks up and hurts! That bitch is heavy!
Can being a little tight on the new the assembly lube takes up most of the clearance between the camshaft and the bearings creating a slightly tight feeling
Next time to make your build go easier after you check your crank and thrust clearances remove the studs so your not focusing on not hicking the crank when your putting it in. You can also just RTV on the upper seal retaining area and install the crank and seal then re-install the studs and main caps, torque in proper order and then install the lower seal retainer as you did (vert nicely BTW) I would suggest less RTV between the upper and lower halves of the retainer the seal needs a certain amount of crush to prevent a leak. Hope this helps
So l have to say. Building engines getting everything back from machine shop putting the cam in crank barings pistons . Yeah all we did was pour 30 wight oil over it & turned it until it was well lubed👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻😎
8 speed Chevy overdrive automatic transmission would be better than a stick you'll get tired of that clutch after a while and it can't shift as fast as a automatic from a crashed Camaro LT 1. They are simply a badass transmission for that Mopar.8:90et.
Just wondering you forgot to mention if you were looking for roller lifters or flat tappet OG lifters. Isky makes the best of everything.. And you didn't mention the cam spec's - is it going to be advanced 3 degrees for tork. Because it's a torque monster. Not a LS 7k rpm screemer.. .
At 25 min you Should have Installed all the Main Caps and Torque to Spec Evenly From the Center Out Now you have put un due Stress on the Rear of the Crank It will Still Be Ok if you install the Other caps Just Run them Down with a Speed Handle ot turn that Impact Down Then Loosen the rear and Retorque From Center Out
Go with the Comp Cam Roller Lifters and you'll never go back.. There's Zero "Break In" with the Harland Sharps/Comp Roller Lifters and you can drive it like you stole right out of the gate.
Next is to take it back apart and fix those cam bearings or at least check the cam journals. That's to tight IMO! But oh well, hopefully it will wear itself in with no issues.
OK.... and then I caught the engine rebuilder who takes the engine to a machine shop and adds a liner to a cylinder, changes the heads so that they'll accept roller rockers, sleeves the lifter holes because in these engines too much oil is passed through the lifter assemblies and it starves the rods... so he resized the holes and sleeves them... and then reassembles the whole thing using technology that wasn't even invented when I did engines! I mean using valve spring keepers that're made to change the height of the installed springs? Never heard of it but it makes real good sense. You might pick up something out this one too. It's here: ruclips.net/video/tOcZyE4tBHY/видео.html BTW this is a FGord 351 that came out of a Pantera that has been in a barn for 30 years or so... and that's what it's going back into too.
@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism No I mean people starting on a bare block build on a engine stand. . I’ve replaced cams in frame when I’ve had no choice.
I don't know if you both have ever been behind the wheel with that much hp and torque and your foot into it. If you have, then good deal, if you haven't, take the time to get with professionals, two things about having a high-end hp and torque, that I found out in the middle of a four way intersection in Carmichael ca. the fricken whole back of my 66 GTO, spun one hundred eighty degrees faster than you could say QUICK, and oh sh##!!!! I got lucky, I didn't hit anything, the second one, that I will tell you about is, at one time there was a speed shop in Vallejo ca, Bailey speed shop, and a dude with more money than brains wanted Bailey brothers to build a 600 hp engine for his son who just got his fricken drivers license, Baileys was against the idea, however, the father paid for the entire bill, God only knows how much that cost, well, a week or two went by and on a tow truck was the 67 camaro resembling a horse shoe, ROOKIE DRIVER floored it all the way going on to the freeway and with the steering wheel turned to the left the car went to the right and slammed into the cement barrier. The father wanted Baileys brothers to restore the car to mint condition. Their response was, "NO!!!!! be careful.
After watching this show... and you 2 starting to build this engine... I watched Haggerty doin an engine rebuild in a shop and you have got to catch them rebuilding this engine! Their work is fantastic, their camera work is also first class.... part of this is just me havin fun with ya cause they've got money to burn and I'm pretty sure you're just not there... yet... but anotherr part is from someone who's done it to someone who's doin it... it's just a really, really interesting watch and I honestly hope you'll just sit back and enjoy the watch. A little cultural appropriation there, I see.

I stand the block on its back, on the floor, and lower the camshaft into the block. Less chance of nicking a bearing.

cam first incase the cam bearings need additional clearances.

seal cap goes on last
Match lifters with cam. Call cam manufacturer, see what they recommend.
Do you guys always get along so well?
Believe it or not, yes! Haha what you see is how it goes around here
Should of put all the main caps on. Just sayin'. Continue on good people.
To tight
id say a wee bit tight on that cam.
U better stop weein on their cam! 😂
👍🇨🇦
hi can anyone guide me on how to find old auto parts dealers in USA online, any website with all info or directory
Timing set
You don't predict any issues by torquing the cranks end down first, rather than working your way out from the center, though?
It might have been better to instal crank 1st then the seals but.. here's to hoping it be fine booger! 😅👍
Cam in first, right on! I see people lay crank then put in cam, what a joke. Love your channel.
What a joke? You mean people doing cam swaps without complete engine tear downs are jokers?
@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism No I mean people starting on a bare block build on a engine stand. . I’ve replaced cams in frame when I’ve had no choice.
@@danielromero-zf4jl Yeah, but point being, what difference does it make? The engine isn't going to know or care, which one you installed first.
@@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialismyep, but what about the cam being tight. Is it too tight? Or is it the thick lube causing that? 🤔
650 hp is a heavy load on a 2 bolt main block . i guess that is why Big Block Mopar's need to be line bored all the time

Checked clearances off camera
Too tight on cam, IMO it should turn freely with just the installation bolts
