- Join me in this step-by-step tutorial where I'll take you through the process of creating a custom woodcut print for T-shirts. From carving the block to the final print, I'll cover all the steps you need to make your own wearable art. Plus, I'll share a story about the unexpected turn this project took.
Start: 00:00
Design: 00:40
First, I'll show you how I designed the print on my computer. It's a design that printmakers will instantly recognize - it's all about the ingredients for making a copper etching.
Carving: 00:50
Carving is up next, and I'll introduce you to the tools I use, including my Japanese woodblock carving tools and Dockyard micro-tools for those tiny details. If you're on the hunt for quality carving tools, I'll point you to a supplier that I trust.
Prep: 01:27
Once the block is carved, I'll show you how I prepare it for printing, I'll also share my choice of Speedball fabric ink, which has proven to last on shirts I printed years ago.
Platen: 02:02
You'll see my DIY setup for block printing on shirts, which helps me align everything perfectly.
Print: 02:27
After getting the shirt positioned and the block inked, I'll demonstrate how to get the right pressure and run it through the press.
A Problem: 3:20
Lastly, I'll tell you about the unfortunate fate of the shirts from this project and why they spent eight months on a shelf. You'll hear about the lessons I learned and how the ink outlasted unexpected challenges.
I'd love to hear your thoughts, so please drop a comment below, and if you found this video helpful, consider subscribing to support the channel. I appreciate it!
Check out the video and let me know if you think I should give these shirts another shot. The block is ready, and so am I!

The faded look seems like a feature to me, not a bug.
Now I’m thinking I should make another run of them!
Wow. That is a wild result! Definitely could be an opportunity for some artistic experiments
For sure! Maybe this will lead to a new thing altogether. I’ve been a bit apprehensive to start another fabric project. Thanks for checking out the project!
Print some floral decorations on the fading lines and make them a unique design feature!
Great ideas! Pivoting from my ‘vision’ of a project to something new when it goes sideways is something I’m working on!
Honestly, I want to buy a faded block printed shirt... but I don't see them on your shop?
Aw bummer, I sold the few that turned out how I intended and when I moved studios I donated the remaining faded ones. It was a rough time, and didn’t have the creativity at the time to do anything with them! I’m going to be doing a new run of them in the future if you’re interested feel free to sign up for my email list to be notified ✌️
Im curious about what do u use to protect the MDF prior to the carving part. Im used to use some shillac variation to get clean sharp lines.
Thanks for sharing! What kind of wood did you use for carving and how do you usually buy it?
Thanks for checking out the video! For this project it’s just 1/2” MDF, which I got from Lowe’s. It’s not the most fun to carve and makes your tools dull quickly. I typically use Shina Plywood which cuts very smoothly and holds good detail, and I get it from iMcclains.com
Might want to replace those bulbs. I bet they are uv bulbs or tanning bed bulbs
I’ve since moved out of this studio thankfully!
Just sell the faded t-shirts (discounted). Just make it clear and everything will be fine, dry aged Shirts 😄
What kind of a press is that?
Thanks for checking out the video, it’s an 18”x36” Takach Etching press.
Bob Ross was right, there are only happy little accidents. Do something awesome with the faded part. Or at worst, buy a couple boxes of Rit and call it good.
Really old fluorescent bulbs can emit more UV than you think. Betcha that's what happened.
I was really surprised by it! Great ideas though!
Just add a happy little tree 😂
